Director Ken Burns is a great explainer, whose documentaries usually explore the story
of America from fresh angles,so that we can appreciate it on a deeper level. Now,he is
telling the story again through the soundtrack of country music in his new documentary
Country Music.
You may think it would be a relatively easy project:Beyond the common wisdom that
Hank Williams was country music's first great songwriter, there's a lot the average citizen
doesn't know about the other performers. So it would be good enough to include as many
clips(片段)of their performances as possible.
Indeed, there are many such entertaining moments in Burns'Country Music, including
a clip in which Dolly Parton explains how her 1974 hit I Will Always Love You was inspired
by her break with Porter Wagoner, the singing partner who launched her career.
Burns'Country Music begins in the 1920s,with pioneering producer Ralph Peer
recording country artists for the first time, and continues on,in eight two-hour parts,up
through the 1990s.(Burns seems to have thrown up his hands before entering the 21st
century.Perhaps he feels that it is almost impossible to explain"bro country"or the rise of
Taylor Swift.)The production also includes many interviews of country music stars who
keep praising each other.Pretty soon, all the back-scratching becomes tiresome.
There are also times when some of Burns'best ideas aren't well-presented.The film's
second hour has a promising section about the comedian Minnie Pearl,a woman too often
ignored in surveys.Yet,after showing her as a college-educated humorist, the documentary
just gives her a bit of audio.I was really shocked. In general,Burns presents what used to be
called the "Great Man"theory of history:The biggest stars and the most obvious ideas are
the ones considered most worthy.
In short,Burns goes wide, not deep in Country Music. It's rare for any musical clip to
last more than 20 seconds, making it impossible for a singer to make an impression on
viewers who are unfamiliar with the singer's work.
24.What can we know about Hank Williams?
A.He was largely ignored by music critics.
B.He helped Dolly Parton launch her career.
C.He is a pioneering country music songwriter.
D.He recorded country artists for the first time.
25.Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word"back-scratching"in paragraph 4?
A.Short clips.B.Rare soundtracks C.Joint efforts.D.Favorable remarks.
26.What message does the author really want to convey in paragraph 5?

In recent years, there has been a significant shift towards adopting eco-friendly
practices and promoting sustainable lifestyles. This global trend is fueled by various factors,
ranging from heightened environmental awareness to economic advantages.
A primary driver behind the rise of green living is the increasing awareness of
environmental issues, particularly the urgent need to address climate change. As people
become more informed about the harmful effects of carbon emissions, deforestation, and
pollution, there is a collective push toward adopting practices that minimize ecological
impact.
Beyond environmental concerns, there are some economic motives driving the shift
toward sustainability. For instance,energy-efficient technologies and practices can
significantly reduce utility bills over time, making them financially advantageous for
homeowners and businesses alike.Additionally, governments and organizations often offer
some financial stimuli such as tax credits and subsidies (to encourage the development
and adoption of renewable energy sources.
For example, solar energy has emerged as a frontrunner in the renewable energy sector,
attracting widespread interest from homeowners and businesses seeking clean energy
solutions.Solar panels use sunlight to generate electricity, offering a sustainable alternative
to traditional fossil fuels. The declining costs of solar technology, coupled with
advancements in efficiency and storage capabilities, have made solar panels increasingly
practical and cost-effective.
Consumer attitudes and preferences are also factors driving the demand for sustainable
products and services.Millennials(千禧一代)and Generation Z,in particular,prioritize
environmental responsibility and prefer to support businesses that demonstrate a.
commitment to sustainability. This shift has urged businesses across various sectors to
integrate eco-friendly practices into their operations, from sustainable sourcing to waste
reduction initiatives.
Moreover, the power of social influence cannot be underestimated in shaping consumer

integrate sustainable practices and technologies into everyday life, individuals and
communities can contribute to lessening climate change and creating a healthier planet for
future generations.

Lin Hao,a 17-year-old key member of the school track and field team, had been
training hard for the important city trial.Only the top four teams could qualify for the
provincial competition. The team's timing device, necessary for their daily practice, was lost
the day before.
Worried that the team might lose the qualification,Lin Hao went alone at dawn to
search for it on the suburban training path.Soon the weather turned much worse:heavy
snow was falling, and the wind was blowing strongly. The path was quiet and empty, with no
people or cars around.
Suddenly,a low cry broke the silence.Lin Hao ran over at once and found a junior
student trembling under a tree.He was cold and scared, for he had lost his way back to
school.Worse still,Lin Hao found there was no signal on his phone in this remote area.
Lin Hao was facing a difficult choice. If he kept searching for the timing device, the lost
boy might be in great danger in the heavy snow.If he stopped to help the boy,he might miss
the only chance to find the device, and his team would fail to take part in the trial.Standing
in the snow,Lin Hao hesitated, torn between honor and duty.
