With more than 30 years of tireless effort, China finally made history in an international chess competition this year.
On April 30, Ding Liren took the crown of the World Chess Championship (锦标赛). He beat the Russian player Ian Nepomniachtchi when the Russian made a serious mistake in the final match. Ding became the new world chess champion and also the first Chinese male (男子) player to win the title. His victory means that China now holds both the men’s and women’s world titles in chess. Born in Wenzhou, the “chess city” of China, Ding began learning to play chess when he was little. At the age of five, he won his first national title. When he was seventeen, he beat several experienced masters to win the chess championship of China.

Although he has long been a big star in the chess world, he is humble (谦逊的). He learns from his mistakes and is always ready to talk about his problems. 中考模拟真题练习
After that, we went on down the river. It was very dark that night and it wasn’t easy to see where we were going. Suddenly, a big steamboat came at us very fast, and the next minute it was right over us. Jim and I jumped off the raft into the water. The boat hit the raft and went on up the river.
When I came up out of the water, I couldn’t see Jim anywhere. I called out his name again and again, but there was no answer. “He’s dead!” I thought. Slowly, I swam to the side of the river and got out. I saw that I was near a big old wooden house. Suddenly a lot of very angry dogs jumped out at me. They made a terrible noise and someone called from the house, “Who’s there?”
“George Jackson,” I answered quickly. “I’ve fallen off a river boat.”
Well, the people who lived in that house were very kind, and they took me in and gave me some new clothes and a good meal. I told them that my family were all dead, so they said I could stay with them as long as I wanted. It was a beautiful house and the food was good there, so I stayed.
A few days later, one of the slaves in the house came to me and said, “Come with me!” Together, we went down to some trees by the river. “In there!” he said and went away.
On the ground, I found a man asleep. It was Jim! I was really pleased to see him. When the steamboat hit the raft, Jim told me, the raft didn’t crash. Jim swam after it and caught it. Then he began to look for me.
We decided to leave at once. It’s all right to live in a house for a little while, but you feel freer and easier and more comfortable on a raft.

Many people think heirlooms (传家宝) are expensive things. However, Sara doesn’t think so. She has a few heirlooms that anyone can buy in a shop. However, they are special to her because they belonged to her grandmother.
After Sara’s grandmother died, her family chose something of hers to keep to remember her. As Sara lived far away, her mother picked things out for her—a tablecloth, a mirror, and an old pot. Sara kept these things, but she didn’t use them much. The tablecloth was too big for her tables, the pot was too small and old, and Sara didn’t like the color of the mirror frame (镜框) .
Sara’s life changed when she read something in a book: Don’t keep anything in your house that you don’t find useful or beautiful. That’s right. “But what about sentimental (情感的) things like heirlooms? They’re beautiful if they remind us of good times with loved ones.” Sara thought.
Sara decided to give these things a fresh start. She painted the mirror frame a different color to go with her daughter’s room. Although Sara’s daughter never met her grandmother, they share a connection through the mirror. Sara bought a table for her grandmother’s tablecloth. She also started using her grandmother’s pot. Whenever she cooks with it, Sara thinks of her grandmother making bread long ago. These things, once forgotten, are useful again, bringing together old memories and new stories.

My family had a long-running cycle of growing up poor. Both my mom and dad came from large families with little more than the clothes on their backs. Their parents had also grown up with very little.
When I was five, I showed an interest in machinery. By Grade 3, I was learning to program using the BASIC language. Then, one day in high school, my computer science teacher suggested I attend a computer camp. He gave me a brochure (小册子) and I excitedly took it home. That excitement quickly disappeared as my mom saw the price of the camp: several hundred dollars. That evening, I went into my room and cried my eyes out.
But a few weeks later, I got a phone call. It was the head of the computer camp telling me I was admitted to the camp. I could hardly believe my ears. At that camp, I met many like-minded kids and learned how to build websites. It lit a fire in me.
Ten years later, I received another call from the camp director. “I’ve found something I think you’ll want to see,” he said, suggesting we meet. When we did, he pulled out a long handwritten letter my mom had sent when I was 15. She wrote that I was a smart kid. She talked a lot about my early love for machinery and computers. She ended by saying she couldn’t afford the cost of the computer camp and hoped in her heart that they would still accept me. I broke down crying at once.
Over the years, I continued to learn as much as I could. In 2014, I finally landed a job where I could use all my skills. Now, I’m proud to say that I’ve broken my family’s cycle of living poorly.
And all I want to do now is to sit down with my mom and thank her for everything she has done for me. Without her, I would never have the bright life I have today.

