Passage 1
(24-25学年高一下·山东宁阳·期中)
Tom was in high school for half a year, yet he still didn’t adapt to the new school life. He was unwilling to communicate with others. In class, he often felt lonely among his classmates, always lost in his own thoughts. As a result, he became increasingly unhappy and his academic performance began to get worse.
Mr Smith, the headteacher, noticed his unhappiness. One Friday afternoon, the teacher approached him and said, “Tom, I’ve noticed that you’ve been a bit down lately. Is there anything wrong? Are you willing to share your feelings with me?” Hesitating for a moment, Tom sighed and said, “I just can’t fit in here. I miss my parents and old friends so much, and it seems that I have little in common with the classmates here.” They chatted for a long time that afternoon.
The next Monday, it was time for the class to change seats as usual and the headteacher asked Jack, an outgoing and helpful boy, to sit next to Tom. Jack said cheerfully, “I’d like to make friends with you.” Tom was amazed by Jack’s friendly offer, but soon felt a wave of warmth flowing through his heart. Jack immediately started a lively conversation, sharing his favorite hobbies and interesting experiences. Tom, who had been so lonely before, gradually found himself responding and opening up.

Passage 2
(24-25学年高一下·广东东莞·期中)
An A for Mrs. Bartlett
I was sitting next to Missy in my ninth-grade world history class when Mrs. Bartlett announced a new project. In groups, we were to create a poster around what we were studying.
On a piece of paper, we wrote the names of three friends we wanted in our group. After collecting all the requests, Mrs. Bartlett informed us that she would take into consideration the names we chose and would let us know the results the next day. I was a well-rounded top student in the class, so I had no doubt I would get the group of my choice. There were only a handful of sociably decent people in the class, and Missy was one of them. I knew we had chosen each other.
The next day, I anxiously awaited the class. After the bell rang, Missy and I stopped talking as Mrs. Bartlett called for our attention. She started to call out names. When she reached group three, Missy’s name was called. So I’m in group three, I thought. The second, third and fourth members of the group were called. My name was not included. There had to be some mistake!
Then I heard it. The last group: “ Mauro, Juliette, Rachel, Karina. ” I could feel the tears well in my eyes. How could I face being in that group — the boy who barely spoke English, the one girl who was always covered by skirts that went down to her ankles, and the other girl who was often wearing very strange and unusual clothes with fancy items. They certainly fell into the category of the least popular in our class. They were considered misfits (不合群的人)!
There must be something wrong! Mrs. Bartlett was such a person of insight, vision and thoughtfulness that she never forgot to bring out the potential of all her students. Oh, how badly I wanted to be with my friends. Finally I was determined to convince her I should be in the “ good ” group.

Passage 3
(24-25学年高一下·广东化州·期中)
In high school, many students may encounter difficulties in their studies, and so did I. Sometimes, I would become very confused. Math problems that seemed to be impossible to solve, puzzling grammar in English, and difficult historical events all made me feel at a loss. I didn’t know where to start or how to improve.
Moreover, the fierce competition among classmates also added to my anxiety. Seeing others doing well, I couldn’t help but question myself, wondering if I was working hard enough. This sense of uncertainty made me doubt my abilities and future. I was losing patience and drive.
One sunny day, as I was sitting in the classroom feeling a bit bored, my teacher came in and announced that we would have a special project — to plant a tree in the schoolyard. I was excited at the thought of getting outside and doing something different.
I went outside and started digging the hole for the tree. I worked hard, feeling the dirt on my hands and the sweat on my forehead. As I was working, a classmate, Mary, came over and said, “Hey, you’re really putting a lot of effort into this!” I smiled and replied, “Yeah, I want this tree to grow strong. It feels like we’re doing something meaningful.” Mary nodded in agreement, “Definitely. And it’s amazing to think about how we’re all part of this process of growth.”
As the weeks passed, I would visit the tree often, observing the little tree as it faced many challenges, including harsh weather and strong winds. But each time, it overcame them and continued to grow taller and stronger, providing shade and shelter for us. Its journey in the wind and rain was a test of its perseverance (坚持) and growth. It made me wonder whether I could be like the tree, growing and changing.

Passage 4
(24-25学年高一下·江苏南京·期中)
A New Beginning
Ava had always been a shy girl, preferring to spend time with books rather than people. She loved spending her afternoons in the school library, where she could escape into different worlds through the pages of her favorite novels. At school, she rarely spoke to her classmates or teachers. She would sit at the back of the classroom, her head down, avoiding eye contact. Her teachers often called on her, but she would only give short, quiet answers before closing herself off again.
One day, her English teacher, Mrs. James, noticed Ava’s love for stories during a creative writing task. “Ava,” Mrs. James said after class, “I think you have a wonderful imagination.Have you ever thought about joining the drama club? We’re putting on a play next month, and I believe you’d be perfect for the lead role.”
Ava’s face turned red, and she shook her head quickly. “No, I can’t. I’m not good at speaking in front of people. I’d just embarrass myself. I’m afraid to fail.”
Mrs. James smiled gently. “I understand how you feel, but sometimes, we need to step out of our comfort zones and try new things to see how much we can grow. Just give it a try. You might surprise yourself.”
Ava hesitated but finally agreed to try out for the role. To her shock, she was chosen for the lead role. The weeks leading up to the play were filled with practice sessions. At first, Ava struggled to speak loudly enough for others to hear. Her fellow actors, however, were supportive. “You’ve got this, Ava!” one of them said during a practice. “Just imagine you’re telling a story to your friends.”
Slowly, Ava began to open up. She practiced her lines every night, and her confidence grew. On the night of the performance, she stood backstage, her hands trembling. She took a deep breath and reminded herself of Mrs. James’s words.

