Business Blossoms
As she spoke, Zhang Yue put her hands behind her back to hide that they were shaking. She couldn’t, however, hide the line of sweat running down her forehead, which was caused partly by the heat of the television studio, but more by fear of the four people seated in front of her. They stared back, their blank faces giving no clue as to what they would say next.Feeling dizzy, Zhang Yue took a deep breath as she struggled to finish her presentation, “And that is why I need your help in turning my new and exciting business into a successful one.”
①
②
Now chairwoman of her own company, Zhang Yue is fond of saying, “The early bird catches the worm.”The place where this happens is a valley, a world away from any television studio.Moving carefully through the darkness, she passes row upon row of rose plants. In an hour, these fields will be full of people, working quickly to pick the flowers before sunrise.“It has to be done then,”says Zhang.“These flowers are delicate.”
Zhang never thought that this was something she would end up doing.Surrounded by roses as she was growing up, she paid them little attention. It was only after graduating from university overseas and returning to visit her parents that Zhang realised the potential. “Conditions are ideal here,” she says.“This is a place where roses grow wild.”
Zhang therefore decided to return to her home town and grow roses, which surprised many people.“I wanted to experience the freedom of being my own boss,” she said.“But I also wanted to give something back to my home town.As people say, ‘It takes a village to raise a child.’”
She is not the only young person to have been bitten by the start⁃up bug.All over the world, an increasing number of enterprising young people are thinking of starting their own businesses, as the growing economy creates more opportunities.Like Zhang, they present their ideas in the hope of getting investment and advice, and they have the same passion and devotion. The majority meet with rejection.A few, like Zhang Yue, find themselves lucky enough to get investment and the all⁃important input and support from more experienced business people. The road to their success is however still a long and difficult one, with many challenges along the way.
As someone who grew up in the country, Zhang already knew about growing plants. However, like any entrepreneur (企业家) who was just starting out, she still had a lot to learn. She has overcome a number of obstacles in nursing her business to the success it is today.“The biggest challenge at the initial phase was to persuade people to work for me, which was totally outside my experience.Few in the village believed I could create a multi⁃million yuan business from flowers,”says Zhang.“After I went on TV, a major Asian
manufacturer of cosmetics was willing to purchase my product and help with its distribution. It was only then that the locals began to believe me.Now my product is one of the best in Asia. This year, I can pay all my fellow workers a decent bonus.”
Seeing her peers who also dream of success and independence,Zhang has mixed feelings.Though she welcomes the new entrepreneurial spirit, she advises that people be realistic and seek guidance from expert consultants before rushing into things.
③
“I love running my own business, but it’s not for everyone,” says Zhang.“To succeed in business, you need more than a good idea, hard work and determination. What really matters is a sound business plan, access to capital, and good management and negotiating skills. Most of all, don’t be too ambitious. You should know your own limits and those of the people you work with. For young people who have little life experience, that can be a challenge.”

A
We were standing at the top of a tower. I saw twisting streets leading to the square. “See, my dear,” Father said gently. “There is more than one way to the square.”
Father’s words always guided me. Dreaming of becoming a fashion designer, I came to Paris, but had no luck. Then one day I met a friend wearing a beautiful sweater. “What an interesting stitch!” I cried.“It was done by Mrs. Vidian,” my friend explained.“She learned the stitch in Armenia, her native country.” Suddenly I had a daring idea. Why not design, make and sell my own clothes?
I drew a butterfly pattern and asked Mrs. Vidian to knit it into a sweater. It proved a success. A New York store wanted 40 sweaters to be ready in two weeks. I accepted the order. My happiness disappeared, however, when Mrs. Vidian told me it took her almost a week to knit one sweater.
I was crushed. Then I remembered Father’s words. There must be other Armenian women in Paris who mastered the special stitch. Then I searched for any Armenians living in Paris. At last I tracked down several. Two weeks later, the first shipment was on its way to the United States!
From that day on orders poured in. Then came another test. As I was busy getting ready to show my winter fashions, the sewing girls quit their jobs. Where was the way out this time? I wondered and worried. Then it dawned on me.
I worked hurriedly. And right on time, my show took place. Some coats had no sleeves; some were only patterns made of heavy cotton cloth, but on these I attached material to show what colors and textures the clothes would have when they were finished. What a show! Once again Father’s words helped me.

2.What do the underlined words “the first shipment” refer to in paragraph 4?

