Lesson Plan 2: Reading
Textbook Reference: 7B Unit 7, Pages 82-83
I. Teaching Objectives
Language Ability: Understand the main content and structure of Simon’s diary about a cycling trip; master key words and phrases; analyze the time sequence and writing features of the diary.
Cultural Awareness: Understand the fun and challenges of outdoor activities, experience the importance of teamwork in group activities, and cultivate the spirit of helping each other and overcoming difficulties.
Thinking Quality: Infer the author’s emotional changes through the details in the diary; analyze the causes and solutions of problems in the trip; reflect on the gains and insights from outdoor activities.

II. Key & Difficult Points
Key: Understand the main plot and key details of the cycling trip; master the key words, phrases and sentence structures in the diary; grasp the time sequence of the diary.
Difficult: Infer the author’s emotional changes from the text; understand the deep meaning of teamwork and the fun of outdoor activities; apply the reading strategies to analyze similar narrative texts.
III. Teaching Procedures
Step 1: Pre-reading
Activity 1: Review & Lead-in
Review the outdoor activities learned in the previous lesson. Ask students: "If you go on a cycling trip with your friends, what preparations will you make? "
Step 2: While-reading
1. Skimming
Ask students to read the diary quickly and answer:
1 What is the main idea of the diary? (Simon’s amazing cycling trip with his friends, including getting lost and repairing the bike.)
2 How does Simon feel about the trip? (He thinks it’s amazing and fun.)
2. Scanning
Ask students to read the diary carefully and complete the timeline of the trip:
Time
Events
Feelings
After breakfast
Set off for a little village; followed the map but got lost.
A little worried.
Later
A driver helped them find the way.
Lucky.
After cycling for another hour
Arrived at the village; walked around and took photos.
Excited, enjoyable.
On the way back
Sandy’s bike had a problem; they all helped repair it.
Tired but proud.
3. Deep Reading
Ask students to read the diary again and discuss the following questions in pairs:
1 Why were they proud of their teamwork? (Because they all helped repair Sandy’s bike together.)
2 What can we learn from their trip? (The importance of teamwork, helping each other when in trouble, etc.)
Step 3: Post-reading
Activity : Group Discussion
Divide students into groups of 4. Discuss the following questions and prepare a 1-minute group report:
1 What do you think of Simon’s cycling trip? Why?
2 What gains can people get from outdoor activities like cycling trips?
Step 4: Summary & Homework
Summary: Review the main content of the diary, key words/phrases and the time sequence of the narrative; emphasize the importance of teamwork and courage to overcome difficulties in outdoor activities.
Homework:
Recite the key words and phrases of this lesson.
Retell the story of Simon’s cycling trip in your own words (80-100 words).