Passage 1
(24-25学年高一下·湖北武汉新洲区·期中)
Fred and Belle were brother and sister. They were talking about the coming Father’s Day. “Belle, do you know when Father’s Day is celebrated?” Fred asked his sister Belle. “Yes, it is going to be celebrated on June 16 this year. Yesterday my friend and I were talking about it,” Belle replied. “Do you have any idea about how we should celebrate this day and make it memorable for Dad?” Fred asked. “Hmm... I was thinking about it too and have some ideas,” Belle answered excitedly.
“What are you kids talking about?” their Mom asked, entering their room. “Mom, we are wondering about how to celebrate Father’s Day,” Belle said. “Oh, I am surprised you kids can remember the day! Well, I am thinking of cooking some favorite dishes for your father. You both should think of ways to decorate the house beautifully,” Mom said.
“That would be great!” said Belle and Fred together. Both of them got up smiling, thinking of hundreds of ways to celebrate Father’s Day. Mom went to the kitchen, and Belle and Fred started doing their homework. But soon Fred noticed Belle deep in thought so he asked what the matter was. “Fred, I am thinking that our parents do everything for us but they demand nothing from us. Isn’t it bad that we never think about them and are always concerned about our needs?” Belle replied. “Sometimes we are so busy with our lives that we don’t pay proper attention to our parents. We should listen to whatever they say properly and answer them. We must also study hard to get good grades,” Fred said.
The next day, all three of them, Belle, Fred and their Mom, got busy preparing their surprise celebration for Father’s Day. Belle drew a family picture with her crayons (蜡笔). Fred bought balloons and candles and began writing a poem which he planned to sing that day. In short, a lot of things were being planned and prepared.

Passage 2
(24-25学年高一下·山东济南·期中)
“Good news,” Mom said, with a bright smile on her face. “The Parker family wants Surfer. They’ll be here in an hour to take him home.” Surfer had been with us for two days. While I was sad at the thought of seeing him go, I knew I couldn’t keep him.
My family operate a foster home (收养所) for pets. Surfer had been in an animal shelter, and he was sent to us so we could place him with a loving family. Surfer was a cute puppy, so finding a home for him had been very easy. Dad entered Surfer’s information into a pet adoption website, along with some photos, and within a few hours, the Parkers applied to adopt him. Mom looked over their application, and they seemed like responsible people, so she called them.
However, not every dog was so lucky. Zooey was nine years old, and she’d been with us for a few months. It seemed like nobody wanted to adopt an older dog. Dad said that was a shame because older dogs made wonderful companions. Zooey’s previous owner had treated her terribly, and when she was sent to us, she was injured. I remember how angry Dad seemed at the time. “No dog should be treated like that,” he said.
When Zooey came to us, she was upset around everyone. She barked at our two dogs as if in defense and backed away when I tried to approach her. But with our considerate care, it wasn’t long before Zooey trusted us. I took her on walks around the neighborhood and got her used to other people and dogs. She took a real liking to Surfer. In fact, they often curled (蜷缩) together as they napped (打盹).
The Parkers soon arrived, and we all went into the backyard so they could meet with Surfer. Zooey followed us out, her tail wagging (摇, 摆动) lazily, as Surfer rolled in the grass with the two Parker children.

Passage 3
(24-25学年高一下·河北宁晋·期中)
The peaceful little town Cherrywood Dale was made up of colorful houses, each one home to a warm-hearted family. The neighbors were the salt of the earth, always ready to lend a helping hand to one another. However, among them was an exception, an old man named Mr. Johnson, who lived alone in a small cottage.
Mr. Johnson was known for his excellent gardening skills. His gift for gardening had turned his backyard into a beautiful rose garden. However, his passionate devotion to gardening had left him with little time for personal life. His only company was his beloved roses.
Not far from Mr. Johnson’s cottage lived a young couple, Tom and Emily. They were the complete opposite of Mr. Johnson—lively and sociable, always up to something new and exciting. Their home was always filled with the sound of laughter and good cheer. They had a young son named Charlie, who was Mr. Johnson’s favorite neighbor. Charlie’s infectious laughter and boundless energy brought some life to Mr. Johnson’s quiet existence.
One day, Charlie decided to surprise Mr. Johnson by decorating his front yard for the upcoming Harvest Festival. He knew how much Mr. Johnson loved autumn and the changing of the leaves. Charlie enlisted the help of his parents and set to work, painting pumpkins(南瓜)and hanging decorations. They were so caught up in their creation that they ended up accidentally stepping on Mr. Johnson’s prize-winning roses.
The next morning, Mr. Johnson came out of his cottage and saw the beautiful display, his face shining with delight. But his smile quickly turned into a frown(皱眉)when he saw the destroyed roses. He called over Tom and Emily, who were equally displeased by what had happened. They apologized sincerely, promising to replace the roses, but Mr. Johnson was unmoved. The once friendly neighbors became locked in an uneasy standoff. Charlie was heartbroken, not understanding why Mr. Johnson wouldn’t accept their apology.

