Passage 1
On October sixteenth, we will celebrate World Food Day. It’s a time to think about growing food. The key to growing good food in China is its different kinds of soil (土壤). The soil helps us grow lots of grains and plants. Let’s talk about three of them.
First, black soil helps Heilongjiang grow lots of grains. One out of every nine bowls of rice in China comes from here. The grains are popular among Chinese families because they taste good. Second, green soil is great for growing rice too. You can mostly find green soil in southern China. Scientists plan to use this green soil more for rice farming. Third, you can see red soil in places like Jiangxi, Hunan and Yunnan. This soil is rich in iron (铁). Tea trees, oranges and bamboo can grow well in red soil because of the iron.
World Food Day is for us to know more and do more. We should be thankful for this amazing soil and also save food every day.

In the film Forrest Gump《阿甘正传》, there’s a famous saying: “Life is like a box of chocolate. You never know what you’re going to get.” It’s the same with blind boxes.
The history of blind boxes can be back to lucky bags sold in Japan from the late 1860s. In recent years, it becomes quite popular with young people in China. During the Double 11 Shopping Day, Pop Mart, a leading blind box company in China, once sold 55,000 Labubu dolls on Tmall in just 9 seconds. Last year, it took over 200,000 Chinese more than 20,000 yuan to buy blind boxes.
One reason for their popularity is the cute appearance (外观) of the toys (玩具) inside the boxes. They can be placed anywhere in your home. But the most interesting thing about blind boxes is the feeling between what you expect and what you get. The excitement of getting the right toy is like winning a prize.
While the boxes are certainly enjoyable to some, others worry that children might pay too much money for these toys. “The blind box business makes full use of gambling psychology (赌博心理),” said an expert. “Young people, especially those aged 18 to 35, usually look for the excitement brought by higher risks, which leads to impulse buying (冲动消费).”

DeepSeek, a Chinese AI, helps with homework. Take a photo of math problems, and it can solve them step by step. It also helps with English by making stories with new words or developing exercise questions. DeepSeek is good at hard tasks, but sometimes it makes mistakes, so students need to check their answers.
Doubao is another helpful AI. It’s like an English friend. You can speak English to it, and it will fix your mistakes and show the correct (正确的) words on screen as you talk. For example, if you say, “I go to the park yesterday,” Doubao will say, “It should be ‘went’ ! ”
Both AI tools are popular in China and other countries, showing Chinese tech is making a big difference everywhere. However, some people are worried. Some students use AI to write short articles, but teachers advise, “Use it to learn, not to copy answers.” What’s more, using AI too much might stop students from thinking by themselves.

Where did you go last summer holiday? Did you go anywhere fantastic? If not, why not take a trip to Altay next summer?
Altay, located (位于) in Northwest China’s Xinjiang, is known as the Snow Capital of China. Last year, a popular TV show called To the Wonder, based on (根据) Chinese writer Li Juan’s book My Altay, helped more people know about the place.
The amazing landscapes and relaxing ways of life in the TV show quickly made Altay a hot place for tourists. “It feels like a place out of the world,” said Mrs. Zhang, a 32-year-old woman from Beijing. “I would be very happy if I saw such beautiful landscapes every morning after getting up. My husband and I are thinking about taking a trip to Xinjiang, and we will certainly visit Altay.”
Thanks to the TV show, more and more tourists are choosing to take a trip to Altay. According to an online travel platform (平台) in China, searches for Altay trips rose by more than five times in just 10 days, and air ticket bookings (机票预订) to Altay grew by more than 50%.
The tourist season in Altay used to last from July to August. Because of the TV show, however, it starts in June now.
Altay has breath-taking landscapes. However, not many people went to visit it before, partly because it is quite far away and it takes a lot of time to travel there. Although it is still difficult for Altay to serve large numbers of tourists, it is trying hard to improve people’s travel experiences. It seems that Altay’s tourism has a bright future.

The design (设计) of Siheyuan houses is very special. It shows us family life with ancient ideas. Usually, the main house is on the north side and faces south. We buy things on the Internet and then the packages will get to our apartments in a short time. It is said that there are about 100,000,000 packages on the way every day in China and there will be many more in the future. But there will not be enough people to send packages. So, we need robots to take over the work.
Now, along the streets in Beijing, you can see many yellow and black delivery robots. They look like a square box. People call them “little yellow horses”. They can help people buy things like drinks, fruit and vegetables from stores and then take them to their places. A “little yellow horse” has four cameras. The cameras are the eyes of the robot and they can guide the robot.
So, how can we use the robots? In fact, it’s very simple. You only need to choose what you want to buy and give your address. Next, you need to pay for the goods. All these are finished through your phone. Then the workers of the stores will put the goods in the robots, and they will quickly take the goods to your places. Today, many students use AI tools to study. These helpers make learning easier and more fun, especially for middle schoolers. Here are two tools that are especially welcome.
Teachers and parents advise using these tools wisely-not as easy ways, but as helpers. Ask “How can I solve this?” instead of asking for answers. 在下面短文中,李华描述了自己最喜欢的节日——元宵节。请阅读下面的短文并根据短文内容填写表格,掌握短文的结构和写作思路。
My favourite festival is the Lantern Festival. It is one of the traditional Chinese festivals. It falls on the 15th of the first month of the lunar calendar.
Families always get together and have a big meal during the Lantern Festival. The traditional food of this festival is sweet dumplings with different tastes. In northern China, they are called yuanxiao while in the southern part they’re named tangyuan. Watching the red lanterns is one of the main traditions. Lanterns of different shapes and sizes are usually put on trees, or along riverbanks on show. Another tradition is guessing lantern riddles. The riddles are usually short, wise and sometimes funny. The answer to a riddle can be anything: a person’s name, a place name or other things.
This festival has a history of over 2,000 years. In old times, the Lantern Festival was also romantic. It’s the best time for young people to meet each other. A line from Xin Qiji during the Song Dynasty shows this:
Hundreds and thousands of times I searched for her in the crowd. Suddenly I turned, and there she stood, in the dim light.
Society is developing and culture keeps changing, but the Lantern Festival remains unchanged.

Confucius was a great thinker and teacher in ancient China. He was born in Qufu, capital of the state of Lu. He acted as an official (官员) there. But he was perhaps a better thinker than he was an official, and he ended up having to leave the state of Lu. He spent 13 years travelling around the other states, spreading his ideas. In his last few years, he returned to Qufu where he spent the rest of his life teaching. His teachings were recorded by his followers in a book called Lunyu.
Confucius’ teachings formed the base (基础) of Chinese thought. Confucius thought everyone should develop virtues (美德) and always do the right thing. Confucius’ thought is considered to have been the necessity of Eastern thought.
To help people understand how to behave towards others, he taught five virtues accepted by all Chinese. They are ren (kindness, charity), yi (fairness), li (ceremony, tradition), zhi (knowledge), and xin (trust). Another virtue is xiao. Xiao is the duties a person has to their parents. It means loving, respecting, obeying (服从), and taking care of one’s parents in their old age. Xiao forms the base of a peaceful society. And he is the final goal according to his thought.
