China was the first country in the world to make paper.
The earliest paper appeared during the Western Han Dynasty. Before
paper, people wrote on bamboo, silk, or animal bones, which were either
heavy or expensive.
The Chinese inventor Cai Lun improved paper-making in 105 AD by
using tree bark, old rags, and fishing nets. This made paper lighter,
cheaper, and easier to produce. Later, paper-making spread to other
countries, greatly helping the development of education and culture.
12
Today, paper is used everywhere—in books, newspapers, packaging
and more. However, making too much paper leads to deforestation
(森林砍伐), which harms the environment. Besides, every day people
throw away about 2,800 tons of paper in our city. It takes 17 trees to
make one ton of paper. Since it takes more than 10 years for a tree to
grow, we must start saving paper now. Here are some simple ways:#1.3
13
Save Paper, Save Environment.
★We can use both sides of every piece of paper.
★We can choose drinks in bottles instead of those in paper packets.
★We can also use cotton handkerchiefs(手帕) instead of paper ones.
★When we go shopping, we can use fewer paper bags.
★If the shop assistant gives us a paper bag, we can save it and reuse
it later.
14
Paper has played a key role in human progress, so we must use it
responsibly. By saving paper, we protect forests and reduce pollution.
Every small action counts—let's start today!