Ten-year-old Sam Evans was a die-hard football fan, and he’d been saving for months to buy his favorite football kit. However, when he reached the store, he discovered that the kit’s price had risen, and the cost was now a few more dollars than what he’d managed to save.
Disappointed, Sam almost burst into tears, but just then, he heard a voice from behind, He turned and saw Mr, Barney, his neighbor, holding a shopping bag. “Well, you don't seem okay, young man. Tell me if there’s anything l cab do to help you.” Mr. Barney asked. Sam wiped his tears and approached him, explaining that he had saved money for a football kit, “But when I came today, l saw it was a few dollars more than what I have.” Sam cried.
Mr, Barney, with a warm smile, patted Sam on the head and generously offered to cover the extra cost. However, Sam quickly refused the offer. He explained that his mother was always concerned about him spending too much time playing football and had refused to buy him a new kit. She had also told him never to borrow money from anyone, stressing the importance of depending on himself.
Mr. Barney was amused by Sam's honesty. “Well, then how about paying me back right now?” Mr. Barney suggested. “Now?” Sam was puzzled. Mr. Barney explained, “Yes, promise me that you'll pay forward this kindness. Passage 2
(24-25学年高一下·安徽合肥·期中)
A woman named Therese Ojibway often took her son to the wilderness to explore the nature.
One day, they had a usual walk in the woods. The sun shone brightly, and little Jaden held his mother’s hand tightly.
“Mommy, look at the trees! They’re so tall and green!” Jaden cried, pointing upwards with excitement. Ojibway smiled warmly, and her eyes were full of love. “Yes, my dear. This is your safe haven, where you can be yourself and explore all the wonders nature has to offer.”
As they walked deeper into the woods, Jaden’s curiosity grew. He stopped to play with the grass in a while and sometimes looked up into the sky carefully. Watching this, Ojibway felt a relief because only in the woods could Jaden behave freely and open his heart. When Jaden saw butterflies flying from flower to flower, his face lit up with joy. “Mommy, they are so beautiful! Can I catch one?” he asked innocently.
Ojibway looked at Jaden, saying, “Mommy also thinks they are very beautiful. Let’s just watch them dance, OK?” Jaden nodded thoughtfully, watching the butterflies quietly.
As they continued their walk, Jaden spotted something fluttering (拍打) weakly on the ground. It was a butterfly, whose wings were wet and stuck together, unable to fly. “Mommy, the butterfly is hurt! Can we help it?” Jaden asked worriedly.
Ojibway knelt down beside her son, gently picking up the delicate creature in her hands. “Of course, we can, honey. I think we should do something for it. Let’s find a safe place for it to rest and dry its wings.”
Together, they found a sheltered spot under a large tree, where Ojibway carefully placed the butterfly on a soft leaf. “Now, we just need to be patient and let nature do its work,” she said to Jaden. Jaden sat beside his mother, watching eagerly, with his little hand holding hers.

Passage 3
(24-25学年高一下·湖南衡阳·期中)
Cold December wind passed right through my worn coat. I might have wished to be at home, but those days it wasn’t much warmer there than it was standing at the bus stop. Mama had written a letter to the electric company explaining that we were late paying our bill because my sister was ill and Daddy had been laid off, but the power was cut off anyway. That’s why we were on our way into town to pay the bill in person.
I sat close to Buddy Earl for warmth on the bus when it finally showed up. The walk to the electric company office from the bus stop was only a couple of blocks, but it was a relief to get inside.
After settling the bill Mama brought us over to Rich’s department store. There was Santa in a big wooden chair. “You two go talk to him,” she said. “Just don’t expect to get all you ask for.” Buddy Earl and I joined the line of children waiting, and Mama sat on a bench nearby.
Then Santa started talking with us and asked us what we wanted. Santa reached in his pocket, pulled out a notepad and scribbled something with a pencil. “Is your mother with you two?” he asked. I pointed to the bench. “That’s our mama over there. She’s waiting for us to finish.” Santa lifted Buddy Earl off his knee. “Could you ask her to come and talk to me?” he said.
Later, Mama and Santa talked for a few minutes. Santa took a couple more notes. Then Mama brought us home. We didn’t dare ask about their private conversation. Christmas morning Mama and Daddy gathered us around our tree to give thanks for all we had. There were no toys from Santa under the tree. No presents at all, really. But that was okay, especially since we had electricity again. I felt pretty good as I took my seat at the kitchen table.

Passage 1
(24-25学年高一下·福建厦门·期中)
It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the small town were warming up and walking the route(路线)through thick evergreen forest.
I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence. He was small for ten years old. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasn’t with the other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.
What was wrong? He had worked so hard for this event!
I quickly searched the crowd for the school’s coach and asked him what had happened. “I was afraid that kids from other schools would laugh at him,” he explained uncomfortably. “I gave him the choice to run or not, and let him decide.”
I bit back my frustration(懊恼). I knew the coach meant well—he thought he was doing the right thing. After making sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking from side to side as he swung his feet forward.
David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his classmates thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team. It just took him longer—that’s all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run long after the other children, he did always finish. As a special education teacher at the school, I was familiar with the challenges David faced and was proud of his strong determination.

