A
In recent years wooden buildings have reached new heights, with rocketing timber skyscrapers completed or underway in countries like Norway, Switzerland and Australia. Now, real estate developer Atrium Ljungberg has announced plans to build the world’s largest “wooden city”, which will be constructed in Sweden’s capital, Stockholm, from 2025.
Stockholm Wood City will feature 7,000 office spaces and 2,000 homes in the city’s southeast, and will offer “a dynamic, urban environment with a mixture of workplaces, housing, restaurants and shops”, according to a press release. Set across 250,000 square meters, it has been described by its developer as “the world’s largest known construction project in wood”. Timber has been championed as a sustainable alternative to concrete and steel, with expensive new construction projects using wood besides single-family homes and office buildings.
However, a mixed-use development of such size would be “a historic milestone for Swedish innovation capability”, said Annica Anas, CEO of Atrium Ljungberg.
Although some experts have raised concerns over fire risks posed by wooden buildings, advocates argue that engineered timber burns at a relatively slow and predictable rate, making it safer than many conventional steel structures. Timber is also a “carbon sink”, which means that carbon dioxide removed from the air by trees is stored in the material rather than being returned to the atmosphere. Wooden buildings have been found to enjoy better indoor air quality and can be constructed with significantly lower carbon emissions than those made with conventional materials.
The construction will not be as noisy as it is built from concrete and bricks, adds Ms Anas. This makes wooden buildings particularly suitable for urban redevelopment in general, since putting them up is less likely to annoy the neighbours. It should also be profitable.
The wooden city is supposed to make commute easier and shorter. The website for the project describes Stockholm Wood City as a “five-minute city”, meaning that anywhere one would need to go would only be a five-minute walk. The first buildings in Stockholm Wood City are set to be completed in 2027.
31. What is Annica Anas’s attitude towards the “wooden city” developed in Stockholm?
A. Critical. B. Doubtful.
C. Appreciative D. Dismissive.
32. What is the advantage of wooden buildings over concrete and steel ones?
A. They are much greener.
B. They are built on a more solid base.
C. They are more comfortable to live in.
D. They are much stronger to resist heat.
33. Why are wooden buildings more appropriate for urban redevelopment?
A. They are to the taste of all neighbours.
B. Less noise is produced in construction.
C. They can be built more quickly than other buildings.
D. They can bring more profits to the developers.
34. What will the future life in the wooden city be probably like?
A. It’s secure. B. It’s care-free.
C. It’s unbearable. D. It’s convenient.
B
Growing up, my older brother, a science enthusiast, shared fascinating facts with me, like how our cells are completely new every seven years. This idea highlighted the concept of constant change in our selves, meaning I'm a physically different person from the one I was years ago.
Today, I often wonder: Am I a story that's constantly being written? people have debated this for a long time, with ancient Greeks arguing whether a thing's true essence lies in its unchanging nature or its ongoing development.
Plato believed that natural science focuses on the changing physical world, while philosophy, using intelligence and reason, explored the change less eternal (永恒). For instance, veterinary science studies growing dogs, but philosophers question the idea of “Dog” itself.
Aristotle agreed that science explains what we see but argued that the material universe is in constant change. He believed change is part of the true nature of things and your virtue is about who you're turning into, not a fixed identity. As such, becoming was his focus, rather than some perfect invisible being.
So, which is your view, and how does that guide the way you live? None of this is to say the choice between Platonism and Aristotelianism is absolute. We all have some unchanging characteristics, and we also change in many ways. The philosophical perspective you adopt will depend on how you principally define yourself and what you choose to pay attention to as you move through the world.
Are you more like a Platonist or an Aristotelian? It depends on whether you see yourself as having a fixed identity or a changing story. Today’s culture often pushes you to be a Platonist, defining yourself as a certain type of person. This can make you a repeat customer and give you a sense of belonging. But it might also keep you in situations you don't like. Being more like an Aristotelian can set you free.
35. What did the author tell us about our cells in Paragraph 1?
A. The unchanging nature of our souls.
B. The ongoing transformation of our bodies.
C. The belief that our science and nature do not change.
D. The idea that we are the same person through our lives.
36. According to Aristotle, what is the focus of understanding a dog?
A. Its unchanging nature. B. Its determined essence.
C. Its stable identity. D. Its continuous development.
37. How does modem culture tend to influence personal identity, according to the text?
A. By pushing people to de fin c themselves into fix cd identities.
B. By suggesting that personal identity will be a mystery forever.
C. By encouraging individuals to accept constant change and growth.
D. By promoting that individual identity is deter min cd by belongings.
38. Which of the following could be the most suitable title for the passage?
A. Plate v. s. Aristotle: the Battle of Ideas.
B. The Philosophical Outlook: A Defined Personality.
C Becoming v. s. Being: Viewpoint on Personal Identity.
