As a young girl, Ayshah grew up fascinated by the world of beauty.
She had a hole in her heart — a medical condition she was born with. Ayshah’s mother was especially protective of her because of her health condition, but encouraged her to pursue her dreams. When Ayshah finished high school, the most appealing option at her local technical college was training to become a make-up artist. So, she signed up for the three-year course.
While studying, Ayshah suffered the loss of her mother, which led the 21-year-old to become the primary supporter for her father, who was suffering from kidney failure, as well as for her younger sister and brother. “From that moment on, I knew I had to turn from being dependent to becoming stronger,” she says.
In three years, Ayshah completed her course at the technical college, along with her training. Then a friend told her about the opening of Roseyar, an Aramco initiative that supports local women by training and employing them at the rose factory in Taif, where she lives.
Taif is the heart of the rose-growing industry in western Saudi Arabia. Known as the Taif rose, these flowers are prized for their intense smell and are used by the world’s leading perfume makers. With nearly 900 rose farms, Taif has a centuries-old tradition of rose growing, and the roses are harvested to produce some of the world’s most expensive rose oil.
Ayshah joined Roseyar and trained as a production technician, using the oil of Taif roses to make cosmetic products. She reconnected with the cosmetic industry she loved as a child. “I truly love knowing that I am contributing to making something so beautiful,” she says.
The job at Roseyar has enabled Ayshah to meet her various responsibilities while being surrounded by the sweet smell of the Taif rose. “I’ve been able to balance having my medical treatment for my heart condition, supporting my family financially and providing for myself — I was even able to buy a car,” she says.
4. Why did Ayshah study at her local technical college?
A. She had health problems. B. She had to look after her father.
C. She was able to learn what she loves. D. She was eager to earn a high income in the future.
5. What does paragraph 5 mainly talk about?
A. The Roseyar project. B. The Taif rose industry.
C. The production of perfumes. D. The characteristics of Taif roses.
6. Which of the following best describes Ayshah?
A. Ambitious and responsible. B. Talented and determined.
C. Reliable and generous. D. Devoted and modest.
7. What does Ayshah think of her being part of Roseyar?
A. It’s rewarding. B. It’s demanding.
C. It’s a stepping stone to her dream. D. It opens up new opportunities for her.

Why climb Mount Qomolangma? “Because it’s there” George Mallory famously said.
In Mick Conefrey’s writings, where he explores the charm of high mountains through the perspective of George Mallory and the ill-fated 1924 expedition to Mount Qomolangma, he writes that the three words are “both the simplest and the most enigmatic (神秘的) explanation of the lure (吸引力) of high mountains.” However, Mount Qomolangma, as it stands today, appears less enigmatic and arguably less alluring. Each spring, several tons of rubbish are removed from this high-altitude tourist destination.
Mount Qomolangma that Mallory explored in the 1920s had less waste and more romance. The climbing equipment was basic: the ropes were like threads compared to modern nylon ones, and the wool clothing and boots were heavier and far less effective than modern specialized climbing gear (装备). Mr. Conefrey also notes: Mallory and his team “took risks that many of today’s climbers would find unacceptable.”
Weighing the available evidence, Mr. Conerey considers it “hard to imagine” that Mallory reached the summit (峰顶).
The rock wall that stood in Mallory’s way is now strung with fixed ropes and features a ladder attached to it. Though it’s not exactly a walk in the park, many inexperienced climbers get up and over it every year. Will Cockrell’s book seeks to explain how this came to be.
His account begins with Dick Bass, a 55-year-old Texas oilman who became the first private citizen to reach the peak of Mount Qomolangma. Experienced climbers helped Bass and others reach the summit in exchange for a free trip, thereby gaining experience that enabled them to set up commercial operations on Mount Qomolangma. They market themselves to rich adventurers, charge for their services and assume responsibility for whomever they take up the mountain.
The market advantage on Mount Qomolangma these days is all about efficiency: getting more people up the mountain in less time. Boundaries are being pushed, in ways both impressive and troubling. Perhaps it’s to Mr. Cockrell’s credit as a journalist that he appears mostly undisturbed (未受打扰的) by these developments. This is, after all, the way things are. For the moment, then, it looks as though every possible business opportunity will be grasped, “because it’s there.”
8. Which of the following can best describe the climbers of Mount Qomolangma in the 1920s?
A. Poorly equipped but daring. B. Physically strong and fashionable.
C. Environmentally friendly and creative. D. Economically disadvantaged but romantic.
9. What can we learn about Mount Qomolangma in paragraph 5?
A. A rock wall there has been removed. B. A park is planned to be built there.
C. It inspired several famous books. D. It is easier to climb nowadays.
10. How does Will Cockrell describe Mount Qomolangma in his book?
A. It has become a free tourist attraction.
B It is less attractive to experienced climbers.
C. Sending people to its summit has become a big business.
D. Climbing it is becoming accessible to common people.
11. What is Mr. Cockrell’s attitude to the current practices on Mount Qomolangma?
A. Optimistic. B. Objective. C. Disapproving. D. Concerned.