Jake was new to the school-a shy freshman feeling at a loss for high school life. He often found himself lost in the sea of faces and lockers. Ms. Brock, his English teacher, noticed this quiet young man from the first day of class.
One afternoon, Jake was wandering (徘徊) the halls, trying to find the library. He noticed Ms. Brock in the office grading papers with full attention. It seemed that Ms. Brock had forgotten the world around her. Keeping up his courage, Jake came to her.
“Um, excuse me, Ms. Brock?” Jake’s voice was shaking slightly.
Ms. Brock looked up, her eyes filled with warmth.“ Yes, Jake? How can I help you?”
Jake hesitated (犹豫), in broken sentences, “I... I’m trying to find the library. Could you, uh, tell me where it is?”
Ms. Brock’s face broke into a smile, “Of course! It’s down the hall, second door on your left. You can’t miss it.”
Relief (宽慰) washed over Jake’s face. “Thank you, Ms. Brock.”
As the weeks passed, Jake turned to Ms. Brock for help more often. Whether it was talking about his homework or simply sharing his thoughts on the latest book they were studying, he found comfort in her patient encouragement. Ms. Brock, in turn, noticed Jake’s growing confidence.
Everything went on well till a rainy Thursday afternoon. Jake held a test paper in his hand after class. There was a C on the paper. Ms. Brock walked to him.
“Everything alright, Jake?”
Jake replied, “I... I’m not sure if I can keep up with the class. The reading is getting harder, and I feel I’m falling behind.”
Ms. Brock’s expression softened,“ Jake, learning is not a race. It’s about understanding at your own speed. You’re doing great-I see your hard work every day.”

Jeremy Savage, aged 17, and Lan Marshall, aged 16, who both played basketball in the school team, have been best friends for more than ten years. Last weekend, they went to the Rocky Mountains with their parents. On Saturday morning, the two boys decided to climb Cathedral Mountain by themselves while their parents relaxed at the campsite. They enjoyed mountain climbing, singing and chatting all the way. After three hours, they reached the top with no problems. The scenery on the mountaintop was so attractive that they couldn’t move their feet, taking photos all the time to share with others.
However, a trouble came when they started to climb down the mountain. As they went down, the weather got bad. The road became slippery (湿滑的). Then another trouble occurred. On one very dangerous part of the path, Lan fell three metres off the side of the path. They both knew that if Jeremy Savage continued alone, he would probably get back safely. Jeremy realized exactly that he couldn’t help his friend by himself, and he needed help, but he did not want to leave his friend.
Immediately, he climbed down to where Lan was without hesitation. He wanted to help Lan stand up, but Lan was badly injured and could not move. So, he used water from his own bottle to clean the dirt and blood from Lan’s face and hands firstly. They had to wait and hope that someone would come and help them. Unfortunately, several hours later, no one appeared. Lan asked Jeremy to leave alone, but Jeremy refused. The two boys sat together, thinking about how to save themselves.
When the boys did not return to the campsite that evening, their parents became very worried. They got in touch with park workers and began searching for the boys. Soon more than 20 people were looking for the boys, calling their names. Their parents hoped that they would see the two boys before night fall.

Passage 4
(24-25学年高一下·江苏南京·期中)
Last summer, my friend Jake and I decided to go on a weekend hiking trip in the Rocky Mountains. We were both experienced day hikers but had never ventured deep into the wilderness alone. Excited for the adventure, we packed light — just a couple of water bottles, some snacks, a first-aid kit, and a lighter. We didn’t bother with a map, compass, or extra clothing, assuming the marked trail would be enough. That decision nearly cost us everything.
We started early in the morning, following a well-known trail that promised stunning views of the valley. The weather was perfect — clear skies and a gentle breeze. By noon, we reached a high viewpoint where we could see endless green valleys and sharp mountain peaks. Jake shouted excitedly, his voice echoing through the mountains. I laughed confidently, feeling completely safe.
Then, everything changed.
Dark clouds rolled in faster than we expected. Within minutes, the sky turned black, and a cold wind swept. Before we could react, rain poured down. The trail, once dry and easy to follow, turned into a slippery, muddy mess. We tried to hurry back, but visibility dropped to almost zero.
After an hour of stumbling through the storm, we realized we were no longer on the trail. The markers had disappeared, and our phones had no signal. Jake suggested we keep moving downhill, hoping to find a road or a ranger station (公园管理处). But the terrain (地形) was steep and dangerous, with loose rocks and fallen branches blocking our path.
As daylight faded, the temperature dropped dangerously low. We were wet and cold. Jake, trying to stay calm, suggested we find shelter for the night and wait for daybreak.
We spotted a small overhang of rocks — not quite a cave, but enough to block some of the rain. Using the lighter, we managed to start a weak fire. It wasn’t much, but the flickering flames gave us hope.

Passage 1
(24-25学年高一下·江苏如皋·期中)
After my family moved to America, we lived on Pearl Street in New York’s Chinatown. Below our flat, my family ran a bakery. My mother named me after the street: Pearl Wong.
A typical Chinese-style mum, my mother often reminded me of the importance of being outstanding. “Be number one, or be nothing,” she demanded in broken English. She would check my report cards and frown at anything lower than an A.
At a holiday party, my brother received a chess set, missing a pawn (卒) and a knight (马). My mother dismissed it as unwanted junk, but we were fascinated, especially me.
“Why can't they move more steps?” “Why do they go cross ways to take other men?” I had so many questions. My mother patted the flour off her hands. “Let me see book,” she said. “Ah. Don't know why? You find out yourself.”
So I read and memorized the rules, studied the moves, and practiced endlessly. Soon, I was beating my brothers. With every game, my chess improved, my wins grew, and my hunger for victory deepened.
I started entering tournaments and winning trophies (奖杯). My mother became my biggest supporter—but in her own way. She pushed me to win every game and displayed every trophy in the bakery window. I asked her several times not to do so but she insisted. Soon, the cakes were surrounded by rows of shining trophies. “This my daughter, Pearl,” she would tell others, her voice full of pride. But the more she showed me off, the more I felt trapped, as if I were no longer playing for myself, as if I were her trophy.
One Saturday in Chinatown, my mother paraded (招摇过市) me through the stores, without making a purchase. “This my daughter, Pearl Wong, Chinatown chess champion,” she announced. The shopkeepers, with forced smiles, looked at us with an obviously growing impatience.