D. The Unchanging Universe: A Philosophical Dilemma.
C
Yesterday, at the National Trust’s Purbeck Heaths nature reserve, four beavers were released from crates and crawled into Little Sea, a 33-hectare (81-acre) lake — the first to be legally released in England after a 400-year absence and a fight to return them to the landscape.
The trust says this is the perfect habitat for them to roam free, with no fenced enclosures, full of lakes and watercourses for the beavers (海狸) to make their home. The trust has permission to release 25 on the peninsula (半岛) but is starting with four and then making more releases in coming years if this one goes well.
Until about 20 years ago the rodent (啮齿动物) had been extinct in Britain for four centuries, having been hunted for its fur, meat and scent oil. But in recent years, beavers have been returning to our waterways via licensed releases into enclosures and some illegal releases. There are an estimated 500 in the wild in England. Last week, the government announced that, with a license, it is now legal for conservationists (自然保护主义者) to release beavers into the wild, with no enclosures necessary. “The problem with enclosures is they are only really a short-term solution, as after a couple of years the beavers have need to make their own territories, and there’s no space for them to go.” said David Brown, the National Trust’s nature director at Purbeck.
Conservationists have been campaigning for the return of the beaver for decades because it is a keystone species, whose presence allows other creatures to thrive. This is because beavers create complex wetland habitats by digging channels and pools and constructing leaky dams. Their dams also filter pollution, helping to clean up rivers, and can prevent flooding as well as drought.
The trust has worked with local farmers and landowners to ensure the beavers do not cause unwanted disruption. Purbeck hopes it will spur year-round nature tourism as people come to see the beavers and the habitat they create. “We have been seeing a shift away from bucket-and-spade tourism to nature tourism, and that is more sustainable,” Brown said.
The nature minister, Mary Creagh, was there to watch the release. She said: “I am thrilled that, after being hunted to extinction centuries ago, wild beavers are finally here to stay. Today is an important milestone for national nature recovery.”
39. What is the current plan for releasing beavers in the Purbeck Heaths nature reserve?
A. To release all 25 beavers at once.
B. To start with four beavers and release more in the future if successful.
C. To release beavers only into fenced enclosures.
D. To release beavers without any legal permission.
40. Why are enclosures considered a short-term solution for beavers?
A. Because beavers need to create their own territories and enclosures limit their space.
B. Because enclosures are too expensive to maintain.
C. Because beavers do not survive well in enclosures.
D. Because enclosures are illegal in England.
41. What aspect of the beavers do conservationists highlight?
A. Their popularity among tourists.
B. Their capability of constructing dams.
C. Their adaptability to the environment.
D. Their impact on the ecosystem.
42. What is the overall attitude of the National Trust and the nature minister towards the release of beavers?
A. They are indifferent and see it as a minor event.
B. They are concerned about the potential disruption to local farmers.
C. They are enthusiastic and view it as a significant step for nature recovery and sustainable tourism.
D. They are skeptical about the long-term success of the beaver release.

Gloria Scott decided it was time to call an electrician in early August after she turned on a light switch in her kitchen and suddenly a flash of light flew overhead. Obviously, the lights need repairing.
Electrician John Kinney fixed the problem and got her lights working again. But when he returned to his own home that weekend, he couldn’t stop thinking about Scott, 72, living with her dog in her shabby house in Woburn, Mass.
“She reminded me of my grandma, who passed away 10 years ago,” said Kinney, 37, who runs Kinney Electric. “Her wiring was in bad shape and I really worried about her safety.”
The following Monday, Kinney returned to Scott’s home with an extra offer. While organizing things inside her house, he noticed that she had no hot water coming out of her faucets (水龙头). He also discovered that her kitchen sink was broken and the ceilings were full of holes...
It was then that Kinney decided to start a Facebook page called “A Nice Old Lady Needs Help” and raise funds to do all of the repairs. To his surprise, it went viral. In less than a month, nearly $115,000 was raised and the campaign now has a new name: “Gloria’s Gladiators.”
“We were hoping to inspire others and that’s exactly what is happening,” said Kinney, noting that the Gloria’s Gladiators group now has more than 15,000 members — many of whom were inspired by Scott’s story to begin doing free home repairs in their own neighborhoods.
