(2025·烟台二模)Today's virtual reality games and content can be absorbing, but they largely miss the mark when it comes to haptic (触觉的) feedback. Wouldn't it be cool to just feel an object and perceive the sensation of running your hand over rich fabric in VR?
That's what researchers at Northwestern University in Illinois are hoping to achieve with their new wearable, a tiny lightweight device that can go far beyond simply vibrating (震动) against your skin to deliver richer haptics using more advanced tech.
专题强化训练
“All existing haptic devices really just stick at the skin,”said John Rogers, the professor leading the design. “But human skin is receptive to much more complicated senses of touch. That's why we created a device that could apply forces to the skin in any direction—not just sticking but pushing, sliding and stretching. With it, we can finely control the complex sensation of touch in a fully programmable way.”
Powered by a rechargeable battery, the device uses Bluetooth to connect wirelessly with virtual reality headsets and smartphones. Its small size and energy efficiency allow it to be worn anywhere on the body or added to existing wearable tech.
专题强化训练
Depending on where the haptic is mounted—say, on the back of your hand or on a fingertip—the onboard device delivers information about whether you're moving quickly or slowly, and in which direction. That makes for more realistic motion tracking. It helps the sensory feedback component of VR experiences catch up to the realistic video we've come to expect when wearing a headset.
专题强化训练
Beyond enabling more engaging experiences, Rogers notes they can also assist with other novel applications. “If you run your finger along a piece of silk, it will slide faster than when you touch cotton fabric,”he said. “You can imagine shopping for clothes online and feeling the material.”In another trial, they changed the sound of music into physical touch, so a user could differentiate between tones and instruments by the direction of vibrations they were feeling from the wearable. This tech could also help visually disabled people find their way. Their device represents a transformative force across industries, unlocking vast commercial potentials.

(2025·镇江模拟)James Herriot was the pen name of James Alfred Wight, a British vet (兽医) and author whose tales of life as a country vet in the Yorkshire Dales have entertained readers worldwide for decades.
Born on 3 October 1916 in Sunderland, Wight's journey to becoming one of Britain's best-loved authors began with his graduation from Glasgow Veterinary College in 1939. After completing his studies, he returned to England to begin his career as a vet in Yorkshire, where he would practise for nearly half a century.
专题强化训练
Despite his early ambitions to become an author, Wight's demanding schedule as a rural vet left little time to write. It wasn't until 1965, at the age of 50 and with encouragement from his wife, Joan, that he began to seriously pursue his writing.
Wight's first attempts were met with rejection. However, a helpful suggestion from a publisher of writing in the first person, given that his stories were based on real-life experiences, led to his breakthrough. In 1970, under the pen name James Herriot, Wight published his first book If Only They Could Talk. After that, he launched many hugely popular books that would go on to sell some 60 million copies worldwide.
专题强化训练
His books paint a vivid picture of rural life, grasping the essence of the people, the animals, and the landscape with warmth, humour, and keen human observation. His sharp, often unique observations into the relationships between animals and their owners form a central theme in his work. And he reflects the changes in veterinary practice over the years, alongside shifts in agriculture and British society.
Even long after his books brought him fame and fortune, Wight continued his veterinary practice in Yorkshire, only retiring in the late 1980s. He passed away on 23 February 1995, leaving behind a rich legacy (遗产) of literature that continues to attract readers and inspires new generations of vets.

(2025·浙江强基联盟三模)When babies are exposed to a variety of faces, they become more adept in recognizing and appreciating diversity, which can help reduce biases and prejudices as they grow. This is according to neuroscientist Saskia B.J. Koch of the Donders Institute and Radboud University.
专题强化训练
Koch conducted her research using data from the Nijmegen longitudinal study. This study follows young people from infancy (婴儿期). First, the researchers looked at how frequently the teenagers had attended day care as babies. Then, the same youngsters were assigned the duty of playing a game when they reached the age of 17. In the game, they had to work with another person they couldn't see. Both players had the same goal:find an object on a gameboard. Only the 17-year-olds knew where the item was. The 17-year-olds had to communicate this location to each other without using words. They had to design communicative patterns that would assist the other person in locating the object. This could be accomplished, for example, by performing specific movements.
专题强化训练
The 17-year-olds were informed they were playing with a 5-year-old in one game and an adult in another, despite the fact that it was the same individual each time. Initially, the 17-year-olds adjusted their communicative patterns when they thought they were interacting with the child by placing more emphasis on their movements. How quickly they abandoned this pattern depended on how much time they spent in day care. The 17-year-olds who had come into contact with many different people as infants were more likely to get over a stereotype (刻板印象). They found out in the interaction that the “child” was also very good and then based their play on that.
专题强化训练
According to the researcher this means that babies who have had more diverse social interactions can more easily let go of a stereotype later in life. They are more sensitive to social interaction and can more quickly let go of the image they have in their minds of their peers. Koch says, “Gaining many diverse social experiences early in life allows us to adapt better to the needs of our partners in social interaction.”

Since 2018, honeybees have feasted on wildflowers across a remote Italian island called Giannutri every spring. But for the last four years, Lorenzo Pasquali had the unusual task of shutting the honeybee hives down and watching wild bees as they scrambled (争抢) to claim the flowers, racing for every drop of nectar (花蜜) in the absence of their domesticated rivals.

专题强化训练
Managed honeybees, often used in agriculture, and native bees feast on the same floral honey and pollens. Ecologists have long suspected that honeybees may be pushing wild bees to the margins, but carrying out experiments in these wild insects has turned out to be tricky. The results, recently published in the journal Current Biology, suggest that wild bee numbers alarmingly dropped. With the temporary removal of honeybees, nectar and pollen levels increased sharply, allowing wild bees to feed on nectar longer and altering their daily routines.
专题强化训练
The researchers designed a very clear experiment relating honeybees, flowers and wild bees. Beekeepers first brought honeybee queens to Giannutri to raise them in isolation. The island is part of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park, and in 2021, authorities asked Pasquali's advisor, entomologist Leonardo Dapporto of the University of Florence to investigate whether managed honeybees that were recently brought to the island might have an unexpected ecological consequence.
专题强化训练
The researchers tracked how often wild bees entered or exited plots of land, tracking how often they visited flowers, and how long they spent drinking nectar. Using delicate tubes, they also measured the volume of nectar available for the wild bees in presence or absence of honeybees. Wild bees on bigger islands and even in sensitive protected areas in mainland regions might be facing similar fates, if honeybees have been introduced without proper assessment, the team says. Wild bees face a range of threats, from habitat loss and climate change to pesticide exposure. But unlike many of these pressures, competition from honeybees is something humans can actively manage.
专题强化训练
As soon as Dapporto's team informed the national park about the results, the park immediately took action, stopping the practice of beekeeping starting this year. That makes the results even more impressive, Dapporto says, commending the quick action. “It's not logical to introduce managed species in an area where you want to preserve the flora and fauna (动植物群),” he adds.
