But it has changed a lot. As more and more tourists come to visit my hometown, many people here live a better life and have their own cars now. I’m very pleased with these moves. I spent two years in Beijing as a student in the late 2000s and I recently went back there for a holiday. I couldn’t believe that so many changes took place in such a short time. Now the roads are much wider and far busier than before, filled with cars, buses, and motorcycles day and night. The buildings have also changed. Fifty years ago, most buildings were short, simple, and made of brick or wood. Today, they are much taller and more modern, with glass and steel structures everywhere. The environment (环境) has changed too. The air was fresher and cleaner before, but now it is more polluted because of the growing number of factories and cars. However, people are trying to plant more trees and build parks to make the city greener and healthier. There are also more fun and convenient places now. We have a huge new shopping mall which is larger, brighter, and more exciting than the old market. People can go to work by car, bus or subway. A new big park has been built, and it has a playground, a lake and many trees. Children can play there happily. My family has also changed. We used to live in a small house, but now we live in a big apartment. My father used to work in a small factory, but now he works in a big company. After a few hours, I noticed a little girl playing by herself. It looked like she built a sandcastle and was now trying to fill it with water. The sandcastle looked beautiful in the summer sunshine.     Unluckily, there was no container around to carry water. She would go to the waves, cup her hands and then walk back to her little castle. Sadly, not much of the water was kept in her hands every time she returned to the castle. But she kept trying and was still smiling and hopeful. So I wished I could help her out. As I was standing there watching her, I suddenly realized I had a bottle of water in my bag. I quickly took it out and walked over to give it to her. Uncertain of what to do first, she shook her head shyly, saying no. I reassured (安慰) her it would make getting the water faster. She smiled widely and finally took it. Not wanting her to feel uncomfortable, I walked off the beach right away. I want the player to sing!” The waiter shouted across the room, “Hey, friend! If you want to get paid, sing a song!” So he did. He had never sung in public before. But a soft voice spoke, “She needs help.” Finally, Mary moved to that seat. The girl was named Emily. She had been in a car accident and now was on her way for treatment. When the snack and juice arrived, Mary realized that Emily could not feed herself. Mary considered offering to feed her but hesitated (犹豫), as it seemed too impolite to offer a service to a stranger. She can see Tom standing outside in the rain. He’s shouting at Jan to tell her to come outside. Jan gets dressed, puts on her jacket and goes downstairs quietly, trying not to wake Tom’s parents up. “What are you doing, Tom?” “The storm!” he says, “It’s the same storm as Thursday night’s. Let’s go to the tree. Maybe you can go home!” Jan follows Tom down the road and then she remembers something. “The time capsule (胶囊)!” Tom shows her the biscuit tin under his jacket. “I’ve got it.” And now there’s the possibility that she can return to the future. Soon they come to the river and then the old building. They run up the path through the trees and arrive at the piece of land with the apple tree. “Now what do we do?” asks Jan. “I put the time capsule back where I found it and...” “And I go home. ” “Yes. ” Tom uses his hands to dig a hole by the tree. He buries the time capsule and then stands up. Jan suddenly thinks of something. “Tom! I want to give you something from the time capsule.” “No. I don’t want anything. Back then, it was in an old building on Yan’an Road. Dad used to work at a seafood processing factory. As we walked past the fish specimens, he was excited to share his knowledge. “This fish sells fast,” he told me. “It tastes great.” The other visitors turned to stare (盯着) at us as we walked on. But when we were back in the hall to see the dinosaurs carefully, Dad was silent. Clearly, these giants couldn’t be eaten. (If they were still alive, we might be on their menu!) The star exhibit was a Mamenchisaurus (马门溪龙). It stood 22 meters tall and held its long neck high. I couldn’t take my eyes off it. Many questions raced through my mind: What did it do all day? How much did it eat? What was our planet like when it was alive? And why did it—and all the other dinosaurs—disappear? In 2015, the Natural History Museum moved to Jing’an. To celebrate the tenth birthday of its new home, it’s hosting a special dinosaur exhibition where you can see a Mamenchisaurus. But it’s a little different from the one I saw in the old museum. Over time, scientists have learned more about these dinosaurs. Now they believe they couldn’t hold up their long necks very high. There are still many unknowns about these ancient animals. Then, she remembered. This was Green Gables and they didn’t want her because she wasn’t a boy! She looked out of the window. It was such a beautiful place. She wished they would not send her away. During the drive back to the station, Marilla said, “It’s five miles, and since you enjoy talking so much, you can tell me what you know about yourself.” “I was eleven last March”, said Anne.