Scott felt so thankful for Kinney and other volunteers’ help that she was speechless.
Kinney said he’s thankful for the opportunity to repair Scott’s home, and there is something else that has also brought him joy.
“We’ve opened up Gloria’s world,” he said. “Now, I hope we can do the same for all of the other Glorias out there. Nobody should have to go through life alone.”
47. Why did Scott decide to call an electrician?

51. Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
Sweetness: The Silent Killer in Disguise
Imagine starting your day with a flavored yogurt, sipping soda at lunch, and ending with a “healthy” granola bar. You’d be shocked to learn these daily choices may contain over 50g of added sugar — far exceeding the WHO’s recommended 25g limit. This unconscious intake is just the first step toward a chain of health risks, as excessive sugar disrupts our bodies in ways we often ignore.
Sugar’s most immediate threat lies in its metabolic disruption. When consumed in excess, fructose (果糖) overloads the liver, converting into fat and triggering insulin (胰岛素) resistance. This process not only raises blood sugar levels but also lays the groundwork for type 2 diabetes, as confirmed by Harvard research linking high-sugar diets to a 26% higher diabetes risk.
Beyond metabolism, sugar wages war on the heart. A study in JAMA Internal Medicine revealed that adults consuming 25% of calories from sugar faced three times the risk of heart-related death. Sugar irritates blood vessels, raises “bad” cholesterol (LDL), and speeds up artery hardening. Research from the University of California shows that drinking just one sugary drink daily increases heart disease risk by 20%.
New research shows how sugar harms the brain. UCLA studies found that diets high in sugar make the hippocampus smaller, which weakens memory and learning. Sugar addiction works like drug addiction, causing strong sugar cravings that take over clear thinking. A 2025 Neuroscience study found that sugar consumption potentially causes memory problems, restlessness and shorter attention spans.
Breaking free requires mindful choices: check labels for hidden sugars, replace sodas with flavored water, and enjoy fruits’ natural sweetness. Simple changes, such as picking dark chocolate over candy, can help. Every spoonful of sugar is a decision — choose wisely for your health’s future.

In recent years, wooden buildings have reached new heights, with rocketing timber skyscrapers completed or underway in countries like Norway, Switzerland and Australia.
C 32. A 33. B 34. D
根据文章第三段“However, a mixed-use development of such size would be “a historic milestone for Swedish innovation capability”, said Annica Anas, CEO of Atrium Ljungberg. (然而,Atrium Ljungberg的首席执行官安妮卡·阿纳斯(Annica Anas)表示,如此规模的混合用途开发项目将是“瑞典创新能力的历史性里程碑”。)”可知,首席执行官将这一项目称为“历史性里程碑”,这是极高的评价,表明她对此持赞赏态度。故选C项。
【32题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第四段第二、三句“Timber is also a “carbon sink”, which means that carbon dioxide removed from the air by trees is stored in the material rather than being returned to the atmosphere. Wooden buildings have been found to enjoy better indoor air quality and can be constructed with significantly lower carbon emissions than those made with conventional materials. (木材也是一种“碳汇”,这意味着树木从空气中吸收的二氧化碳储存在材料中,而不是返回到大气中。研究发现,木结构建筑的室内空气质量更好,并且与传统材料建造的建筑相比,其施工过程中的碳排放量要低得多。)”可知,木结构建筑在固碳、改善室内空气质量和降低碳排放方面都优于传统建筑,这些都体现了其更环保的特点。故选A项。
根据文章第五段前两句“The construction will not be as noisy as it is built from concrete and bricks, adds Ms Anas. This makes wooden buildings particularly suitable for urban redevelopment in general, since putting them up is less likely to annoy the neighbours. (阿纳斯(Anas)女士补充说,这种建筑的噪音不像用混凝土和砖块建造那么大。这使得木结构建筑总体上特别适合城市再开发,因为建造它们不太可能打扰邻居。)”可知,木结构建筑更适合城市再开发的原因是施工过程中产生的噪音较小。故选B项。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段第二句“The website for the project describes Stockholm Wood City as a “five-minute city”, meaning that anywhere one would need to go would only be a five-minute walk. (该项目网站将斯德哥尔摩木城描述为一个“五分钟城市”,这意味着人们需要去的任何地方都只需步行五分钟。)”可知,未来的木城去各个地方都在步行五分钟范围内,表明未来的生活将非常便捷。故选D项。
