When John Todd was a child, he loved to explore the woods around his house, observing how nature solved problems. A dirty stream, for example, often became clear after flowing through plants and along rocks where tiny creatures lived. When he got older, John started to wonder if this process could be used to clean up the messes people were making.
After studying agriculture, medicine, and fisheries in college, John went back to observing nature and asking questions. Why can certain plants trap harmful bacteria? Which kinds of fish can eat cancer-causing chemicals? With the right combination of animals and plants, he figured, maybe he could clean up waste the way nature did. He decided to build what he would later call an eco-machine.
The task John set for himself was to remove harmful substances from some sludge (污泥). First, he constructed a series of clear fiberglass tanks connected to each other. Then he went around to local ponds and streams and brought back some plants and animals. He placed them in the tanks and waited. Little by little, these different kinds of life got used to one another and formed their own ecosystem. After a few weeks, John added the sludge.
He was amazed at the results. The plants and animals in the eco-machine took the sludge as food and began to eat it! Within weeks, it had all been digested, and all that was left was pure water.
Over the years, John has taken on many big jobs. He developed a greenhouse-like facility that treated sewage (污水) from 1,600 homes in South Burlington. He also designed an eco-machine to clean canal water in Fuzhou, a city in southeast China.
“Ecological design” is the name John gives to what he does. “Life on Earth is kind of a box of spare parts for the inventor,” he says. “You put organisms in new relationships and observe what’s happening. Then you let these new systems develop their own ways to self-repair.”
41.What can we learn about John from the first two paragraphs?
A.He enjoyed being alone. B.He was fond of traveling.
C.He longed to be a doctor. D.He had an inquiring mind.
42.Why did John put the sludge into the tanks?
A.To test the eco-machine. B.To build an ecosystem.
C.To protect the plants. D.To feed the animals.
43.What happened to the sludge in the eco-machine?
A.It remained unchanged. B.It was removed permanently.
C.It was eaten by plants and animals. D.It transformed into harmful substances.
44.What is the author’s purpose in mentioning Fuzhou?
A.To review John’s research plans. B.To compare John’s different jobs.
C.To show an application of John’s idea. D.To eras doubts about John’s invention.
45.What is the basis for John’s work?
A.Nature can repair itself. B.Life on Earth is diverse.
C.Organisms need water to survive. D.Most tiny creatures live in groups.

He decided to build what he would later call an eco-machine.(在大学里学习了农业、医学和渔业知识之后,约翰又重新投入到对自然的观察和探索中,并开始提出各种问题。
根据第三段“After a few weeks, John added the sludge.(几周后,John加入了污泥)”和第四段“He was amazed at the results. The plants and animals in the eco-machine took the sludge as food and began to eat it! Within weeks, it had all been digested, and all that was left was pure water.(他对这一结果感到十分惊讶。生态机器中的植物和动物将污泥当作食物并开始食用它!短短几周内,所有的污泥都被消化掉了,剩下的就只有纯净的水了)”可推知,他把污泥加进去是为了测试生态机器的效果,结果是污泥全部被净化了。故选A。
根据第四段“The plants and animals in the eco-machine took the sludge as food and began to eat it!(生态机器中的植物和动物将污泥当作食物,并开始食用它!)”
根据第五段“Over the years, John has taken on many big jobs. He developed a greenhouse-like facility that treated sewage (污水) from 1,600 homes in South Burlington. He also designed an eco-machine to clean canal water in Fuzhou. a city in southeast China.(多年来,约翰承担了许多艰巨的任务。他建造了一个类似温室的设施,用于处理南伯灵顿1600户家庭的污水。他还设计了一种生态净化设备,用于净化中国东南部城市福州的运河水)”可知,John已经承担了很多大型工作。紧接着通过他的发明应用于南伯林顿和福州的例子来说明他的想法在实践中的应用。故选C。
45.推理判断题。根据第二段“With the right combination of animals and plants, he figured, maybe he could clean up waste the way nature did. He decided to build what he would later call an eco-machine.(他认为,如果能将合适的动植物组合起来,或许就能像大自然那样处理废弃物了。于是,他决定建造一个他后来称之为“生态机器”的装置)”和最后一段中的“Then you let these new systems develop their own ways to self-repair.(然后你让这些新系统发展出自己的自我修复方式)”可推知,他工作的基础是自然会自我修复。故选A。

Charter schools operate with public money but without many of the rules that govern traditional public schools. In the United States the rules for charter schools differ from state to state. But in general these schools have greater freedom to decide what to teach and how to teach it.
