A carbon footprint is the measure of influence our activities have on the environment, in particular climate change. It is calculated by the amount of greenhouse gas we produce in our daily lives. Fortunately, nowadays it is much easier to make eco⁃friendly lifestyle choices than, let’s say, 20 years ago. But one question has been on my mind a lot lately: is it better to buy new eco⁃friendly products or used traditionally produced goods? After doing some research, I have decided that some things are better new and others are better used. Let me try to explain. A carbon footprint is made up of two parts, the primary footprint and the secondary footprint. The primary footprint is a measure of our direct emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the burning of fuels, including household energy consumption and transportation. The secondary footprint is a measure of the indirect CO2 emissions from the whole lifecycle of products we use — those related to their production and breakdown. Based on this understanding, we have a good deal of control and responsibility over our carbon footprint. Things like dishes, clothes and furniture fall into the “secondary footprint” group, so less is more and we can focus on finding used goods to avoid the added production. However, for the car and the other appliances that we need we can go with new, energy⁃saving models. I heard somewhere that electronics and appliances give off 90% of their carbon footprint after they leave the factory. So it seems most reasonable to go for the energy⁃saving models. The main concern here is the amount of energy that goes into the making of new products and whether or not that extra carbon is worth the footprint the product will make once it gets to you. 1.What do we know about the secondary carbon footprint? A.It is related to our consumption of fuels. B.It is made when we are buying the products. C.It is less harmful than the primary carbon footprint. D.It is counted as ours though not directly made by us. D。 2.Which of the following helps reduce our carbon footprint according to the author? A.Using second⁃hand textbooks. B.Using old and expensive cars. C.Buying new but cheap clothes. D.Buying new wooden furniture. 可知,像盘子、衣服和家具之类的东西属于“第二碳足迹”,这一类的东西越少越好,所以可以集中精力寻找二手货,避免加大生产,从而降低碳足迹,故排除C、D选项;再根据“However, for the car and the other appliances that we need we can go with new, energy⁃saving models.” A。 3.“The footprint” underlined in the last sentence refers to the CO2 produced in .  A.using the product B.recycling the product C.making the product D.transporting the product √ 解析:词义猜测题。根据文章最后一句“... and whether or not that extra carbon is worth the footprint the product will make once it gets to you.” A。 4.What is the text mainly about? A.What appliances to buy to save energy. B.What a carbon footprint means in our life. C.How to identify different carbon footprints. D.How to make eco⁃friendly lifestyle choices. D。 B For many, denim (牛仔布) is a type of cloth; but for London⁃based artist Ian Berry, it’s a creative medium. For the last two decades, Berry has used the navy blue cloth to create various portraits, and even photorealistic depictions of California. And his latest creation continues to reveal the unexpected and innovative ways denim can be used. Titled Secret Garden and recently on display at the Garden Museum in London, this work reimagines a peaceful setting with a fish pond, flowers, and plants — all made from recycled denim jeans. The Secret Garden show was first exhibited at the Children’s Museum of the Arts in New York in 2017 and has since been displayed in various site⁃specific locations and galleries worldwide. Originally designing it for a young audience, Berry aimed to inspire children to reflect on our interaction with nature. “The idea came from thinking many kids don’t have their own gardens and thinking of community gardens located between buildings and trying to inspire them to seek them out,” Berry says. “It also gave the opportunity to talk about sustainability as well as helping young minds think about where things come from.” The artist even showed the kids a cotton plant to explain where jeans come from. “It was amazing to see so many people confused by the idea,” he recalls. “It enabled educators to talk about how in the show plants were turned into pants, then back to plants again.” While the most recent Secret Garden show isn’t specifically designed for children, it still arouses a childlike sense of wonder. Visitors can walk through the denim garden path and find plants hanging above them. Various plants and flowers are depicted in shades of indigo (靛蓝色). There’s even a peaceful pond at the heart of the garden, featuring denim koi fish. Every area of the garden showcases such an impressive level of detail that it’s easy to forget that the entire show is handmade from denim. 