If you are reading this, you were probably born in the 2000s. The oh-ohs. The 21st century. That would make you young, creative, and no doubt smart. Maybe good-looking, too. Right? But what do other people think about your generation?
Some adults worry that you’re more interested in the screen in front of you than the world around you. They think of you as the “face-down generation” because you use your phone so much. They wonder how you will deal with school, friends and family. Are today’s teenagers too busy texting and taking selfies (自拍) to become successful in real life or “IRL”, as you would say?
Other adults worry that today’s youth are spoilt (溺爱) and don’t want to face the challenges of adult life. Many children born in the 1990s and 2000s were raised by “helicopter parents” who were always there to guide and help their children with a busy schedule filled with homework and after-school activities such as dancing, drawing, or sports. With parents who do everything for them, today’s youth seem to prefer to live like teenagers even when they are in their 20s or 30s.
Does the face-down generation need a heads-up? Well, probably not. The fact is that many of today’s teenagers are better educated and more creative than past generations. They also seem to be willing to become leaders. More young people than ever volunteer to help their communities. There are also brave young people such as Malala Yousafzai, the teenager who won the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize for pushing girls’ rights to go to school.
So if you’re one of the oh-ohs, there’s no reason to be worried about the future. Things are looking up for the face-down generation.
19.Who is this passage written for?
A.The teenager. B.The teachers. C.The parents. D.The oh-ohs.
20.What do helicopter parents always do?
A.Help and direct their children.
B.Do homework instead of children.
C.Guide children to face challenges.
D.Plan a busy schedule for children.
21.How does the writer feel about the younger generation?
A.Anxious. B.Confident. C.Dissatisfied. D.Helpless
22.What can we learn according to the passage?
A.Parents should put down their phones.
B.Young people should be better educated.
C.The oh-ohs should be hopeful about the future.
D.Face-down generation should raise their heads.
【答案】19.D 20.A 21.B 22.C
根据“If you are reading this, you were probably born in the 2000s. The oh-ohs.”
根据“Many children…were raised by ‘helicopter parents’ who were always there to guide and help their children with a busy schedule…” 故选A。
根据“So if you’re one of the oh-ohs, there’s no reason to be worried about the future. Things are looking up for the face-down generation.”
根据“there’s no reason to be worried about the future”和“Things are looking up for the face-down generation”可知,作者认为“oh-ohs”一代应对未来充满希望。故选C。
C
While everyone is having a heated discussion about China’s DeepSeek AI model, there’s something many miss:To young Americans like me, DeepSeek isn’t just impressive-it’s actually cool. All of them don’t know China well, but they find Chinese internet culture fresh and exciting.
Why? First, China’s internet really offers special experiences and Chinese apps show growing creativity. I don’t use TikTok much myself, but its energy beats any US video platform. It’s said that over half of Americans actively use it:
When TikTok faced legal (法律的) problems this month, American teens didn’t turn to European choices. They rushed to a Chinese app called rednote (Xiaohongshu). With 300 million Chinese users, this platform recently became popular in America too. The app mixes Chinese text with fashion photos and funny animal pictures for young people from both countries to exchange information there.
DeepSeek itself stands out among AI chatbots. Besides its technical (技术的) skills and low cost, it has personality. Its replies can be playful or childlike for us - it even rewrote John Milton’s Paradise Lost as an original (原创的) story!
Old generations found Europe culturally “cool”, but now China stands as America’s only true equal in global (全球的) influence. Though our cultures are quite different, both nations share features like openness and business energy. Having visited China 11 times, I’ve seen how its talent creates online experiences that attract Americans.
People focus too much on DeepSeek’s technical progress and miss the bigger picture: China isn’t just catching up technologically, but culturally too. Their internet world feels alive in ways that connect with young Americans’ hope for something new.
23.What do rednote and DeepSeek have in common?
A.They are only popular among young users.
B.They face legal challenges in the US market.
C.They join technology and youth’s taste together.
D.They have won against technology companies worldwide.
24.Why does the writer talk about his 11 trips to China?
A.To make the readers feel closer. B.To make his ideas more believable.
C.To show his love for China. D.To compare China’s past and present.
25.Which of the following ideas might the writer agree with?
A.China’s cultural power is growing with technical progress.
B.AI should value technical skills more than creative features.
C.American youth will stop using European cultural products.
D.TikTok’s success proves Chinese apps will beat Western ones.
26.Where is the passage probably taken from?
A.A government report. B.An educational magazine.
C.A history textbook. D.A technology website.
