Can you believe that mice can save people's lives? Now scientists are training mice to help save trapped (受困的) people after earthquakes.
This is a part of a special scientific project (项目) called "HeroRATs". Donna Kean, a scientist from Scotland, is working on this project. She trains mice to wear very small bags with cameras inside. With the help of the mice, it will be easier for rescue (救援) teams to know what is going on in the disaster area. Also, the teams can talk with trapped people to make them less nervous and afraid.
Mice are good at moving through small spaces. They can live on anything and live in highly dangerous places. As a result, they are perfect for the searching work in earthquake areas. Mice are also intelligent. Scientists trained mice to collect information. To their surprise, it only took seven mice two weeks to learn those skills. So scientists decided to train another 163 mice for other disasters.
But why not dogs? Both of them have a good sense of smell but the sense of mice is better than that of dogs. Moreover, people can catch, feed and take care of mice much more easily. They learn things very fast, and they don't get bored as easily as dogs. They work better and harder.
Kean was glad that the mice could learn the skills so quickly, "They are amazing! I hope they will be able to save lives in the future."
