B
I was one of those children who enjoyed counting to ten in different languages while I brushed my teeth. When I went to university, I chose to major in French and Spanish. I cannot say I studied particularly hard; though I did get to live in Paris and then Barcelona, where I had many opportunities to pursue my various interests and hobbies.
I was frequently asked about what I planned to “do” with my language degree, and it wasn’t until after a decade of thinking that I finally had a satisfying response. I always take exception to the idea that language is just a “tool” — a means to ask for directions or defend yourself when you have trouble with the locals. It depresses me to hear people say that AI will make language learning pointless. To me, language is not just something to be used. It shapes the way we perceive and experience the world.
This is not a novel insight. Edward Sapir and Benjamin Lee Whorf were made famous by the film Arrival. They proposed that the structure of language informs the thinking style and world view of its speakers, and that language determines how we see the world. The 18th-century German Romantic philosopher Johann Georg Hamann also wrote that the features of a people’s language will correspond to the direction of their mentality.
It’s a matter of debate as to whether speakers of Guugu Yimithirr, a native language in Australia, have a better sense of navigation (导航) because of their language. I think it does. Where we (English speakers) use left and right, forward and back, speakers of this language use north, south, east and west. To do this, they must know where north is at all times. They orient (确定方位)themselves more skillfully than we do.
To learn another language is not just to get by a bit more easily when you go on holiday. It’s to learn to perceive the world differently, to think differently, and even to be someone different. And that, in turn, throws light on your native language, your culture and yourself.
41. What can we know about the author?
A. He had a clear career plan. B. He is a language enthusiast.
C. He dislikes living in different cities. D. He struggled to achieve his college degree.
42. What does the underlined phrase “take exception to” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Try out. B. Hit upon. C. Put forward. D. Disapprove of.
43. Why does the author mention different historical figures in paragraph 3?
A. To compare their views on language. B. To honor their contributions.
C. To support his argument. D. To explain a new insight.
44. What does the author try to explain about language in paragraph 4?
A. Its guiding role in our life. B. Its development throughout history.
C. Its importance in social interaction. D. Its impact on our cultural identities.
45. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Language Is Key to Learning B. Language Shapes Our Reality
C. Environments Affect Our World View D. Cultures Promote Emotional Expression
【答案】41. B 42. D 43. C 44. A 45. B
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。主要介绍了学习语言的重要性,它塑造了我们看待世界的方式,影响了我们的思维方式和世界观。
【41题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段中“I was one of those children who enjoyed counting to ten in different languages while I brushed my teeth. When I went to university, I chose to major in French and Spanish.(我是那种喜欢一边刷牙一边用不同的语言从一数到十的孩子。当我上大学时,我选择了法语和西班牙语专业)”可知,作者从小就喜欢用不同语言数数,大学还选择了法语和西班牙语专业,这表明他是一个语言爱好者。故选B项。
【42题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线单词后文“It depresses me to hear people say that AI will make language learning pointless. To me, language is not just something to be used.(听到有人说人工智能会让语言学习变得毫无意义,我感到很沮丧。对我来说,语言不仅仅是用来使用的)”可知,作者不认同语言只是一种“工具”这种观点,所以“take exception to”意思是“不赞成;反对”,与D选项“Disapprove of.( 不赞成)”意思相近。故选D项。
【43题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段作者提出“To me, language is not just something to be used. It shapes the way we perceive and experience the world.(对我来说,语言不仅仅是被使用的东西,它塑造了我们感知和体验世界的方式)”以及第三段提到 Edward Sapir、Benjamin Lee Whorf以及Johann Georg Hamann等历史人物,他们的观点都表明语言与思维方式和世界观有关,这是在支持作者的观点。故选C项。
【44题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“Where we (English speakers) use left and right, forward and back, speakers of this language use north, south, east and west. To do this, they must know where north is at all times. They orient (确定方位) themselves more skillfully than we do.(我们(说英语的人)用“左”和“右”、“前”和“后”,而说英语的人用“北”、“南”、“东”和“西”。要做到这一点,它们必须时刻知道北方在哪里。他们比我们更有技巧地定位自己)”可知,澳大利亚本土语言Guugu Yimithirr的使用者因为语言的原因,在导航方面比说英语的人更有优势,这说明语言在生活中起到了指导作用,即语言对我们的生活有引导作用。故选A项。
C
The question, “What do elephants and fish have in common?” may sound strange but researchers have found that they both have a feature not observed in any other creature.
A team at Georgia Institute of Technology has discovered that elephants use a special form of air suction (吸力) in their trunks to pick up food and handle delicate objects. Animals using suction to handle objects are typically found in water. Many fish perform suction feeding that requires specialised body parts to quickly generate air pressure that can draw nearby food into their mouths.