The “charter” is a performance contract. It establishes the goals of the school and other details like how student performance will be measured. Forty-seven million students attend traditional public schools. But more than a million students attend charter schools.
And now a group of charter schools have formed the Green Charter Schools Network. The idea is to have environmentally friendly school buildings but to also go further than that. The schools teach students to become involved in community issues that affect them and the environment. For example, young children grow crops in a school garden and learn about healthy eating. Older students help recycle waste from the cafeteria. And local schools share what they grow in community gardens with people in need.
Jim McGrath is president of the Green Charter Schools Network. He says there are about two hundred “green” charter schools across the United States. He says the plan is to also include traditional public schools as well as private schools.
Jim McGrath: “The most important thing is that every one of us — every child, every adult — has a responsibility that their action, every action we make has an effect on the earth that we live in, and that our natural resources are not unlimited, and that if we want a positive earth for future generations, we all need to make commitments to be agents of change so that we don’t destroy our natural resources.”
The Green Charter Schools Network holds its first national conference this October in Minnesota. It will include companies and organizations like Waste Management and the United States Green Building Council. We sincerely hope that their goal is to expand the movement across the country.
46.Charter schools are quite different from public ones in that _______.
A.they are operated by public money. B.they still use the traditional rules.
C.they have more freedom in management. D.they attract more students than others.
47.The Green Charter Schools Network is established to _______.
A.advise teenagers to attend charter schools B.paint the school building in the color green
C.measure the students with the same standard D.get students involved in environment friendly activities
48.The following statements about the Network are true EXCEPT that _______.
A.it only concerns the charter schools in the U.S.
B.it holds its first national conference in Minnesota.
C.it will benefit both the schools and the communities.
D.it promotes different schools to share their achievements.
49.According to Jim McGrath, _______.
A.people’s action plays little part in nature
B.natural resources are abundant for people to use
C.students should be taught to be responsible for the world
D.everyone should make efforts to change the positive nature
50.What’s the writer’s purpose of this passage?
A.To criticize the traditional education system.
B.To encourage the students to adopt healthy eating.
C.To inspire people to recycle waste from the cafeteria.
D.To arouse the schools to take action to protect the earth
【答案】46.C 47.D 48.A 49.C 50.D
根据第一段的句子“Charter schools operate with public money but without many of the rules that govern traditional public schools. In the United States the rules for charter schools differ from state to state. But in general these schools have greater freedom to decide what to teach and how to teach it.(特许学校依靠公共资金运作,但没有传统公立学校的许多规定。在美国,特许学校的规定因州而异。但总的来说,这些学校有更大的自由来决定教什么和怎么教。)”可知,特许学校与传统公立学校最大的不同在于管理自由度更大。故选C项。
47.细节理解题。根据第三段的句子“And now a group of charter schools have formed the Green Charter Schools Network. The idea is to have environmentally friendly school buildings but to also go further than that. The schools teach students to become involved in community issues that affect them and the environment.(现在一些特许学校组成了绿色特许学校网络。我们的想法是建造环境友好型的学校建筑,但还不止于此。学校教导学生参与影响他们和环境的社区问题。)”可知,绿色特许学校网络的成立是为了让学生参与环保活动。故选D项。
48.细节理解题。第四段Jim McGrath明确表示计划“Jim McGrath is president of the Green Charter Schools Network. He says there are about two hundred “green” charter schools across the United States. He says the plan is to also include traditional public schools as well as private schools.(吉姆·麦格拉思是绿色特许学校网络的主席。他说,美国大约有200所“绿色”特许学校。他说,该计划还包括传统的公立学校和私立学校。)”可知,绿色特许学校网络不只关注特许学校。故选A项。
第五段Jim McGrath强调“The most important thing is that every one of us——every child, every adult——has a responsibility that their action, every action we make has an effect on the earth that we live in, and that our natural resources are not unlimited, and that if we want a positive earth for future generations, we all need to make commitments to be agents of change so that we don’t destroy our natural resources.(最重要的是,我们每一个人——每一个孩子,每一个成年人——都有责任,他们的行为,我们的每一个行为都会对我们居住的地球产生影响,我们的自然资源不是无限的,如果我们想为后代创造一个积极的地球,我们都需要做出承诺,成为变革的推动者,这样我们就不会破坏我们的自然资源。)”
文章整体介绍绿色特许学校网络的环保倡议,最后一段呼吁“We sincerely hope that their goal is to expand the movement across the country.(我们真诚希望他们的目标是将运动扩展到全国。)”

One thing the tour books don’t tell you about London is that 2,000 of its residents are foxes. They ran away from the city about centuries ago after developers and pollution moved in. But now that the environment is cleaner, the foxes have come home, one of the many wild animals that have moved into urban areas around the world.