【答案】23.C 24.B 25.A 26.D
根据“this platform recently became popular in America too. The app mixes Chinese text with fashion photos and funny animal pictures”和“DeepSeek itself stands out among AI chatbots. Besides its technical skills...it has personality. Its replies can be playful or childlike”可知,小红书融合时尚、趣味元素,DeepSeek兼具技术与趣味性,二者均结合了技术与年轻人的喜好。故选C。
根据“Having visited China 11 times, I’ve seen how its talent creates online experiences that attract Americans.”
根据“China isn’t just catching up technologically, but culturally too.” 故选A。
D
We know that AI is not a real human. However, it seems many of us can’t help treating it like one. In a survey of 2000 people in the US. 48 percent believed we should have good manners when talking to AI, said The New York Post.
Scientists at the Imperial College London in the UK have made a similar discovery recently. They found that humans tend (往往会) to treat AI as human beings, showing sympathy (同情) toward them and even protecting them, Science Daily reported.
In their experiment, the scientists invited 244 volunteers to play an online ball game with an AI bot. A make-believe volunteer also took part, and sometimes left out the AI on purpose by passing the ball only to human players. As the scientists watched the game, they discovered that most of the time the volunteers tried to fix the unfairness (不公平) toward the bot by giving it the ball more often.
The finding is in line with the ideas of Media Equation Theory, the scientists said in their papers. Developed in the 1990s by scientists at Stanford University in the US, the theory suggests we often reply to media and technology like we do to real people and places, rather than just seeing them as tools.
An example is Replika, an AI chatbot created in 2017. It has about 2 million users worldwide. “Your Replika will always be your side no matter what you are up to,” reads its official website. But the AI’s support turned dangerous when it encouraged Jaswant Singh Chail, a young man in the UK, to carry out his plan to kill the Queen of England. Chail tried to do so in December 2021, but he was stopped in time. However, he was still put in prison.
Companies should avoid making AI too human-like in their design, advised the scientists at Imperial College London. This can help people tell the difference between virtual and real communication.
27.Which of the following is TRUE based on Media Equation Theory?
A.Humans always treat AI as tools. B.Humans often reply to AI as to real people.
C.Humans should make AI less human-like. D.Humans tried to fix unfairness in the game.
28.What does the author want to tell us by mentioning “Replika” in the article?
A.AI has educational advantages. B.AI can influence humans in some ways.
C.AI is designed for some purposes. D.AI can’t be used in social communication.
29.What can be inferred (推断) from the article?
A.AI always has bad influence on humans.
B.Nearly half people in the US treat AI politely.
C.Treating AI more carefully is a must for humans.
D.Companies won’t make AI as friends any more.
30.The following sentence can best be put at the end of ________.
While this could make humans and AI work better as a team, it also has risks, especially when AI bots are designed to act like “friends” to people.
A.Paragraph 2 B.Paragraph 3 C.Paragraph 4 D.Paragraph 5
根据“the theory suggests we often reply to media and technology like we do to real people and places, rather than just seeing them as tools.”
根据“An example is Replika, an AI chatbot…But the AI’s support turned dangerous when it encouraged Jaswant Singh Chail, a young man in the UK, to carry out his plan to kill the Queen of England.”
根据“This can help people tell the difference between virtual and real communication.”
When you begin learning English, you probably just want to be able to order a coffee or find the toilet. But as you keep learning, you may want to sound more like a real English speaker. 31
First of all, you need to learn grammar. Grammar helps you put words in the right order. If your grammar is wrong, it can be hard for people to understand you.
But this doesn’t mean you have to speak like someone in a book! In fact, sometimes you should do the opposite! 32 For example, they use contractions. A contraction is when you put two words together, like “can’t” instead of “cannot”, or “won’t” instead of “will not”. They also say things like “gonna” for “going to” and “gotta” for “got to”. These words sound more natural when people speak, but we don’t usually write them.
People also use filler words. These are words like “um”, “so” or “you know”. 33 For example, someone might say, “So, I was thinking, um... Are you doing anything later?” It’s really important to use fillers—but not too often!
And while you might have learned in school to answer questions in full sentences, it’s not something you need to do when talking with friends. It’s okay to give short answers.
34 A great way to learn is by listening to people who speak English, like in movies or on the Internet. Try to copy how they talk. You’ll also hear cool phrases that can help you speak better. Just keep practicing—you’ll get better every day!
A.You could use fillers as much as you want.
B.Of course, learning to speak naturally takes time.
C. So how can you make your speech sound more natural?
D.They help fill the space while you think about what to say next.
E. People who speak English every day often talk in a more relaxed way.
What will you do to become a better speaker? Why? (no more than 25 words)