During a school picnic, Tom Sawyer and his friend Becky Thatcher explored a large cave near their town. They walked and played happily, looking at the strange shapes on the walls. They didn’t notice how far they had gone. Soon, they were alone in the dark, silent tunnels. Becky started to worry. “Tom, I think we are lost!” she cried.

But after many turns, they still saw no exit. Their last candle burned out. They were now in complete darkness. Becky was very frightened and cried. Tom held her hand tightly.
They were tired and hungry. The only food they had was a small piece of cake, which they shared. Tom knew they must keep moving. He told Becky to wait while he explored with the string. In another tunnel, he saw a tiny light far away. He ran back to Becky, shouting, “We are saved! I saw daylight!”
Tom led Becky towards the light. It was a small hole in the cave wall. They climbed out and found themselves near the river. Some men from the town were searching for them. They were safe at last. Most of the time, John was a very nice boy. He should have been completely well-behaved. But he wasn’t. He had one bad habit: he was a pig about candy. Boiled candy, cotton candy… And, above all, chocolates—he ate them all. All his money went on candy, and all his candy went to himself.

“Chocolate all the time,” John replied. “Chocolate!”
“I think I understand,” His father broke in suddenly. “Very well.” He took a deep breath and went on. “John,” he said, “if you can’t understand what kind of diet is really best for you, can’t you at least get it into your head that you make your mother very unhappy when you eat so much candy that you can’t eat anything else?”
John didn’t want to answer and ran out. Later, he found a tiny piece of chocolate in gold paper in his garden. He ate it without thinking. But after that, his world began to change in a strange way. Hua Luogeng was born in 1910 in Jiangsu Province. His family was poor — his father was a farmer, and his mother did housework. When Hua was 15, he had to drop out of school because his family couldn’t afford the tuition (学费). But he didn’t stop learning math — he borrowed books from friends and studied on his own.
One day, Hua found a mistake in a math book. He wrote a letter to the author, explaining the mistake clearly. Hoping to find Mr. Wallace, Meg, her brother Charles and her classmate Calvin reached the dark planet Camz. But right after their arrival, something bad happened. “This isn’t the real Charles,” Meg cried out.
“On Camz, we’re all happy because we’re the same. Differences cause trouble—you’re unhappy at school just for being different,” Charles said coldly.
“Maybe I don’t like being different,” Meg said, “but I don’t want to be like everybody else, either.”
“Charles is under IT’s control,” Calvin said in a low voice.
The word “IT” made Meg shake. “What is IT?” she managed to say, hiding her fear.
“IT is the boss of this perfect planet— no pain, no differences,” Charles answered. Then he added, “This is the best choice for you— no more trouble, just happiness.”
“No!” Meg shouted. “I know our world isn’t perfect, but it’s better than this. This isn’t the best choice!”
“Nobody suffers here,” Charles said without feeling.
“But nobody is happy, either. You can’t know happiness without sadness,” Meg said seriously.

At the table, Dad and Walter talked like two grown men, which made Walter feel relaxed. Later, Cal, our housekeeper, brought syrup (糖浆). Walter poured lots of it on his vegetables and meat.
“What are you doing?” I cried out before I could stop myself.

