Qingming Scroll
Zhang Zeduan’s Qingming Scroll is a masterwork of Chinese art. Painted on a five⁃metre⁃long silk scroll, it offers an important insight into life in China in the 12th century. It is commonly believed It is commonly believed that the city described in the painting is Bianjing, the capital of the Northern Song Dynasty. The ancient scroll is currently housed in the Palace Museum in Beijing.
①
The scroll consists of three main sections. The first section presents a peaceful scene of rural life near Bianjing, featuring crop fields, a river winding through the landscape, and farmers hard at work. The second section shows the riverbanks and the central bridge alive with activity as boats sail in and out of Bianjing.Civilians can also be seen walking through the city gate in both directions. The third and final section pictures life inside the city itself. Here, hundreds of people from all walks of life, including butchers, hairdressers and
government officials, can be seen going about their daily business. The combination of these three sections gives the viewer an idea of what life was like for the people of Bianjing.
Zhang’s amazing artistic techniques is apparent all across the scroll. Using ink on silk, he creates realistic images of scenery, buildings and people, and displays a remarkable mastery of perspective. The most impressive aspect of the painting, however, is probably Zhang’s precise brushwork.
This well-developed ability, as well as the scroll’s ambitious size, allows Zhang to show an enormous amount of detail.
Thanks to all this fine detail, the Qingming Scroll provides a comprehensive look at life during the Northern Song Dynasty. It reveals a great deal about the 12th⁃century Chinese customs, clothing, transportation methods, and business practices. At first sight, the overall scene of life in the capital city appears peaceful and cheerful. However, some critics suggest that on closer inspection,
②
the painting actually exposes serious political and social problems.
Some boats carrying food do not seem to belong to the government, which suggests that the government has lost control of food supplies and transportation. Also in the painting are soldiers who appear to ignore their duties. There are some less obvious indicators of trouble too. For example, in the centre of the scroll, a boat is in danger of crashing into the bridge. These sorts of details point to a crisis developing in the city. In fact, the Northern Song Dynasty was in decline by this stage. About twenty years after the painting was completed, it was overthrown.
③
Zhang’s timeless scroll is an important example of realism in the history of Chinese paintings. Its value is down not only to its great scale, artistic quality and attention to detail, but also to its representation of daily life. Such is its worth that several later emperors even asked the most talented artists of their day to make copies of the scroll. Some of these copies are now regarded as precious works of art in their own right. With the Qingming Scroll, Zhang made an outstanding contribution to Chinese art and greatly influenced generations of future artists.

Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
Born in the Netherlands in 1853, Van Gogh led a simple life in a small town until the age of 16. He then left school and joined a firm of art dealers in the large city of The Hague. He eventually realised that dealing with others’ artwork was not his profession. His true love was to become an artist himself.
He devoted much of his time to learning the fundamentals of drawing. Van Gogh believed that to become a great painter, one must first master the ability to draw. It was only after he was comfortable in this area that he began to use oil paints. That is when he developed a style and talent for colour that made him one of the most respected artists of all time.
Van Gogh’s paintings are amazing representations of his view of the world. The colours jump off the canvas, not only because of their brightness but also because of the brushstrokes (笔触). Van Gogh avoided light, feathery strokes, which would portray typical subjects. Instead, he used his brush and oils to make layers that built the painting until it was almost three⁃dimensional.
Perhaps one of the most memorable examples of Van Gogh’s use of colour and brush style is his painting The Starry Night. The sky swirls (打旋) across the canvas, while the stars shine with unearthly brightness. Each brushstroke creates the image of movement. The Starry Night shows Van Gogh’s great ability to create a powerful image with simple subjects.
Van Gogh spent only the last ten years of his life painting. He is believed to have sold only one of the 900 paintings he created during those years. Yet today Van Gogh is considered one of the greatest artists of all time. His influence is evident; many painters mimic his style and use of colour. His artwork can be found in museums all over the world and is valued at millions of dollars, an evidence for Vincent Van Gogh’s talent.

When I was a little girl, I liked drawing, freely and joyously making marks on the walls at home. In primary school, I learned to write using chalks. Writing seemed to be another form of drawing. I shaped individual letters into repeating lines, which were abstract forms, delightful but meaningless patterns.
In secondary school, art was my favourite subject. Since I loved it so much I thought I was good at it. For the art O⁃level exam I had to present an oil painting. I found it difficult, but still hoped to pass. I failed, with a low grade. I’d been over⁃confident. Now I’d been declared talentless.
But other channels of creativity stayed open: I went on writing poems and stories. Still, I went to exhibitions often. I continued my habitual drawing, which I now characterised as childish doodling (乱画). In my 30s, I made painter friends and learned new ways of looking at art. However, I couldn’t let myself have a go at actually doing it. Though these new friends were abstract painters using oil paints, or were printmakers or sculptors, I took oil painting as the taboo (禁忌) high form I wasn’t allowed to practice.
One night, in my early 40s, I dreamed that a big woman in red approached me, handed me a bag of paints, and told me to start painting. The dream felt so convincing that it shook me. It was a form of energy, giving me back something I’d lost. Accordingly, I started by experimenting with water colours. Finally, I bought some oil paints.
Although I have enjoyed breaking my decades⁃long taboo about working with oil paints, I have discovered I now prefer chalks and ink. I let my line drawings turn into cartoons I send to friends. It all feels free and easy. Un⁃anxious. This time around, I can accept my limitations but keep going.
Becoming a successful painter calls for being determined. I realised I was always afraid of wanting too much. That dream reminded me that those fears and desires could encourage me to take risks and make experiments.

Ⅱ.阅读七选五
Drawing is a great way to express yourself and share your creativity with others. 9 That’s because you need only simple supplies. Check out these tips to make your drawing skills better.
Gather supplies
One of the best parts about drawing is that you can get started right away with paper and pencils you already have. Drawing in a sketchbook (素描册) is also a great idea. 10 You can also experiment with other drawing materials, like colored pencils or markers.
Pick your subject
When thinking about what to draw, choose something you feel excited about. 11 Items around your home, like a bowl of fruit or a favorite toy, can also be great subjects. If you can’t find exactly what you’re looking for, seek inspiration online and print out what you’d like to draw.
Draw often
12 If something does attract you, try to work on it as often as you can. Put a small sketchbook in your backpack, so you can draw when you have free time, like when you’re waiting for an activity to start. You could even give yourself mini challenges. For example, you can draw the same object for a week and see how much you improve.
Seek out more resources
You can improve your drawing by practicing on your own, but you can also get better with help. Ask a librarian to help you search for step⁃by⁃step drawing books at your local or school library. Museums and art studios in your area may also offer drawing classes. 13
A.It is also an easy hobby to pursue.
B.It takes practice to get really good at drawing.
C.You won’t draw perfectly unless you’re patient enough.
D.Ask an art teacher at school to point you in the right direction.
E.It can help you easily look back at your work and see your progress.
F.When you start drawing, think of your subject in terms of simple shapes.
G.You could draw a beautiful tree or go to a local park and sketch the landscape.
语篇解读:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了绘画是一种表达自我、与他人分享创意的好方式,并给出了一些提高绘画技巧的建议。