Passage 2
(24-25学年高一下·湖南长沙雅礼·期中)
The New Kid in Class
At the beginning of the new term, every student came to school happily. One day, Jackson, a friendly student, sat at his school desk and looked over at the new kid in class. His name was Billy, who just moved here from Florida. His first day in class was yesterday and, so far, Jackson had not talked to him. Today, at rest, Jackson was going to try to make a new friend.
When the bell rang for a rest, Jackson hurried out of his seat and followed Billy outside.
”Hi Billy,“ Jackson said with a smile as they walked outside. ”Do you want to play basketball?“
”No. I’m not very good at basketball. “
”Do you want to play kickball? “ Jackson asked again.
”No. I’m not good at that either, “ Billy said. Billy walked away from Jackson and sat on a big flat rock in the grassy part of the school yard.
Jackson stood there and wondered what to do next. He asked Billy to do two things and both times Billy said no. He felt a little depressed. Maybe Billy didn’t like to get along with Jackson. Maybe he didn’t want to be friends. Jackson thought about playing basketball with the other kids. He looked over at Billy sitting on the rock all by himself. It must be hard to move to a new school, Jackson thought. He decided to give it one more try and let him be his friend. What would be a better one? He paced backwards and forwards nervously.
It was at that time that Jackson reached into his pocket and pulled out two toy cars that his brother gave him before. His brother has tons of cars and always gives him his old ones. It was the two cars that made him give it one more try.

Passage 1
(24-25学年高一下·江苏江宁·期中)
My heart sank when I received the news—no salary again. How would I manage the increasing bills, the groceries and my children’s needs? The future seemed hopeless. With a heavy heart, I hurried to pick up my two children, my mind racing wildly.
That’s when I saw it—a wallet, lying on the sidewalk. It was as if fate had thrown me a lifeline (救生索). Hope came to me as I approached it. The wallet was large, and when I opened it, my eyes widened in disbelief at the sight of a large amount of cash inside it. I hesitated for a moment, torn between the immediate relief that this money promised and the morality (道德) of keeping it.
Curiosity led me to search through the wallet. The things it contained were a photo and a couple of business cards. No matter how much I wanted to take the contents, my moral principles and inner voice told me not to do this. The decision became clear; I couldn’t keep this money. It wasn’t rightfully mine.
I picked out a business card. The name and number were there. With a deep breath, I dialed the number and explained my find to the voice on the other end. The voice came, completely emotionless, warning that they would come to me. He hung up without even saying “thank you”. I was angry with the impoliteness. I even regretted my decision, but my conscience (良知) did not allow me to go back on my choice. I had told the voice where I lived and went to get my children.
Shortly after we arrived home, a large black car suddenly pulled up to our house. The driver got out and knocked on the door. When I opened it, the driver told me that the owner of the wallet wanted me to personally hand over his wallet.

Passage 2
(24-25学年高一下·江西上饶·期中)
It was a summer evening. Alex, who lived in a suburban neighborhood, was getting ready for bed when he heard the sound of fire alarms and screams coming from the outside. He quickly realized that there was a fire in his neighborhood and that his neighbors might be in danger.
He looked outside and saw that one of his neighbors’ houses was on fire. He knew that he had to act quickly to help his neighbors. After calling 911, he ran outside and heard his neighbors’ little son crying inside their burning house. “He must be quite scared,” Alex thought.
Alex quickly assessed the situation and found that the house was almost surrounded by flames (火焰). The best way out was through the front door, but it was blocked by fire as well. He knew that he had to find another way to help the boy escape.
He ran back to his house, grabbed a ladder and then rushed toward his neighbors’ house. He placed the ladder against the second-story window and managed to help the little boy climb down to safety. Once the boy was safe on the ground, Alex climbed up into the burning house again to see if anyone else was trapped.
As he made his way through the smoke, he heard cries for help from a bedroom on the third floor. He quickly ran up the stairs and found an elderly woman who was too weak to move. Alex quickly picked her up and carried her down the stairs to safety. By this time, many firemen had arrived, and they managed to put out the flames.
Looking around, Alex saw that other houses in the neighborhood were also on fire. He realized that the fire was spreading quickly and that more people needed help. Passage 3
(24-25学年高一下·陕西周至·期中)
The spot of red was what first caught Randy Heiss’s attention on December 16.
He was hiking behind his ranch (牧场) in Patagonia, Arizona, a town near the US — Mexico border, when he found a balloon on the grass. Heiss walked towards it with his dog, thinking he would pick up something useless and throw it away.
That’s when he noticed the balloon was connected to a piece of paper. “Dayami”, it read on one side, in a child’s writing. Turning the paper over, he saw a numbered list, all in Spanish. “My Spanish isn’t very good, but I could see it was a Christmas,” he said.
Heiss was attracted. He thought that maybe a child had tried to send Santa Claus a Christmas wish list by balloon, something he used to do himself when he was a kid. Nobody had ever returned the letters Heiss had sent, but he wondered whether he could find the kid who had sent this one.
It would be difficult, but he believed he could work it out. About 32 kilometers to the southwest, just across the border, was the city of Nogales, Mexico. “Based on the prevailing wind (盛行风), I was pretty sure that’s where it came from,” he said.
Heiss brought the note home to his wife, who is good at Spanish and helped him translate (翻译) the list. The elderly couple figured out that Dayami, probably a girl, had asked for a doll, a dollhouse, clothes and some art supplies.
Heiss then posted on social media (社交媒体) along with some photos, hoping some of his friends in Nogales might know the girl’s family. A few days passed with no useful information provided; Heiss worried that time was running out before Christmas. On December 19, he decided to send a message to Radio XENY, a radio station (广播台) based in Nogales.

