Every day, millions of people around the world rely on blood transfusions for surgeries, treatments for serious illnesses, and emergency care. Without voluntary blood donors, many patients would not survive. Who Can Donate? To donate blood, you must be in good health, at least 18 years old (or 16 with parental consent in some places), and weigh at least 50 kg (110 lbs). Before donating, your blood pressure, temperature, and hemoglobin levels will be checked to ensure your safety. The Donation Process The process is simple and safe. After registration and a health screening, you will be seated comfortably. A sterile needle is inserted into a vein in your arm, and about 450ml of blood is collected into a special bag. The actual donation takes only 1015 minutes. Afterward, you’ll be given snacks and water to help your body recover quickly. Blood Types There are four main blood types: A, B, AB, and O, each with a positive (+) or negative () Rh factor. Type Onegative (O) is known as the "universal donor" because it can be given to patients of any blood type, making it critical in emergencies. Type ABpositive (AB+) is the "universal recipient" and can receive blood from any donor. Why Donate? Besides the joy of helping others, regular blood donation can have health benefits.
