Christmas carnival Spring Festival Lantern Festival Thanksgiving Mother’s Day Dragon Boat Festival Mid-Autumn Festival The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is a traditional Chinese festival that takes place in the early summer on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. This festival is celebrated to honour the great poet Qu Yuan (340–278 B.C.), who lived during the Warring States period. It holds an important place in Chinese culture. Qu Yuan was a wise minister in the ancient state of Chu. He loved his country deeply, but was wrongly accused and banished. In despair over his nation’s fate, he drowned himself in the Miluo River. The local people, who admired him greatly, rushed out in their boats to save him. This act of rushing out in boats is believed to be the origin of the dragon boat races today. When they couldn’t find his body, the locals threw balls of rice into the river. They hoped the rice would feed the fish and keep his body from being eaten by fish. These rice balls, now called zongzi, are wrapped in reed leaves and shaped into triangles. Eating zongzi during the festival serves as a memory of their attempts to save and honour Qu Yuan. Learning about traditional festivals like the Dragon Boat Festival can help us bridge the gap between our past and present. Now, the festival is celebrated in many countries. In America, the Boston Dragon Boat Festival, held each year in June, is one of the biggest Boston Chinese cultural events of the year. In Canada, the Toronto International Dragon Boat Race Festival has been one of the most exciting summer events in Toronto. When people join in these celebrations, they can learn about each other’s cultures and make new friends. This helps us remember our history and stay connected with our past. 8 1.
