【原创题】A daughter complained to her father about her life and how things were so hard for her. She didn’t know if she was going to make it and wanted to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling(奋斗). It seemed that as one problem was solved, a new one appeared.
Her father, who is a good cook, took her to the kitchen. He filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Soon the pots came to a boil. In the first one he placed carrots, in the second he placed eggs, and in the last he placed coffee beans(咖啡豆). He let them boil, without saying a word.

The daughter waited impatiently, wondering what he was doing. In about twenty minutes, he turned off the burners and put the carrots, the eggs and the coffee into different bowls. He asked, “Darling, what do you see?”“Carrots, eggs and coffee,” she replied.
He brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She noticed that they were soft. He then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed(观察) the hard-boiled egg. Finally, he asked her to taste the coffee. She enjoyed it and smiled.

“What does it mean, Father?” she asked.
He explained that each of them had faced the same situation, boiling water, but each reacted(反应) differently. The strong and hard carrots became soft and weak after being boiled. The fragile eggs became hard after cooking. Coffee beans were the most special of the three. They turned the water into delicious coffee. “Which are you?” he asked his daughter.
When difficulties knock on your door, how do you answer? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?

Do you like blueberries? If so, the next time you’re about to eat your fill of these delicious berries, take a good look at them. Then ask yourself: Are blueberries really blue?

For the most part, blueberries aren’t blue. If you carefully peel the skin off one, you’ll see that the fruit inside is white. If you rub(摩擦) the inside of the skin on a white piece of paper, you’ll see a reddish-purple color. And if you gently rub off the outer layer of wax(蜡质层), the blue color disappears and the berry looks completely black. But the moment you pick one, it does look blue. What’s going on?

Well, there are two ways to create colors in nature. The first is through pigments(色素). Pigments show the color of the light they don’t take in. For example, the most common pigment in plants is chlorophyll(叶绿素), a pigment taking in blue and red light but reflecting(反射) green light. However, there aren’t any “true blue” pigments in the blueberries.
The second way to make color is through “structural color”. Blueberries create “structural color” in their own way. The berries look black when they’re ripe(成熟的), but they build a thin, clear layer of wax on their outside. This layer is only four thousandths of a centimeter thick, but it gives the berries their blue look.

This blue color is more than just a pretty sight. It’s also beneficial to the plants. The rare blue color attracts birds. When birds eat the blueberries, they help spread the seeds far and wide, which helps the plants grow. Also, the blue color can keep the berries safe from the strong sunlight, making sure the seeds inside are healthy and can grow into new blueberry plants later.
Now your bowl of blueberries suddenly looks a lot more interesting. The fruit is beautiful, but its beauty is only skin deep!
