“Can I have a glass of hot water?” This is a very common
question in a restaurant. For Chinese people, nothing is more common
than drinking hot water every day. Different from Westerners' drinking
cold water at home or in restaurants, Chinese people are always seen
carrying vacuum cups(保温杯), whether in winter or in summer.
Why do the Chinese prefer to drink hot water? In the 1950s, the
Chinese government suggested drinking boiled water to kill off
12
bacteria(细菌). Even now, hot water dispensers(饮水机) still appear in
public places like schools, hospitals and railway stations. The second
reason is Chinese people's traditional eating habits. It's believed that cold
food may do harm to your body and make you easily have a cold, while
hot water can be better to the stomach and improve their digestion(消化).
Another reason is based on traditional Chinese medicine, which takes the
concept of yin and yang seriously. Hot water is considered to be yang
and cold water yin. Drinking hot water can balance the yin and yang in
the body and lead to be healthier in cold weather.
However, for most Westerners, they believe that drinking hot water
may make your body protection weak. If you get used to drinking hot
water, the body may be unable to stand water below your body
temperature after a long period of time. That is to say, the body
endurance(耐力) declines, which may go against the rules of nature. And
in Western countries, people often eat hamburgers, cheese, and fried food,
which are all with high calories. As a matter of fact, they need cold
drinks to balance body heat.
As a native Chinese, do you think drinking hot water can be a
simple and effective way to keep healthy? Next time you have a cold,
will you still be against your mother's tip for drinking more hot water?#4.1