“The number and variety of wild animals in urban areas is increasing,” says Gomer Jones, president of the National Institute for Urban Wildlife, in Columbia, Maryland. A survey of the wildlife in New York’s Central Park last year tallied the species of mammals, including muskrats (麝鼠), shrews (鼩睛) and flying squirrels. A similar survey conducted in the 1890s counted only five species. One of the country’s largest populations of raccoon now lives in Washington D.C., and moose (驼鹿) are regularly seen wandering into Maine towns. Peregrine falcons (游隼) dive from the window ledges of buildings in the largest U. S. cities to prey on pigeons.
Several changes have brought wild animals to the cities. Foremost is that air and water quality in many cities has improved as a result of the 1970s pollution-control efforts. Meanwhile, rural areas have been built up, leaving many animals on the edges of suburbs. In addition, urban wildlife refuges have been created. The Greater London Council last year spent £750,000 to buy land and build10 permanent wildlife refuges in the city. Over 1,000 volunteers have donated money and cleared rubble from derelict (荒废的) lots. One evening last year a fox was seen on Westminster Bridge looking up at Big Ben.
For peregrine falcons, cities are actually safer than rural cliff dwellings By 1970 the birds had died out east of the Mississippi because the DDT had made their eggs too thin to support life. That year, scientist Tom Cade of Cornell University began raising the birds for release in cities, for cities afforded abundant food.
Cities can attract wild animals without turning them harmful. The trick is to create habitats where they can be self-sufficient but still be seen and appreciated. Such habitats can even be functional. In San Francisco, the local government is testing different kinds of rainwater control basins to see not only which ones retain (保持) the cleanest water but which will attract the most birds.
51.The passage mentions a significant increase in mammal species in New York’s Central Park to _________.
A.Highlight the unexpected diversity found in small urban parks.
B.Provide evidence supporting the claim that wildlife in urban areas is increasing.
C.Contrast the wildlife success in New York with the failure in other cities.
D.Argue that shrews and flying squirrels are better adapted to cities than foxes.
52.Which of the following is NOT a reason that wildlife is returning to the cities?
A.Food is plentiful in the cities.
B.Wildlife is threatened by predators in the wild.
C.Wildlife refuges have been built in the cities
D.Air and water quality has improved in the cities
53.The underlined word “tallied” in Para.2 means _________.
A.Distinguished B.described C.counted D.excluded
54.The example of San Francisco testing rainwater basins implies that _________.
A.Cities prioritize bird attraction over clean water management:
B.Ecological benefits and practical functions cannot be achieved at the same time.
C.Wildlife habitats in cities can be designed to serve dual purposes.
D.Birds are the best indicator species for urban water cleanliness.
55.What is the passage mainly about?
A.Wildlife returning to large cities
B.Foxes returning to London
C.Wild animals living in zoos
D.A survey of wildlife in New York
【答案】51.B 52.B 53.C 54.C 55.A
根据第二段““The number and variety of wild animals in urban areas is increasing,” says Gomer Jones, president of the National Institute for Urban Wildlife, in Columbia, Maryland.(马里兰州哥伦比亚市国家城市野生动物研究所所长戈默·琼斯说:“城市地区野生动物的数量和种类正在增加。”)”
根据第三段“Foremost is that air and water quality in many cities has improved as a result of the 1970s pollution - control efforts. Meanwhile, rural areas have been built up, leaving many animals on the edges of suburbs. In addition, urban wildlife refuges have been created.(首先,由于20世纪70年代的污染控制措施,许多城市的空气和水质得到了改善。与此同时,农村地区得到了开发,许多动物来到了郊区边缘。此外,城市还建立了野生动物保护区)”以及第四段“for cities afforded abundant food(因为城市提供了丰富的食物)”可知,A选项“Food is plentiful in the cities.(城市里食物充足)”、C选项“Wildlife refuges have been built in the cities(城市里建立了野生动物保护区)”、D选项“Air and water quality has improved in the cities(城市的空气和水质得到了改善)”均是野生动物回归城市的原因。B选项“Wildlife is threatened by predators in the wild.(野生动物在野外受到捕食者的威胁)”在文中未提及是野生动物回归城市的原因。故选B项。
根据第二段“A survey of the wildlife in New York's Central Park last year tallied the species of mammals, including muskrats(麝鼠), shrews(鼩睛) and flying squirrels. A similar survey conducted in the 1890s counted only five species.(去年对纽约中央公园野生动物的一项调查tallied哺乳动物的种类,包括麝鼠、鼩鼱和飞鼠。19 世纪 90 年代进行的一项类似调查仅统计出了五个物种)”可知,此处“tallied”与“counted”意思相近,意为“统计,计数”。故选C项。
54.推理判断题。根据最后一段“The trick is to create habitats where they can be self - sufficient but still be seen and appreciated. Such habitats can even be functional. In San Francisco, the local government is testing different kinds of rainwater control basins to see not only which ones retain (保持) the cleanest water but which will attract the most birds.(诀窍在于创造栖息地,让它们能够自给自足,同时又能被看到和欣赏。
A选项“Wildlife returning to large cities(野生动物回归大城市)”符合文章主旨。故选A项。
Milan-based company Krill Design is changing the way we think about waste by creating furniture products from a plastic-like biomaterial named Rekrill. The special material is biodegradable, and can be used repeatedly.