In 1959, on a sunny Saturday outside Homestead, Florida, something special started. Robert Moehling’s father was a poor farmer. He could not afford boxes for his harvest, so he put his extra cucumbers by the road. His six-year-old son, Robert, waited there all day. But cars speeding past did not see him. To get people’s attention, Robert’s father painted a message on a piece of wood and put it next to the cucumbers. It said, “Robert Is Here.”
More than 60 years later, that message is still true. But the small start has now grown into a famous fruit stand, like a Disney World for tropical (热带的) fruits. The store, called “Robert Is Here,” is located just off the main road US 1. It sells fruits and vegetables, souvenirs, has a small zoo for children to touch animals, a picnic area, and music on weekends. It is now a well-known stop for people driving on the highway.
Robert still works at the store today. He grows many of the fruits he sells on his farm. When he runs out of his own fruit, he sells produce (农产品) from other local farmers. His store sells special tropical fruits that people don’t often see, like egg fruit and dragon fruit. There are signs all around the store with funny notes about each fruit.

“An Mingzhong, a 12-year-old boy from Sichuan, used to be lazy. In his own words, he rarely did any housework. But now, things have changed. Washing the dishes, cooking and making the bed...all of these tasks have become part of his daily life.
This big change is the result of a new program at his school. Starting from last term, Dazhou No. 1 Middle School has made housework part of its students’ homework to improve their life skills. Hoping to find Mr. Wallace, Meg, her brother Charles and her classmate Calvin reached the dark planet Camz. But right after their arrival, something bad happened. Charles, once cheerful and warm, was controlled by a red-eyed man, IT. He had the same face as Charles, but his eyes were cold and lifeless.
Meg stepped closer, in a soft but firm (坚定) voice, “Charles, this ‘perfection’ isn’t real. Being real matters more than being the same. Sometimes we feel sad, we stay true to who we are, and we laugh when we’re happy... that’s what makes us. You used to love talking about stars and asking silly questions—remember? That’s the real you.”

I am Scout. I was mad at school today. Miss Caroline shamed Walter in front of the class for not bringing lunch money. I knew he couldn’t afford it, so when I met him on my way home, I asked him to come to my house for dinner.
At the table, Dad and Walter talked like two grown men, which made Walter feel relaxed. Later, Cal, our housekeeper, brought syrup (糖浆). Walter poured lots of it on his vegetables and meat.
“What are you doing?” I cried out before I could stop myself.
The room went silent. Walter froze, with his head down and his face turning red. Dad shook his head and gave me a sharp look.
“But he’s poured the syrup all over...”
Just then, Cal called me to the kitchen, her face tight (紧绷) with anger. “Some people eat differently, Scout, but you shouldn’t judge them at the table! That boy’s your guest.”
“But it wasn’t polite,” I said quietly,
“Anyone in this house should be treated with respect. If you can’t behave, eat here in the kitchen!” said Cal. I finished dinner alone, thankful that I didn’t have to face them again.
At night, with tears still in my eyes, I went to Dad. Bit by bit, I told him the day’s troubles. He listened quietly, and then said, “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view. If you can learn this, Scout, you’ll get along much better with people.”

On a cold, windy night with light rain, a policeman in the street, was checking closed doors to keep it safe. Near a dark shop, he saw Bob.
“Officer, I’m waiting for a friend,” Bob explained quickly. “Twenty years ago tonight, my best friend Jimmy Wells and I ate at ‘Big Joe’ Brady’s restaurant here. I was 18, leaving for the West to make a good life; Jimmy was 20, refusing to leave New York—he said it’s the only great place on earth. We promised to meet here tonight!”
The policeman nodded, “That restaurant closed five years ago.”
Bob pulled out a shiny watch, “Three minutes to ten—we said goodbye at ten. We wrote for a year or two, then lost touch, but Jimmy’s honest—he’ll come!”
“I hope so,” the policeman said and left.
Bob waited 20 minutes, then a tall man hurried over.
“Is that you, Bob?”
“Jimmy! It’s really you!” Bob cried.
They walked arm in arm, but under a bright shop light, Bob stepped back suddenly. “You’re not Jimmy! A man’s nose can’t change that much!”
The tall man said, “You’re under arrest (逮捕)—wanted by Chicago police.” He handed Bob a note. Bob’s hand shook as he read, Bob, I arrived on time and recognized (认出) you. I couldn’t bear to arrest my old friend myself, so I asked another policeman to do it. —Jimmy.”