“And I was born in Bolingbroke, Nova Scotia. My father and mother were teachers. They were very poor and lived in a small yellow house in Bolingbroke. My mother died from a fever soon after I was born, and my father died four days later from a fever, too.” “I lived with some people called Thomas until I was eight years old and helped look after their other children. She began to think it was a pity the girl had to be sent back to the children’s home. Marilla thought long and hard about keeping Anne. She knew that her brother wanted to keep her, and she saw that the girl was clever, even if she liked to dream. The next afternoon, Marilla said to the little girl, “Sit down and listen. We have decided that you may stay here. You must go to school when it opens again in September.” “Oh, thank you,” Anne said happily. Anne had been at Green Gables a fortnight (两星期) before Mrs Lynde came to see what she was like. “You’re not much to look at,” Mrs Lynde said. “You’re very thin and plain. And your face has freckles and your hair is the colour of carrots.” “I hate you,” cried Anne. “I hate you! Passage 13 The Great Fire of London started in the very early hours of September 2nd, 1666. In four days it destroyed (破坏) more than three-quarters of the old city, where most of the houses were wooden and close together. One hundred thousand people became homeless, but only a few lost their lives. The fire started on Sunday morning in the house of the king’s baker (面包师) in Pudding Lane. The baker, with his wife and family, was able to get out through a window in the roof. A strong wind blew the fire from the bakery into a small hotel next door. Then it spread (蔓延) quickly into Thames Street. That was the beginning.     By eight o’clock three hundred houses were on fire. On Monday nearly a kilometer of the city was burning along the River Thames. Tuesday was the worst day. Many poor people stayed in their houses until the last moment. Birds fell out of the air because of the heat. The fire stopped only when the king finally ordered people to destroy hundreds of buildings in the path of the fire. With nothing left to burn, the fire became weak and finally died out. As soon as the class was over, Tom went to Mr Smith’s office. A few minutes later, Tom returned with Mr Smith and four students from another class. And the classroom became an interesting place. Everyone was excited, waiting for a long, heated discussion between the two teachers. We weren’t disappointed. Right then and there, Mr Smith and Mr Green began their argument (争论). There are many interesting things along the way, and best of all, there will be a surprise at the end of the trail.” “What kind of surprise?” asked Jenny. “It won’t be a surprise if we tell you,” laughed her mom. “The sooner you get ready to go, the sooner you’ll find out.” They set out for hiking soon. It was a good day for seeing wildlife. Along the trail, the trees were filled with kinds of birds flying around. Hearing a noise in the grass, they stopped and saw two rabbits crossing the trail. After a while, Mike noticed several monkeys in the trees and Mr. Smith took photos before they ran away. Then, they continued their hiking. Jenny and Mike were discussing what kind of snake they had just seen on the way. At this moment, they came to an open area with some small pools. The kids’ eyes grew wide. Steam (蒸汽) rose into the air. “They’re hot springs (温泉),” explained Mr. Smith. “The heat is produced from inside Earth.” “Could we have a bath (洗澡) in the spring if we have our bathing suits?” asked Jenny. Fifty years ago, most buildings were short, simple, and made of brick or wood. Today, they are much taller and more modern, with glass and steel structures everywhere. However, people are trying to plant more trees and build parks to make the city greener and healthier. There are also more fun and convenient places now. We have a huge new shopping mall which is larger, brighter, and more exciting than the old market. Dad took me to visit the Shanghai Natural History Museum. We keep guessing and piecing together the puzzle. As we learn about their world, we also learn more about our own. Dinosaurs ruled the Earth for about 165 million years. Then, Mr Thomas was killed when he fell under a train. Then, Mrs Hammond took me, and I lived with her for two years and looked after all her children. Then, she died. Nobody wanted me, so I was put in a children’s home.” Marilla asked no more questions. She felt sorry for Anne. The child had had a hard life, living with people who did not really want her. I hate you!” “What a temper!” cried Mrs Lynde. “Anne, go to your room and stay there until I come up,” said Marilla. Anne ran to her room, crying. The fire destroyed many well-known buildings, old St. Paul’s and the Guildhall among them.     Samuel Pepys, the famous writer, wrote about the fire. People threw their things into the river. Many poor people stayed in their houses until the last moment. Birds fell out of the air because of the heat. The fire stopped only when the king finally ordered people to destroy hundreds of buildings in the path of the fire. With nothing left to burn, the fire became weak and finally died out. After the fire, Christopher Wren, the architect (建筑师), wanted a city with wider streets and fine new houses of stone. In fact, the streets are still narrow; but he did build more than fifty churches, among them new St. Paul’s.     The fire caused great pain and loss, but after it London was a better place: a city for the future and not just of the past. 1. How was the fire put out according to the text? A.The king and his soldiers came to help. B.People pulled down houses standing in the direction of the fire. C.People managed to get enough water from the river. D.All the wooden houses in the city were destroyed. 4. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A.The Great Fire of London ended on September 4th, 1666. B.Many birds were burned in the fire because they couldn’t fly away in time. C.The King’s baker caused the great fire. D.No loss, no gain. London became a better place because of the great fire. 【答案】1. C 2. D 3. B 4. They discussed the plan for the day at table. “Dad and I looked at a map last night,” said Mrs. Smith. “We found a nearby trail (小径). They looked at their parents. “Is this the surprise?” asked Mike in excitement. Mr. and Mrs. Smith smiled as they walked over to one of the small pools. Steam (蒸汽) rose into the air. “They’re hot springs (温泉),” explained Mr. Smith. “The heat is produced from inside Earth.” “Could we have a bath (洗澡) in the spring if we have our bathing suits?” asked Jenny. Mrs. Smith nodded. “Your bathing suits are in the bag.” She laughed, putting her feet into the spring water. “I can’t believe it! Mom and Dad, this is a great surprise.” Jumped Jenny. 1.
