There are over 800 boarding schools in the UK with students from home and foreign countries. Boarding schools started hundreds of years ago in the country. The earliest boarding schools were set up for white, rich boys only.
In the UK, boarding schools have three terms in a school year, with about 13 weeks in each term. Students study and live together. They can’t go outside if they are not allowed to. Each student has his or her subject plan. Most boarding schools have a “lights out” time. So when it’s time to go to bed, all the lights in the bedrooms are turned off. The housemasters can take care of students all the time, especially after school hours.
Nearly all the students at boarding schools wear a school uniform. Boys usually wear a shirt and a tie, and girls wear a white blouse, sometimes also a tie and a skirt. As students get older, the rules become less strict.
In the UK, boarding schools provide students with delicious food. They can choose to have a full English breakfast or simple bread. They can also choose either a meal with no meat or another meal with meat for lunch and dinner. Students can also make themselves something to eat at any time in a kitchen.
16. What should students in the boarding schools do according to Paragraph 2?
A. Make a subject plan. B. Study and live alone. C. Look after themselves.
17. What can we learn about the school uniform?

B. Girls only wear a white blouse.
C. Girls sometimes wear a tie and a skirt.

But now they live in a big, comfortable apartment (公寓) near the city centre. They often go out to eat on weekends. They sometimes go shopping for fashionable clothes and like to travel during holidays.
Linda from Australia: I used to think “Made in China” was of bad quality but now these three words represent (代表) the products with low prices and good quality. Since the popularity (流行) of online shopping, many foreigners feel like finding a door to another world, because the products they bought surprised them. In need of some rest? You can now climb down 419 metres to have the deepest sleep below ground. The hotel called Deep Sleep, under the mountains of Snowdonia in Wales, is the world’s deepest hotel. Guests must journey down through a slate mine (板岩矿) to reach the hotel.
The hotel has four twin-bed cabins (小木屋) and a romantic grotto (洞穴) with a double bed. A night stay for two in a cabin costs 375 pounds while the price for two in the grotto is 575 pounds. And if you stay here alone, you will have to pay the price of two too.
You can only book the hotel for a Saturday night through to Sunday morning and getting to your room is far from relaxing. You will have to complete a 45-minute walk into the mountains and at the end you’ll get a helmet (头盔), a light, a harness (安全带) and boots before going into the world’s largest and deepest slate mine.
The trip down into the mine includes miner stairways, old bridges and a scramble (攀爬). It takes about 60 minutes, and once you complete the trip, you’ll arrive at a set of large steel doors. Welcome to Deep Sleep!
Then, try and relax for the evening with a free meal to enjoy at the picnic table. After that just head off to bed.
It’s also important to note it’s not exactly warm down there. It’s about 10℃, so it will feel the same as if you were camping outside.
All guests must get up before 8 am for a hot drink and breakfast before starting the trip back up to ground level. And going up is always harder than coming down. Whatever, it sounds special.

Good learning habits make me a good English learner
As we all know, good habits are very important in our daily life, especially to us students. As for me, I have some good habits in English learning.
Firstly, I often read English aloud in the morning to practice pronunciation. Secondly, I like listening to English songs in my spare time. In this way, my listening improves a lot. However, I also have something that I need to improve. For example, I’m afraid of making mistakes when I speak English in class. Besides that, when I meet new words, I hardly ever look them up in a dictionary. So I have difficulty in understanding English novels or magazines.
From now on, I will develop more good habits in English learning. I hope I will get better grades and make greater progress in the future.
