In the text, the professor says, “At last this long night passed. Daybreak appeared.”What does this sentence symbolize? How does it reflect the theme of the story?
This sentence is a strong symbol of hope and perseverance after suffering. The “long night” stands for the terrible danger and despair the professor and his companions experienced at sea—being adrift, exhausted, and close to drowning. “Daybreak” represents the arrival of relief and a new chance for survival. It reflects the story’s theme that even in the darkest moments, persistence and courage can lead people out of trouble and into a brighter future.
