Lesson Plan 1: Welcome to the Unit
Textbook Reference: 7B Unit 6, Pages 68-69
I. Teaching Objectives
Language Ability: Master core vocabulary and key sentence patterns; correctly pronounce and use the words and structures in oral communication to talk about natural landscapes.
Cultural Awareness: Learn basic facts about the earth’s typical landscapes, know about famous natural landscapes in China, and cultivate the awareness of appreciating natural beauty and protecting the natural world.
Thinking Quality: Classify different natural landscapes according to their characteristics; infer the basic features of landscapes through given clues and express them logically.
Learning Ability: Cooperate with peers to complete dialogue practice and landscape discussion; independently collect information about famous landscapes in China for extended learning.
II. Key & Difficult Points
Key: Master the pronunciation and meaning of target vocabulary; proficiently use the dialogue model to talk about the features of different natural landscapes.
Difficult: Use complex sentence structures ("It rises in... and runs all the way to..." "It covers about... of...") to describe the details of landscapes accurately; stimulate sustained interest in the unit topic of natural landscapes.
III. Teaching Procedures
Step 1: Lead-in (5 mins)
Activity: Picture Matching & Guess the Landscape
Show pictures of oceans, deserts, forests, mountains, rivers and plains. Ask students to match the pictures with the English words (ocean/desert/forest etc.). Then give clues for guessing:
1 It’s a huge area of water and covers most of the earth’s surface. (ocean)
2 It’s very dry and hot during the day, with a lot of sand. (desert)
Step 2: Presentation (15 mins)
1. Vocabulary Teaching
Use real pictures and videos to explain the meaning of words:
(1) show the sea for ocean, sand dunes for desert, dense trees for forest, stone mountains for rock, open land for plain;
(2) explain flat with the contrast of "mountain (high)" and "plain (flat)", rise with the sentence "The sun rises in the east".
2. Dialogue Model Analysis
Play the audio of Part B . Ask students to answer two questions:
1 How long is the Yangtze River?
2 Where does the Yangtze River rise and run to?
Highlight the key sentence patterns on the blackboard and explain their usage:
1 Do you know any famous + landscapes (rivers/mountains/forests)?
2 Can you tell me something about it?
3 It’s about + number + kilometres long.
4 It rises in... and runs all the way to...
Step 3: Practice (15 mins)
Activity 1: Pair Work - Landscape Talk
Provide a dialogue frame and let students practice in pairs.
1 Student A: Do you know any famous rivers in China?
2 Student B: Yes. I know the Yellow River.
3 Student A: Can you tell me something about it?
4 Student B: Well, it’s about 5,464 kilometres long, and it runs through different provinces in northern China.
5 Student A: Wow! What a great river!
Step 4: Consolidation (7 mins)
Exercise: Fill in the Blanks
Complete the sentences with the correct forms of the target words.
The Pacific ______ (ocean) is the largest ocean in the world.
The Sahara ______ (desert) is in northern Africa.
This river ______ (rise) in the mountains and flows into the sea.
The ______ (plain) is open and ______ (flat), good for farming.
Forests cover a large area of the ______ (land) in our country.
Step 5: Summary & Homework (3 mins)
Summary: Review the target vocabulary and key sentence patterns of this lesson; emphasize that the earth has various beautiful landscapes, and we should learn to appreciate and protect them.
Homework:
Recite the new words and the dialogue in Part B.
Search for 2 famous natural landscapes in China (one river, one mountain), write down their basic facts (length/location/features) in English.