C. Becoming v. s. Being: Viewpoint on Personal Identity.
D. The Unchanging Universe: A Philosophical Dilemma.
B 36. D 37. A 38. C
根据第一段“Growing up, my older brother, a science enthusiast, shared fascinating facts with me, like how our cells are completely new every seven years. This idea highlighted the concept of constant change in our selves, meaning I'm a physically different person from the one I was years ago. (在成长过程中,我的哥哥是一个科学爱好者,他和我分享了一些有趣的事实,比如我们的细胞每七年就会更新一次。这个想法强调了我们自我不断变化的概念,这意味着我的身体与几年前的我不同。) ”可知,作者提到细胞每七年完全更新一次,强调了我们自身的不断变化,故推断作者想告诉的是我们身体在持续转变。故选B。
【36题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Aristotle agreed that science explains what we see but argued that the material universe is in constant change. He believed change is part of the true nature of things and your virtue is about who you're turning into, not a fixed identity. As such, becoming was his focus, rather than some perfect invisible being.
根据最后一段“Are you more like a Platonist or an Aristotelian? It depends on whether you see yourself as having a fixed identity or a changing story. Today's culture often pushes you to be a Platonist, defining yourself as a certain type of person. (你是柏拉图主义者还是亚里士多德主义者?这取决于你认为自己是一个固定的身份还是一个不断变化的故事。今天的文化常常促使你成为柏拉图主义者,把自己定义为某种类型的人。) ”可知,现代文化常常促使人们成为柏拉图主义者,将自己定义为某种类型的人,也就是把自己定义为固定的身份。故选A。
Until about 20 years ago, the rodent (啮齿动物) had been extinct in Britain for four centuries, having been hunted for its fur, meat and scent oil.

________________________________________________________________________________________
48. Whom did Scott remind Kinney of?
________________________________________________________________________________________
49. How do you understand the underlined part “it went viral” in Paragraph 5?
________________________________________________________________________________________
50. When you meet poor and lonely people, what will you do? Please share.
________________________________________________________________________________________
47. Her lights broke down/Her lights needed repairing.
48. His grandma.
49. It spread widely online.
50. I will offer help and spread warmth to them.
根据第一段“Gloria Scott decided it was time to call an electrician in early August after she turned on a light switch in her kitchen and suddenly a flash of light flew overhead. Obviously, the lights need repairing.(8月初,Gloria Scott打开厨房的电灯开关,突然一道光从头顶闪过,她觉得该叫电工了。显然,这些灯需要修理了)”可知,Scott家的灯出了故障需要维修,所以她决定打电话叫电工。故答案为:Her lights broke down/Her lights needed repairing.
根据第三段中““She reminded me of my grandma, who passed away 10 years ago,” said Kinney, 37, who runs Kinney Electric.(“她让我想起了我十年前的奶奶,”37岁的Kinney说道,他经营着Kinney电气公司)”可知,Scott让Kinney想起了他的奶奶。 His grandma.
根据划线短语后“In less than a month, nearly $115,000 was raised and the campaign now has a new name: “Gloria’s Gladiators.”(不到一个月的时间,就筹集了近11.5万美元,这个活动现在有了一个新名字:“Gloria的角斗士”)”可知,Kinney创建的筹款页面才在短时间内筹得大量捐款,说明它传播很广。 It spread widely online.
I will offer help and spread warmth to them.

Hidden sugars in daily food exceed health limits, posing severe health risks. It disrupts metabolism, increasing diabetes risk through insulin resistance. Sugar also dramatically increases heart disease risk by damaging blood vessels and raising cholesterol. Furthermore, it harms brain function, weakening cognitive capacity by shrinking hippocampus and causing addiction. Mindful dietary choices are essential to reduce sugar intake.

One possible version:
Dear Jim,
Hi Jim! It’s lovely to hear from you. I’m more than happy to tell you about my favorite handcraft course at school.
The handcraft I love most is Chinese paper-cutting. We usually use red paper, scissors, and carving knives to make works. First, we fold the paper into different shapes, then draw patterns like flowers, animals or Chinese characters on it, and finally cut along the lines carefully. It takes patience but the finished works are so beautiful. Paper-cutting is more than just a craft — it carries rich Chinese cultural meanings. For centuries, people have put red paper-cuts on windows or doors during festivals, especially the Spring Festival, to wish for good luck and happiness.
I really enjoy it because it calms my mind and connects me to our culture. I hope you can try it one day!
Best wishes,
Li Hua