Life can be so wonderful, full of adventure and joy.It can also be full of challenges, setbacks (挫折) and heartbreaks.Whatever our circumstances, we generally still have dreams, hopes and desires — that little something more we want for ourselves and our loved ones.Yet knowing we can have more can also create a problem, because when we go to change the way we do things, up come the old patterns and pitfalls (陷阱) that stopped us from seeking what we wanted in the first place.
This tension between what we feel we can have and what we’re seemingly able to have is the niggling (烦人的) suffering, the anxiety we feel. This is where we usually think it’s easier to just give up.But we’re never meant to let go of the part of us that knows we can have more. The intelligence behind that knowing is us — the real us.It’s the part that believes in life and its possibilities. If you drop that, you begin to feel a little “dead” inside because you’re dropping “you”.
So, if we have this capability but somehow life seems to keep us stuck, how do we break these patterns?
Decide on a new course and make one decision at a time. This is good advice for a new adventure or just getting through today’s challenges.
While, deep down, we know we can do it, our mind — or the minds of those close to us — usually says we can’t.That isn’t a reason to stop, and it’s just the mind, that little man or woman on your shoulder, trying to talk you out of something again. It has done it many times before. It’s all about starting simple and doing it now.
Decide and act before overthinking. When you do this you may feel a little, or large, release from the jail of your mind and you’ll be on your way.
5.It can be inferred from the first two paragraphs that we should .
A.slow down and live a simple life
B.be careful when we choose to change
C.stick to our dreams under any circumstances
D.be content with what we already have
√
根据第一段中的“Whatever our circumstances,we generally still have dreams, hopes and desires ...our loved ones.”和第二段中的“It’s the part that believes in life and its possibilities. If you drop that, you begin to feel a little‘dead’ inside because you’re dropping ‘you’.”
6.What is the key to breaking the old patterns?
A.To focus on every detail.
B.To decide and take immediate action.
C.To listen to those close to us.
D.To think twice before we act.
√
根据最后一段中的“Decide and act before overthinking.”可知,B项正确,D项错误;根据倒数第二段中的“ ...or the minds of those close to us ...That isn’t a reason to stop ...”
7.Which of the following best explains the underlined part in the last paragraph?
A.Escape from your punishment.
B.Realization of your dreams.
C.Freedom from your tension.
D.Reduction of your expectations.
√
8.What does the author intend to tell us?
A.It’s easier than we think to get what we want.
B.It’s important to learn to accept sufferings in life.
C.It’s impractical to change our way of thinking.
D.It’s harder than we expect to follow a new course.
√
故选A项。
On any given day, many of us wrestle with our fears. We might be considering changing a job, telling someone we love them or wanting to speak up for what’s right when we see injustice (不公正). 9 Or it says that we don’t have the ability to create the life or world we want to have. The cycle often plays out in the same way.
So, what should we do? 10 Instead, we can choose to accept fear as part of the process of change and practice courage.Though courage is often thought of as an inborn character, it’s actually a practice that can be learned for dealing with difficulty. 11 Here are two useful tips for dealing with fear and moving closer to courage.
Listen without attachment. Many of us who are stuck in fear have an inner critic (批评家), constantly telling us we’ll fail.Sometimes we adopt approaches to removing it. 12 However, if we can take time to listen to our inner critic without attachment — without the need to ignore or accept what it is saying — we’re in a better position to learn from it.
13 Creating courageous communities gives us the support to face challenges.Sometimes our stories get in our way, and we need people who are doing similar work to help us see where we’re getting stuck or what we’re truly good at.
A.Fear shows up in the body.
B.You’ll be more likely to make the changes.
C.In other words, courage can become a habit.
D.Don’t see fear as bad or try to remove it when it arises.
E.But a voice within us pipes up saying that there’s no point.
F.While we can get temporary relief, they don’t actually make the critic go away.
G.Surround yourself with like⁃minded people who also honor the values of courage.
9.选E 根据空后“Or it says that we don’t have the ability to create the life or world we want to have.”
10.选D 根据空后的“Instead, we can choose to accept fear as part of the process of change and practice courage.”
11.选C 根据空前“it’s actually a practice that can be learned for dealing with difficulty”可知,C项符合语境。
12.选F 根据空前“Sometimes we adopt approaches to removing it.”
空后的“courageous communities”即指G项中提到的“like⁃minded people who also honor the values of courage”,故选G。