Robert Campbell, a 68-year-old retired teacher from Glasgow, has lived with type 2 diabetes (糖尿病) for a decade. Recently, worrying blurriness in his vision pushed him to seek a screening (筛查) for diabetic retinopathy — a diabetes-related eye disease that causes blindness. Traditionally, he would have faced a long wait for a specialist appointment within Scotland’s National Health Service.
His local clinic, however, was part of a new pilot program using an AI-powered platform for eye disease called “RetinaScan AI”. The process was simple: a staff member took a photograph of Robert’s retina (视网膜). Within minutes, the system provided an automated assessment, detecting subtle signs of the disease with remarkable accuracy. This initiative effectively solved the traditional bottleneck, bringing expert-level screening directly to the community.
The technology is built on deep learning. The AI was trained on hundreds of thousands of retinal images previously labeled by eye doctors. Through this process, it learned to identify critical indicators of diabetic eye disease with a consistency unaffected by human beings. Its primary role is screening: efficiently identifying healthy patients and flagging those, like Robert, who require urgent specialist care.
“Platforms like RetinaScan AI are game-changers,” explains Dr. Eleanor Reed, a consultant eye doctor. “They don’t replace our expertise; they enhance it. By handling a great deal of initial screening workload, they ensure that human specialists can focus their skills on complex diagnoses (诊断) and treatment planning, ultimately preventing preventable vision loss.”
The Glasgow pilot has already contributed to promising results. In its first six months the program successfully screened over 5,000 patients, cutting average wait times for screening from 12 weeks to just days. More importantly, it has accurately flagged hundreds of at-risk individuals, like Robert, for early intervention, demonstrating a meaningful impact on patient outcomes.
Robert Campbell’s story is just the first chapter. This pilot program paves the way for AI technology to expand globally, reaching millions who need these vital screenings.
12. What problem did Robert Campbell face before the AI program was introduced?
A. He could hardly afford the screening.
B. His local clinic lacked the necessary equipment.
C. He had to wait long for a specialist appointment.
D. He was found to have a rare diabetic eye disease.
13. What is the main advantage of “RetinaScan AI” according to the text?
A. It is part of a new pilot program.
B. It replaces the need for human doctors.
C. It provides immediate treatment for patients.
D. It offers accurate and more accessible screening in communities.
14. Why does Dr Eleanor Reed call AI platforms “game-changers”?
A. They manage initial screenings. B. They work like specialists.
C. They finally avoid vision loss. D. They treat complex diseases.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. What Could AI benefit Humans? B. How is AI Transforming Eye Care?
C. Is AI the Doctor’s Newest Assistant? D. Can AI Systems See More Than Doctors?

When I was four, my seven-year-old brother received a baseball mitt (棒球手套) for his birthday. Every night, as we went to sleep, I’d listen to him throwing a ball into the mitt over and over to soften the leather (皮革). When he was finally sleepy, he’d put the ball in the mitt, wrap (包裹) a rubber band around it, and put it under his pillow to shape the leather even more. I wanted a mitt too. But, back then, girls didn’t play sports; they played with dolls.
Now a thirty-year-old mother of three, I happened to see a notice in my local paper: “Women’s Slow-Pitch Softball League opens soon. Anyone interested, sign up at the recreation (娱乐) center.” I cut it out and set it on the kitchen counter. I looked at that notice on my counter every day. I thought of a thousand reasons I couldn’t play. But the idea of playing baseball stuck in my head and wouldn’t go away. Finally, I signed up at the recreation center. Then, the notice came to report to James Park on Monday night to begin practice.
On Monday, I walked through the park filled with women of all ages practicing at different diamonds It took me a while to find my team. They were all high-school girls, seventeen and eighteen years old! The coach wasn’t happy to see me. But I didn’t care. That first day, I never got a chance to bat (击球) or play the field. I just ran bases (跑垒) all night. The next morning, I could barely stand. I was still feeling hurt when I showed up to play the next week. The coach was surprised to see me. He had no idea how determined I was.
Every week, I showed up for practice. Every game, I spent the night sitting on the bench My husband asked me why I didn’t just forget about it, but I told him this was the only way I was ever going to get to play. If I stayed home, I’d never get a chance.

Why climb Mount Qomolangma? “Because it’s there,” George Mallory famously said.
B. It is less attractive to experienced climbers.
C. Sending people to its summit has become a big business.
D. Climbing it is becoming accessible to common people.
11. What is Mr. Cockrell’s attitude to the current practices on Mount Qomolangma?
A. Optimistic. B. Objective. C. Disapproving. D. Concerned.
A 9. D 10. C 11. B

In its first six months, the program successfully screened over 5,000 patients, cutting average wait times for screening from 12 weeks to just days.
C 13. D 14. A 15. B

