Chu Hongsheng (1918-2017) was famous in the fashion world for his skills in creating highly customized qipaos. Qipao is also called Cheongsam and has a long history in China. It is known for its elegance and beauty.
Chu Hongsheng’s Qipao Journey
1930s
A native of Suzhou, he was sent to Shanghai in the 1930s to learn how to make qipaos. His father believed that the job was “the best in the world” because it could be done indoors regardless of weather conditions. At that time, qipao was very popular and was seen as a symbol of style.
1980s
Even after the 1980s ,when the qipao was rarely seen on the streets ,Chu was still busy making the traditional dress.
2012
He had to stop working in 2012 because of a leg injury.
2015
He started again in 2015 to even hold a fashion show of qipao in Shanghai.
2017
Chu Hongsheng had devoted himself to crafting qipaos for more than 80 years by the time he passed away in 2017.
Chu made at least 5,000 qipaos in his lifetime. Some of Chu’s qipaos are worn by famous people and artists. One of the dresses he made, an all-white lace qipao, was displayed at a famous international fashion exhibition in 2015. He was very good at making qipao unique for each person. A good tailor, he said, must take 36 measurements of the body. He mixed old and new styles, making qipao both modern and traditional.
Chu was so famous for his craftsmanship that his creations were once compared to being “so delicate and fitting, like a second layer of skin”. His fans believe there will never again be a qipao tailor as passionate and skilled as he was.