【答案】
Paragraph l:
I fought back tears as I walked up to Mrs. Bartlett. Before I opened my mouth, she gently placed a hand on my shoulder, saying with a knowing smile, “ I know what you want, but your group needs you. ” So stunned was I that I couldn’t utter a single word for a moment. She had seen something in me that I hadn’t seen. Suddenly, a mixture of guilt as well as pride seized me. The power of being trusted made me stand straighter. “ I’ll help them. ” I replied in a firm voice. I couldn’t believe it came out of my mouth, but it did.
Paragraph 2:
Halfway through the week, I felt myself enjoying the company of these three misfits. The project was going smoothly with our joint efforts. Besides, I found out Mauro was struggling with English, Juliette wore long skirts because of her religion and Rachel dreamed to be a fashion designer. They weren’t misfits, just people that no one cared enough about to try to understand — except Mrs. Bartlett. I was lucky to be given a chance to see other people in a new light. Mrs. Bartlett gave us an A on that assignment, which should be handed back, for she was the one who truly deserved it.

【答案】
One day, as I stood by the tree lost in thought, my teacher approached me. She asked, “What are you thinking about?” I explained my realization about the tree and how it mirrored my struggles. My teacher smiled warmly and said, “That’s exactly right. Just like the tree, you will face challenges, but you must keep growing. You need to persevere, adapt, and find strength within yourself. Remember, every difficulty you overcome makes you stronger.” Her words impressed me deeply, and I felt a renewed sense of determination. I decided then and there to approach my studies with the same persistence as the tree.
Reflecting on it now, I realize this conversation was a turning point in my life. Inspired by the tree’s growth and my teacher’s encouragement, I began to tackle my academic challenges. Slowly but surely, I noticed improvements in my grades. More importantly, I learned to consider challenges as opportunities for growth. This shift in mindset not only helped me academically but also taught me a lifelong lesson about the power of perseverance and the beauty of continuous learning. Whenever I face obstacles now, I remember the tree and the wisdom it taught me, reminding me that with patience and determination, I can overcome any adversity.

As the curtains opened, Ava stepped onto the stage. When Ava began her first lines, her voice was soft but clear. As the play went on, she became less nervous. She moved across the stage with ease, her voice growing stronger and filled with emotion. When the play ended, there was a moment of quietness before the audience burst into loud clapping. Ava had done it — she had faced her fear and succeeded! At the moment, the first thing that came to her mind was to thank Mrs. James.
Backstage, Ava couldn’t stop smiling as she saw Mrs.James approaching her. She thanked Mrs. James. “You believed in me when I was unsure of myself,” Ava said.Mrs. James smiled and replied, “You did this all on your own. I just gave you a little push.” For the first time, Ava felt proud of herself. She realized that trying something new had allowed her to discover a part of herself she never knew existed. The fear of failure no longer held her back, and she knew this was just the beginning of many more opportunities to come.

【答案】
Finally, Father’s Day came. Fred and Belle started decorating the house. Fred cleaned the living room and continued with the decoration, putting up the colorful balloons and presenting the birthday cake. At the same time, Belle took out the family picture. They were about to practice singing the poem when the delicious smell came from the kitchen. Surely, it was Mom that prepared the big meal. French toast and chicken porridge, both of which were father’s favorite foods, were ready. Eventually, everything was settled. Fred and Belle stood beside the door, waiting for their father eagerly. Soon Dad came in.
Fred and Belle were very excited to see their father. They cried out together, “Happy Father’s Day!” and then sang the poem loudly. Hearing the words and the poem, so glad was Dad that his face lit up. “We have a surprise for you!” added Fred, pointing at the decorations. “I love them very much!” Dad said excitelly and gave Fred, Belle and Mom a big hug. When he saw the dinner, his eyes widened and twinkled with excitement. He couldn’t help tasting a bit of the chicken soup, explaining that it was the best dish he had ever had. Mom smiled heartily and exchanged a gentle glance with Fred and Belle. What a beautiful and sweet surprise! The room was filled with happiness.