下文“Lack of communication is the loudest complaint in most families. The answer to “Why won’t they listen to me?” may be simply “You’re not listening to them.” (缺乏沟通是大多数家庭中最强烈的抱怨。“他们为什么不听我说?”这个问题的答案可能很简单:“你没有在听他们说。”)”指出了沟通问题的核心在于双向倾听的缺失。A选项“Listen if you expect to be heard. (如果你期望别人能听你的想法,就要先去倾听)”作为本段小标题,精准概括了下文的核心观点——倾听是相互的,想要被理解先要理解他人,与下文“观点—阐释”关系。故选A项。
上文“Practice generosity by both giving and receiving. (通过给予和接受来实践慷慨)”提出了本段的核心建议——慷慨既包括给予也包括接受。C选项“Recognize that both actions are part of a loving relationship. (认识到这两种行为都是充满爱的关系的一部分)”承接上文,进一步阐释为何给予和接受都不可或缺——它们共同构成健康关系的基础。下文“If we only focus on giving without being able to accept, we limit our ability to truly connect with others. (如果我们只专注于给予而不能接受,我们就限制了自己与他人真正建立联系的能力)”则从反面强调了只会给予不会接受的弊端,与C选项形成“正面阐释—反面论证”的逻辑呼应。故选C项。
【18题详解】
上文“Take responsibility for what you communicate silently. More than our words, our tone of voice, body language, and facial expressions show how we feel. We have to listen to our tone of voice and look at ourselves in the mirror to assess how our feelings match our expressions. (为你无声传达的信息负责。比起言语,我们的语调、肢体语言和面部表情更能展示我们的感受。我们必须倾听自己的语调,照镜子评估自己的感受与表情是否一致)”强调了非语言沟通的重要性以及自我觉察的必要性。F选项“Loving words spoken with a forced smile don’t feel loving — they feel confusing. (带着勉强微笑说出的爱的话语并不让人感到被爱——它们让人感到困惑)”承接上文,具体举例说明当语言与非语言信息不一致时会给对方造成困扰,从而强化了上文“自我觉察”的重要性。故选F项。
【19题详解】
上文“Don’t try to solve problems for your loved ones. Caring for your family doesn’t mean taking charge of their problems, giving unsolicited (未经请求的) advice, or protecting them from their own emotions. (不要试图为你爱的人解决问题。关心家人并不意味着接管他们的问题、给出未经请求的建议,或保护他们免受自己情绪的困扰)”指出了关爱家人的正确方式——不是包办代替,而是尊重他们的独立性。G选项“Let them know their own strengths and allow them to ask you for help when they need it. (让他们了解自己的长处,并允许他们在需要时向你求助)”承接上文,给出了尊重家人独立性的具体做法——相信他们的能力,并在他们主动求助时提供支持,与上文形成“否定错误做法—肯定正确做法”的逻辑呼应。故选G项。
【20题详解】
上文“Acknowledge your errors to everyone. Saying you’re sorry when you hurt someone you love models humility (谦虚) and emotional integrity. (向所有人承认你的错误。当你伤害了你爱的人时说对不起,展现了谦逊和情感的正直)”指出了道歉的积极意义。E选项“You can demonstrate that no one is perfect, but everyone can learn at any age. (你可以证明没有人是完美的,但每个人在任何年龄都可以学习)”承接上文,补充了道歉所传递的另一个重要信息——不完美是人之常态,但成长永无止境。下文“Apologizing proves you can forgive yourself and makes it easier to forgive others. (道歉证明你能原谅自己,也让原谅他人变得更容易)”则进一步阐述了道歉带来的连锁反应——自我原谅和宽恕他人,与E选项共同构成道歉的多重价值。故选E项。

【答案】例文
Combating Food Wastage During the Spring Festival
Dear fellow students,
As we all know, the Spring Festival is a time for family gatherings and feasts, but it also brings serious food waste. During the holiday, many families cook more dishes than they can eat, and a large amount of leftover food is thrown away. Some people even order excessive food in restaurants to show hospitality, leading to huge waste.
Food waste not only wastes precious resources but also puts pressure on the environment. Moreover, many people around the world are still suffering from hunger. It’s our duty to value every grain of food.
Let’s take action now. First, we can plan the amount of food we need before cooking or ordering. Second, we should take leftovers home and eat them properly. Third, we can remind our relatives and friends to avoid food waste.
Let’s work together to make this Spring Festival more environmentally friendly and meaningful.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
During the last round of the last game of the season, the coach finally told me to go to center field.

After the game, a young man approached me and asked if I’d like to play for his team in Belize.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
During the last round of the last game of the season, the coach finally told me to go to center field. I was nervous. I was thirty-three years old, the oldest player on the team, and I was going to play for the first time. I was excited too. I ran to the center field. I was determined to show those high school girls what an “old girl” could do. The ball flew to center field and I caught it. I was excited. I ran to the base. “You have to run to the home base,” the coach shouted. I ran hard but I was too tired to get to the home base.
After the game, a young man approached me and asked if I’d like to play for his team in Belize. I nodded. The next day, I was on the way to Belize. I was going to play in my first real baseball game. I was a little nervous. I knew I could do it, though. The game started. I was determined to show those college students that aging didn’t mean I couldn’t play. I ran after every ball. By the end of the game, I had run after 11 balls. It was an amazing feeling.