5.What did Ian Berry use denim for? A.A kind of cloth for clothing. B.Covers for various portraits. C.Bags for flowers and plants. D.Materials for his works of art. 根据第一段“For the last two decades ... innovative ways denim can be used.” 6.What’s the aim of the Secret Garden show? A.To raise children’s awareness of nature. B.To get children in New York interested in art. C.To tell the great use of denim in daily life. D.To explain how to recycle denim jeans. 根据第二段“Originally designing it for a young audience, Berry aimed to inspire children to reflect on our interaction with nature.” 7.What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about? A.Children’s lack of nature knowledge. B.People’s confusion about Berry’s art. C.Motivation of Berry’s artistic creation. D.Process of plants across different periods. 8.What is the characteristic of the show described in the last paragraph? A.Costly. B.Complicated. C.Abstract. D.Lifelike. 根据最后一段“Every area of the garden showcases such an impressive level of detail that it’s easy to forget that the entire show is handmade from denim.” Many poor children in Africa struggle on tuition for an education. However, a new school has been asking their pupils to pay for classes with 9 .  Every week, students 10 the Akshar School are required to line up and “pay” for their classes using grocery bags 11 at least 25 pieces of plastic waste they 12 from around their homes and communities.  Parmita and Mazin, the couple 13 for the new school, were 14 to launch the campaign after witnessing their students being forced to 15 the acrid (刺激的) smell of burning plastic. That’s because before the school was opened in 2016, local families and communities 16 burned plastic waste as a 17 of keeping warm and fueling fires.  Now, the plastic is being collected and recycled at the school’s own recycling center. The school 18 the trash by compressing (压缩) about 40 pieces of garbage into a(n) 19 plastic bottle.  Furthermore, the school’s older students can work part⁃time at the center as an additional source of 20 .  Now the school 21 over 100 students between the ages of 4 and 15.Since the school’s 22 curriculum has attracted more and more 23 to enroll, the couple plan on opening another 100 schools over the next five years. 9.A.working hours B.farm products C.plastic waste D.burned trash √ 解析:根据下文“and ‘pay’ for their classes using grocery bags at least 25 pieces of plastic waste”可知,学生可以通过捡塑料废品(plastic waste)并将其上交的方式来支付学费。 11.A.taking in B.spreading out C.attached to D.filled with √ 解析:根据空后“at least 25 pieces of plastic waste”可知,袋子里装满(filled with)了塑料废品。 12.A.collected B.borrowed C.explored D.counted √ 解析:根据上下文语境可知,这些塑料废品是从家和社区周边收集(collected)来的。 13.A.anxious B.grateful C.responsible D.qualified √ 解析:根据语境可知,这所学校是由一对夫妇负责的(responsible)。 14.A.changed B.inspired C.prohibited D.recommended √ 解析:根据下文“after witnessing their students being forced to _______ the acrid (刺激的) smell of burning plastic”可知,这对夫妇在目睹了学生被迫闻烧焦塑料的刺鼻气味后受到启发(inspired),才发起了用塑料垃圾支付学费的活动。  15.A.stand B.enjoy C.observe D.control √ 解析:根据空后“the acrid (刺激的) smell of burning plastic”可知,孩子们要忍受(stand)焚烧塑料所带来的刺鼻气味。 16.A.consequently B.obviously C.eventually D.commonly √ 解析:根据下文“burned plastic waste as a of keeping warm and fueling fires”及语境可知,那是因为当地住户常常(commonly)通过焚烧塑料废品来取暖生火。  17.A.pity B.wish C.means D.luck √ 解析:根据句中“burned plastic waste as a of keeping warm and fueling fires”可知,当地住户取暖生火的方式之一是焚烧塑料。 18.A.buries B.removes C.throws D.recycles √ 解析:根据上文“Now, the plastic is being collected and recycled at the school’s own recycling center.” 19.A.single B.straight C.large D.twisted √ 解析:根据句中“The school the trash by compressing (压缩) about 40 pieces of garbage”可知,在被加工的塑料废品中,约每40份废品可以被压缩进一个塑料瓶。  20.A.income B.credits C.scores D.trash √ 解析:根据空前“Furthermore, the school’s older students can work part⁃time at the center”可知,高年级的学生可以在回收中心做兼职赚钱,将此作为额外收入(income)。 22.A.efficient B.creative C.skillful D.respected √ 解析:根据语境可知,此处指学校的创新(creative)课程。 23.A.teachers B.beggars C.partners D.students √ 解析:根据空前“Since the school’s curriculum has attracted more and more”可知,学校的创新课程吸引着越来越多的学生。 ①___________________________________ (为解决全球气候变化问题), we must take immediate action.