The researchers have found that an elephant could do the same thanks to its huge nostrils (鼻孔) and lung capacity. The radius (半径) of an elephant’s nostrils can increase by up to 30%, and the volume of air that it can push through its trunk increases by 64%. This allows it to take in air at 30 times the speed of a human sneeze, enabling it to drink 3L of water a second.
In an experiment at Atlanta zoo, the researchers looked at how an elephant would pick up a small crispy (酥脆的) pancake, which was only 0.5 mm thick. The force required to break the pancake was less than 1% of the trunk’s weight (about 100kg). The elephant was found to either use suction at a fixed distance from the pancake to “raise” the object in the air and hold it, or gently press the tip of its trunk against the pancake and apply suction to pick it up. At no time during the experiment did the elephant break the pancake.
The researchers believe that the findings could help technology companies develop better machines that use air to do their jobs, as suction has long been used in robotics to grab objects. The fascinating part of the study for robotics is that elephants can use air suction both on ground and in water. The researchers are so impressed that they suggest the elephant’s suction technique could help improve robotics technology.
Nature never ceases to surprise. Indeed, it is thought that over four-fifths of living species on earth remain undiscovered. That is a reminder of how little we know of our planet, and that we are not the only creatures with hidden complexities.

Social media is one of the fastest-growing industries in today’s world. Your friends’ lives may look more exciting than yours on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, but new research shows it is because they are faking (伪造) it.
A recent survey has found around two-thirds of people on social media post images to their personal information to make their lives seem more adventurous. And more than three quarters of those asked said they judged their peers based on what they saw on their Instagram, Snapchat or Facebook pages.
The British survey, by smart phone maker HTC, found that, in order to make our own pages and lives appear more exciting, six percent also said they had borrowed items to include in the images in order to pass them off as their own. More than half of those surveyed said they posted images of items and places purely to show off, causing jealousy among friends and family.
Behavioral psychologist Hemmings said the trend was unsurprising due to the rise of social media. “We’re living in a world of instant communication.” she said. “Fashion and style used to live and die in magazines; now people are in search of authentic, peer-to-peer recommendations as well, making social media an equal power house to magazines and newspapers.”
“With images being shared in an instant, we desire to know what our friends are wearing, or what super stars are buying, as soon as they have got them.” Such is the influence of social media sites like Instagram, 76 percent of those asked also said seeing items on social media influences them to buy them, with men more likely to take style advice and buy what they see.
51. How did most of the people judge their friends according to the survey?
A. By seeing their real lives.
B. By faking their posts on social media.
C. By asking their neighbours.
D. By seeing their posts on social media.
52. How do some people make their lives appear more exciting?
A. By buying pictures. B. By posting images.
C. By making up stories. D. By risking their lives.
53. What does the underlined word “jealousy” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Adventure. B. Conflict. C. Envy. D. Misunderstanding.
54. What can we learn from Hemmings?
A. The trend reflects the development of social media.
B. Fashion and style no longer exist in magazines.
C. Magazines and newspapers are less important.
D. The trend is beyond people’s expectation.
55. Which of the following best describes social media like Instagram?
A. Positive. B. Creative. C. Persuasive. D. Honest.
【答案】51. D 52. B 53. C 54. A 55. C

五、阅读表达:
There is a wide and deep choice of a career. Whether he’s a hand in construction or sitting behind the desk working on a computer, everyone has some ideas of what is an attractive career. However, making a career choice is not simply a matter of following a dream; for most people it means a lot of research and soul searching. It even requires working in some jobs where you find it isn’t for you. This can only help you focus on the right career. So there is no doubt that choosing the right career becomes one of the most important decisions of an individual’s life.
It used to be that one followed in the footsteps of their father or grandfather or took over the family business when it came to making a career choice. These days, a career path can start anywhere and then veer off into something totally different.
Career choices must be realistic and well thought out. It is not uncommon for people to start a career path and realize that they have made a terrible mistake, feeling as if it may be too late to turn around. Not only does a career choice concern your strongest skills and interest, it is also something that you will be doing continuously to bring in income. This is why a career choice can be such a personal decision. Formerly it used to be unusual for someone to change occupations or careers more than once or twice in a lifetime; it is now even more unusual to keep the same career during someone’s working life.
There are a great many resources in helping one choose the right profession. A number of websites offering tools such as career tests and information, educational resources, resume services and the kind can be found. While it is important to research one vocation and career, in this dynamic and changing economy and market place, keeping options open for several related career choices, or even self-employment, is more than intelligent.
