It is amazing to see how soft and quiet these colours are. Morandi colours are inspired by the Italian artist Giorgio Morandi. He used these colours to show the beauty of simple things in a peaceful way. While Morandi colours are often compared to traditional Chinese colours, the latter offer a different beauty that is deeply rooted in Chinese history and culture. Traditional Chinese colours appear in clothes, buildings, and art. Each colour means something special. For example, red is a lucky colour. It stands for happiness and is used in celebrations and weddings to bring people good luck. Haitianxia is the beautiful red you see where the sea and sky meet. Yuebai is the bluish white of the moon. These colours are often connected to the seasons, solar terms (which are a way to divide the year according to the sun’s position), and daily lives of Chinese people. Green means spring and new life. Summer has blue and bright greens for the sky and lushness of nature. Gold, orange, and red are autumn colours, representing changing leaves, harvest and warmth. Winter has white and black. White is for snow and purity, and black is for the deep mystery of cold and long nights. Chinese colours do more than just look pretty. They tell stories and feelings, and share the rich history and beliefs of the Chinese people. While Morandi colours offer a contemporary understated elegance, traditional Chinese colours create a strong connection to nature, the seasons, and culture in a lively way. They both show the power of colours in art and culture, and invite us to explore and appreciate the beauty around us. 1. Read and answer the questions. They reflect his struggle with deafness and his determination. Linda: Yes, Zhang Xu also changed his style as he grew older. It became stronger and freer. Maria: Martha’s early dances were more experimental, and she explored new ideas as she became an expert dancer. David: Artists talk to us about their lives through their works. We can hear Beethoven’s sadness and hope in his symphonies. Linda: True. Art is a window into the artist’s soul. Maria: And each viewer might see something different in the same piece of art. Paintings fade, sculptures crack, and ancient objects become fragile. These changes can happen because of natural ageing, environmental factors, or human actions. In the documentary Masters in the Forbidden City, we see how master repairmen work to bring these artworks back to life. This process is called art restoration. The experts carefully repair damage while preserving the artwork’s original beauty and history. Art restoration helps an old artwork tell its story again. The restorers use special tools and techniques to fix colours, mend cracks, or replace lost pieces. They need to understand both the art and the skill behind these ancient pieces. One challenge in art restoration is balancing the old and new. Restorers must decide how much to repair. They try to keep as much of the original as possible. Too much new material can hide the true essence of the artwork. The goal is to make the artwork stable and beautiful again without losing its historical value. In Masters in the Forbidden City, we see many examples of how artworks are brought back to life. A faded painting can regain its vivid colours. A broken sculpture might stand whole again. Each restored piece offers a glimpse into the past. Restoring artworks is important because it connects us to history. It helps us understand the beauty and beliefs of people who lived long ago. Each restored artwork teaches us about our heritage, and inspires us to appreciate and preserve the treasures of art. Art restoration is not just about techniques for fixing old things; it is also about respecting and reviving history, and is an art form itself. Through careful restoration, artworks continue to share their stories with new generations. 1. Read and answer the questions. What happens to artworks over time? What is art restoration?
