Aptitude tests, which seek to measure students’ potential in a particular field, may be one way to help students decide their career paths. To understand how these tools may lead a particular student toward a field they may not have considered—or even heard of—researchers at the University of Missouri conducted an independent review. The study compared 7,222 high school students’ natural aptitudes with their self-reported interests in four areas:manufacturing(制造业),computer technology, construction, and healthcare. For healthcare, the study looked at both a student’s capacity and interest in direct patient care jobs and more technical jobs in the healthcare industry. The study included 3,619 females and 3,603 males. “If you just look at people’s interest scores, they fall into areas which I call what they are exposed to,what they can see based on their life experiences. Many young people are exposed to very little,” said Richard Feller,a professor at Colorado State University who worked on the study.Students’ different life experiences create an exposure gap,he said, that aptitude tests can help bridge.  The study found that more than four times as many girls were found to have potential in manufacturing, more than seven times more in construction and technical healthcare fields, and two times more in computer technology than an interest list alone would show. What’s more, males were more than 1.6 times more likely to show promise in patient care positions. “It opens up all kinds of opportunities for students who have been less fortunate and have been stereotyped,” Feller said.“We’ve got great potential that we’re not tapping into.” 1.What does the author think about the career prejudice mentioned in paragraph 1? A.It is deeply rooted in some truth. B.It is encouraged by a majority of people. C.It still affects students’ choices of career. D.It stops the popularity of a wide range of careers. 2.Why did researchers at the University of Missouri conduct the study? A.To improve students’ career ability. B.To assess the reliability of aptitude tests. C.To have a deep insight of students’ interests. D.To understand the function of aptitude tests. 3.What does the underlined phrase “an exposure gap” in paragraph 4 refer to? A.A low score in the interest test. B.A decreased relation to society. C.A huge difference among students. D.A lack of understanding of diverse careers. 4.What does Feller suggest in the last paragraph? A.Aptitude tests are beneficial. B.The future plan must be examined first. C.Studies need more participants. D.A narrower interest list would be better. There was plenty of space for the kids to run and play. There was just one thing I hadn’t counted on:My brother chose to bring his dog Toby,a 50-pound ball of fire.Though friendly,he could easily knock over my niece’s small boys and my six-month-old granddaughter. So,when my brother showed up,I asked him to watch Toby and keep him outside. My plan was working out just fine.Toby was using up his energy by running back and forth in the backyard and giving the kids plenty of room.Unexpectedly, after supper, the weather changed. It started to rain and everyone went indoors. It was an awkward moment.I didn’t want Toby to be running around in the house, and my brother wasn’t happy with driving home with a wet dog.Eventually,my brother decided to leave rather than force the issue. A few days passed, and I hadn’t heard anything from my brother.I texted him and expressed wishes for him to come out again. His reply came as a surprise—a shock, actually:“Not a chance.” Clearly,he was unhappy over the way we had parted. After all,I had left him little choice.Well,he’ll get over it,I reasoned. Two months passed. My wife suggested I get in touch with my brother, but I resisted, thinking he should call first. However,my conscience(良心) kept bothering me.I tried to put myself in my brother’s shoes. He was facing health issues and his wife of thirty-five years had passed away a few months earlier.Toby was his constant companion, the one who kept him going. I realized it was me who was at fault.                                                                                                                                                                With the biscuits my wife had made,I arrived at my brother’s door. 1.conduct an independent review             2.have potential in manufacturing If you just look at people’s interest scores, they fall into areas which I call what they are exposed to,what they can see based on their life experiences. if引导 从句;which引导 从句;what they are exposed to和what they can see based on their life experiences作 。  句意:                                    参考答案 Ⅰ.1.trials 2.spotlight 3.polishing 4.courtyard 5.precious Ⅱ.1.prosperous 2.restoration 3.preservation 4.modesty 5.domination Ⅲ.1.brought the once-polluted riverside back to life 2.dates back to hundreds of years ago 3.had known the truth;would have made a different decision 4.rushed the excited children 5.Neither the heavy rain nor the strong wind Ⅳ.【语篇解读】本文是一篇说明文。 根据文章第三段中的“To understand how these tools may lead a particular student toward a field they may not have considered—or even heard of—researchers at the University of Missouri conducted an independent review.” 根据画线短语上文“‘If you just look at people’s interest scores, they fall into areas which I call what they are exposed to,what they can see based on their life experiences. Many young people are exposed to very little,’ said Richard Feller,a professor at Colorado State University who worked on the study.” 故选A项。 故填to preserve。 3.has devoted/have devoted Since Li became a representative inheritor of Pengshui Miao embroidery in 2016可知,此处表示从过去某一时间点开始一直持续到现在的动作,应用现在完成时,其结构为“have/has + 过去分词”,couple,表“夫妇”,既可以视为单数,也可以视为复数。故填has devoted或have devoted。 分析句子可知, serves as a cornerstone for training programs是一个非限制性定语从句,先行词是company,指物,且在从句中作主语,应用关系代词which引导。故填which。 故填what。 While she is keeping Miao embroidery’s tradition,省略了主语she和be动词,所以此空应用动词-ing形式keeping。 Ⅵ.The Person I Respect  There are many respectable people around us.I have great admiration for my English teacher Mr.Sun,a middle-aged man of few words.  First, his helpfulness and kindness win him great popularity and a good reputation among us.Whatever difficulties we come across,he doesn’t hesitate to come to our aid.In some sense,he is virtually a beacon of hope, encouraging us never to give up.On top of that,it is his rich experience and devotion to teaching that not only give us easy access to professional knowledge but most importantly shape our character. Such is Mr.Sun that I have the highest respect for him and get along with him. Ⅶ.I realized it was me who was at fault. What I ignored was my brother’s feelings.Actually,Toby was to him what a child was to a parent.Feeling ashamed,I told my wife how I regretted refusing my brother’s dog to enter my house.Hearing my words, she nodded, saying that it was time to make up for my fault.I advised calling my brother and admitted I was wrong. However,my wife thought it was better to bring some tasty biscuits made by herself to visit my brother and his dog.I agreed.  With the biscuits my wife had made,I arrived at my brother’s door.Seeing my arrival,he looked greatly surprised.I apologized to him, saying that I shouldn’t have treated him and his dog so badly. With tears blurring his eyes,he forgave me and then chatted with me about Toby, who helped him feel relaxed and healthier.Without the dog,my brother wouldn’t live so happily.I expressed my wishes for him and Toby to visit my house again and my brother accepted my invitation. It was that experience that made me realize that admitting one’s fault and forgiving others play an indispensable part in our daily life.