【答案】One possible version:
When Surfer got tired, he wandered back to Zooey. Zooey still wagged its tail lazily and sniffed around Surfer, while Surfer curled around Zooey, without any intention to leave with the Parkers. When it was time to leave, Dad called Surfer gently and guided him to the Parkers’ car. However, Surfer followed Dad unwillingly, turning around to gaze at Zooey. Meanwhile, Zooey rushed towards Surfer, barking in sadness as if they would never meet again. The Parkers and our family all are unwilling to see this scene. Dad told Zooey’s story to Mr. and Mrs. Parker.
Mr. and Mrs. Parker asked if they could adopt Zooey too. “Are you sure?” Dad asked. “Absolutely!” Mr. Parker nodded. “She has been through a lot. I’d hate to separate her from her best friend.” Hearing this, the children both cracked into smiles, because they knew this was the best ending for the two dogs. Zooey and Surfer suddenly rushed to each other and curled together as if they understood the agreement, with tails wagging crazily to show their happiness. Seeing the Parkers and two dogs off, we were thrilled to find a loving family for them.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Then one afternoon, Emily decided to make the first move. She went to local florist’s and asked around for the roses that looked like Mr. Johnson’s. Immediately she managed to replace the destroyed roses and tended the delicate flowers cautiously with the help of Tom and Charlie. Seeing the thoughtful acts, Mr. Johnson finally realized that he overreacted that day and made an apology for his misbehavior. However, what the family cared most was whether what they did could make for his loss and cheered him up.
Mr. Johnson was moved by the three’s sincere understanding. He made up his mind to take care of the roses together with the family. As the Harvest Festival approached, the flowers unfolded smiles gradually, which revived his garden. Mr. Johnson expressed how he loved the works of art Charlie created. He even invited the whole family to dinner in his cottage where laughter and happiness had never existed before. The roses, though once destroyed, brought Mr. Johnson something more precious—kindness and genuineness as well as an open heart.

Jaden watched with bated breath, his hand tightly holding his mother’s. “It’s working, Mommy,” he said softly, eyes shining with hope. Ojibway nodded, whispering encouragement to both her son and the little creature. Soon enough, the butterfly gave a few tentative flutters before taking off gently from the leaf.
“Yes, we did it!” Ojibway smiled, turning to her son. Jaden beamed back, filled with pride and joy. “We helped it fly again, Mommy!” He exclaimed, clapping his hands. Ojibway hugged him close, feeling his excitement. “You see, honey, sometimes all someone needs is a little help to get back on their feet.” As they walked home through the woods, Jaden kept looking up at the sky, hoping to catch another glimpse of the butterfly. The day was not just about rescuing an insect; it was a lesson in kindness and patience that would stay with him for years to come.

Suddenly, there was a knock at the door. Daddy opened it to a man I’d never seen before. He was holding a big box. “this is for you and your family,” he said, “Merry Christmas!” The man was gone before Daddy even had a chance to invite him in. Daddy put the box on the table and opened it up. Inside was an envelope and a lot of food! Daddy read the letter from the envelope. “May you be happy!”
Paragraph 2:
Mama and Daddy looked at each other, and she unpacked the food from the box. The first thing was a big can of pork and beans. Buddy Earl’s eyes went wide. “An angel came to our door today,” Mama said as she pulled out a big box of Sugar Crisp. With gratitude, we had a happy Christmas. Not long after the festival, Daddy was called back to work. My sister recovered from her illness. I even received a new coat, which was thicker than my old one and kept me warm.

【答案】
We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn’t look at me. I said gently and quietly, “No one can change your mind, except yourself. If you desire to challenge yourself, there is nothing to do with others’ thoughts.” He sat still with a deep breath. “You have a full preparation before this event, which is the most important reason why you show up here”, I added with a sincere tone. Hearing my words, David turned to me tremblingly with tears spilling out of his eyes and expressed he had made a firm determination to finish the cross-country run. His coach heard what David said and gave me a look—the kind that was more determined than anyone else’s.
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. The race started. It seemed that the runway was extremely long for young children, not to mention a child with a brain disease. David insisted on running as if he had forgotten all his weaknesses, though he was tripped over within the a few kilometers. It didn’t take long before he picked himself up again and continued his mission. Classmates all appeared on the racing track, cheering for him. “Come on! You can make it! We are proud of you!” they shouted enthusiastically. To everyone’s joy, he reached the final line and ranked the 20th. It was no more important whether he won the first place or not. It was his brave heart and strong faith that could make something unusual happen finally.

Passage 2
(24-25学年高一下·上东济宁·期中)
Jake lowered his head, “I just... I want to do well. But sometimes it feels difficult to deal with it.”

Ms. Brock nodded knowingly. “It’s OK to feel a sense of loss sometimes. It means you’re challenging yourself. But remember, I’m here to help. We’ll work out the problem together, alright? I believe you can make it.” Jake raised his eyes from his paper slowly, with a small smile on his face. From then on, Jake put his whole heart into his schoolwork. Another test came as expected. And two days later, Jake got the test result—A. His hard work and Ms. Brock’s encouragement paid off.
With the score, Jake rushed to Ms. Brock’s office excitedly. “I just want to say... thank you, Ms. Brock. For everything,” Jake said. “You’ve grown so much, Jake. Remember, learning doesn’t stop here. Keep exploring, keep questioning, and never stop believing in yourself,” Ms. Brock said with pride. Jake nodded, “I will. Thank you, Ms. Brock.” As Jake turned to leave, Ms. Brock called after him,“ Oh, and Jake?” He turned back. “You’ll always have a home here,” she said softly. Jake walked out of the office, carrying with Ms. Brock’s invaluable support.