Founded in 2018, Krill uses fruit skin, orange seeds and coffee grounds collected from businesses in Italy to create their unique designs, including bookends, clocks, bowls, and lamps. Each product is made through a four-step process. “There are a lot of companies that create designs, and we want to be different,” says MarcoDi Maio, director of operations at Krill.
Krill has worked together with some well-known brands and has also joined in a Co. ffee Era project with the government of Milan to reduce coffee waste produced in three of the city's neighborhoods. Krill has made products that match the color of food waste. For example, bright orange products are from orange skin and rich dark brown products are from coffee grounds.
Rekrill is as strong as wood and breaks down safely unless it's touched by water or acidity. It is also safe for fish to eat. But despite its eco-friendly benefits, Rekrill is more expensive than common plastic due to its complex production process. However, Krill hopes that as awareness of the environmental impact of plastics grows, Rekrill will be more widely used. Krill is exploring the use of other food waste, such as eggshells and leftover tomatoes and grapes, aiming to make its production process more efficient and cost-effective.
The company believes Rekrill is the material of the future. Every small step they take toward a sustainable world contributes to a more recyclable economy and inspires others to follow suit.
56.How does the company Krill Design change the way people think about waste? (no more than 10 words)
57.How many steps does each product need before it is made? (no more than 2 words)
58.What is the disadvantage of Rekrill compared with common plastic? (no more than 5 words)
59.What does the underlined word in paragraph 1 mean? (no more than 1 word)
60.What do you think of Rekrill and explain? (no more than 20 words)
56.By creating furniture products from a plastic-like biomaterial named Rekrill. 57.Four steps 58.It is more expensive. 59.Renewable/Recyclable/Reusable. 或Breaking down easily 60.It is eco-friendly. Because it can break down easily and helps protect the environment.
根据第一段“Milan-based company Krill Design is changing the way we think about waste by creating furniture products from a plastic-like biomaterial named Rekrill.(米兰的Krill Design公司通过创造由名为Rekrill的类似塑料的生物材料制成的家具产品,改变了我们对废物的看法。)” By creating furniture products from a plastic-like biomaterial named Rekrill.
根据第二段“Each product is made through a four-step process.(每个产品都是通过一个四步流程制成的。)”
根据第四段“But despite its eco-friendly benefits, Rekrill is more expensive than common plastic due to its complex production process.(尽管它具有环保优势,但由于其复杂的生产过程,Rekrill比普通塑料更昂贵。)” It is more expensive.
根据第四段“Rekrill is as strong as wood and breaks down safely unless it's touched by water or acidity.(Rekrill和木头一样坚固,除非接触到水或酸性物质,否则可以安全分解。)” 故答案填Renewable/Recyclable/Reusable. 或Breaking down easily。
根据第四段“It is also safe for fish to eat. But despite its eco-friendly benefits, Rekrill is more expensive than common plastic due to its complex production process.(它对鱼类也是安全的。但尽管它具有环保优势,但由于其复杂的生产过程,Rekrill比普通塑料更昂贵。)”可知,因为它容易分解,有助于保护环境。所以考生可以认为Rekrill是一种环保材料。故答案填It is eco-friendly. Because it can break down easily and helps protect the environment.

As is known to all, the environment around us is getting worse and worse. In some places, we can see dirty rivers and the gray sky and that people have no clean water to drink, so we should do something to make a difference now.
First and foremost, we aren’t supposed to throw rubbish into rivers, which is one reason why it becomes smelly. Moreover, the habit of saving water ought to be formed in our daily lives. Last but not least, it is significant to encourage people to use more public transportation to reduce emission of waste gas.
In summary, if everyone makes contributions to protecting the environment, our country will become cleaner and nicer. Let’s join hands to build a beautiful China!
