III. Teaching Procedures Step 1: Further Study & Lead-in Introduce China Charity Day Show the logo and background of China Charity Day: Q: What do you think people can do on China Charity Day? (donate money, hand out leaflets, volunteer for charities) Lead-in Show Millie's model report about Mandeep (Page 103) and ask: Q1: What is the structure of this report? Q2: How does the report describe Mandeep's life change? Step 2: Model Analysis Analyze the Writing Structure Guide students to sort out the 5-part structure of the charity report from the model: Part 1 (Intro): Introduce the person Part 2 (Past): Describe the past difficulty Part 3 (Help): How the charity helped him/her Part 4 (Present): The present change Part 5 (Future): The person's future wish Useful Expressions used to do sth, could not read or write, learn about the conditions, thanks to, be grateful to, want to become, hope to help others Step 3: Writing Workshop Pre-writing: Planning Ask students to choose a person (real or imaginary) who got help from a charity, and fill in the planning table first: Part Content Points Intro Name, age, place, family background Past Difficulties (e.g., can't go to school, no clean water, suffer from illness) Help Which charity? What help did he/she get? Present Life changes (e.g., go to school, live a better life) Future Future wish (e.g., want to be a volunteer, a doctor) Writing Requirements (1) Follow the 5-part structure of the charity report. (2) Use at least 6 useful expressions in this lesson. (3) Word count: 80-100 words; logical and sincere tone. Give students 10 mins to write the first draft of the report. Step 4: Peer Review & Polish Peer Review Checklist: (1) Does the report have 5 parts (intro, past, help, present, future)? (2) Are there at least 6 useful expressions and 2 passive voice sentences? (3) Is the life change of the person clear? Self-polish Ask students to revise their drafts according to the peer review suggestions. Step 5: Sample Essay & Analysis Sample Essay A Girl's Life Changed by the Red Cross Society of China Li Na is a 10-year-old girl from a small village in Yunnan. Her family is very poor, and she used to work on the farm all day. She could not go to school and had no chance to learn to read or write. One day, workers from the Red Cross Society of China came to her village. She was given a free schoolbag and books by the charity, and she was offered a chance to go to the village school. Now Li Na goes to school every day. She can read and write well, and she loves her school life. She is grateful to the Red Cross Society of China for changing her life. She wants to become a teacher in the future and hope to help other poor children. Just as China Charity Day calls on us, everyone should give a helping hand to people in need.