Passage 3
(24-25学年高一下·湖南衡阳·期中)

Paragraph 1
As night fell, the boys were still missing. The temperature dropped sharply, and the wind howled through the trees, making the situation even more desperate. Jeremy wrapped his jacket around Lan to keep him warm, but he knew it wasn’t enough. They both felt scared and helpless, but Jeremy kept reassuring Lan that they would be found soon. Meanwhile, the search party continued their efforts, using flashlights and shouting the boys’ names into the darkness. The parents’ hearts were heavy with worry, praying for their sons’ safety. Every passing minute felt like an eternity.
Paragraph 2
At sunrise, Jeremy decided that the only way to help his friend was to carry him. He knew it would be a difficult and dangerous task, but he couldn’t bear to leave Lan behind. With great effort, Jeremy lifted Lan onto his back and began the slow, painful descent down the mountain. Every step was a struggle, but he never gave up. Finally, after what seemed like hours, they heard the voices of the search party. Relief washed over them as they were finally rescued and taken to safety. The boys’ parents hugged them tightly, tears of joy streaming down their faces.

【答案】范文:
The awful night rolled slowly away and it tested our limits. The wind roared, and every bustle in the bushes made our muscles tense. Was that just the wind or something more dangerous? The tiny fire provided little warmth, only reminding us how cold we really were. We clutched our knees to our chest. Thoughts of my warm home and family made me regret our careless attitude. We had no emergency blanket, no extra food or water, no way to call for help and we could do nothing but pray the day broke sooner.
Finally, dawn came and the rain stopped. The world was deadly quiet, as if holding its breath. We staggered downhill, our bodies aching. Every step was a struggle. Then came the distant sound of an engine and we staggered toward it. My vision blurred with exhaustion, but the hope of rescue pushed me forward. When the ranger’s truck finally appeared, tears of relief and regret streamed down my cheeks. This experience taught me a valuable lesson that venturing into the wild required both good preparations and deep respect for nature.

【答案】
Yet, she went on and on, totally ignoring my burning eyes. I was so angry that I wanted to scream at her. But I knew it would be useless. So I walked off quickly, leaving her talking with others. I wandered aimlessly through the streets, not knowing where to go. After a long time, I found myself in front of a chess shop. The chess sets in the window were so attractive that I couldn’t help but stare at them. How I wished I could have one of them!
When I finally returned to the bakery, my mother was putting away the trophies. She looked at me with a sad expression. “Pearl, you must be hungry. I’ve prepared your favorite food.” I didn’t answer, just sitting there staring at the floor. “I'm sorry, Pearl,” she said in a low voice. “I shouldn’t have shown you off like that. It’s because I love you so much and I’m so proud of you.” Hearing this, I burst into tears. “Mom, I’m sorry too. I shouldn’t have left you alone. You’re always doing your best for me. ” We hugged each other tightly.

Billy expressed his apology to his previous rejections and showed great thanks to Jackson’s inviting him to play. He told Jackson he had a hard time making friends.
“Well, you made one friend today,” Jackson said. Hearing that, Billy’s eyes were widely open because he couldn’t believe what had happened. And then his smile lit up the whole ground and he shook hands with Jackson tightly. At last Jackson invited Billy to come to his house and see other cars .Jackson was also happy that he did not give up one more try and finally made a new friend.

【答案】
I didn’t want to do so, but I agreed to go with the driver at last. After a while, the car stopped at a house, and I met the owner. He was a man with a not-gentle face. But soon, his face was lightened by a bright smile, and he revealed to me that all the money in the world could not replace the photo of his beloved daughter that he always carried in his wallet. His beloved daughter lived on the other side of the planet and they saw each other very rarely. After his story, he surprised me with an unexpected proposal.
He wanted to reward me for my honesty and kind act. I was awkward with his offer of a financial reward, but I could not refuse it. So I accepted and was even more pleased when I heard he would offer me a job to work for him under much better conditions and salary than my current job. My heart was beating with a mixture of emotions—relief and gratitude. My answer came quickly. This day will forever remain in my memories as the one in which my moral values and correct decisions helped change my life for the better.

Without hesitation, Alex joined those firemen, who were working tirelessly to put out the flames. He helped elderly neighbors, families with young children, and even pets.

【答案】
After hours of effort, fortunately, the fire was finally put out. Exhausted but relieved, Alex sat on the curb, watching as the firefighters checked for any remaining hot spots. His neighbors gathered around him, expressing their gratitude for his bravery. The little boy he had rescued clung to his parents, his tear-streaked face now calm. The elderly woman, though shaken, managed a weak smile as she thanked him. Despite the chaos, the community felt closer than ever, united by the crisis they had faced together.
When he woke up the next morning, a call from his principal came in. The principal informed him that the news of his heroic actions had spread, and the school wanted to honor him at an assembly. Alex, still processing the events of the previous night, felt a mix of humility and pride. Later that day, as he stood before his classmates, he realized that helping others wasn’t just about bravery — it was about compassion and responsibility. His story inspired many, proving that even in the darkest moments, kindness could shine the brightest.

The girl’s parents were overjoyed and grateful, explaining that Dayami had been hoping for those presents for weeks. They had been struggling financially and couldn’t afford to buy them for her. Heiss was relieved and excited to know that he had found the right girl. He quickly gathered the presents that Dayami had asked for and prepared to deliver them.
Arriving at the Radio XENY offices with presents, the elderly couple finally met the excited little girl. Dayami’s face lit up with joy when she saw the doll, dollhouse, clothes, and art supplies.
