Russia is widely portrayed as the most alcohol-dependent country in the world. Critics of the country say that drinking is almost an inborn trait of the Russian people. However, there is more to the story.
The consumption of alcoholic beverages was unusual in ancient Russia. Before the adoption of Christianity in Russia in the 10th century, there were no vineyards (葡萄园) and therefore no wine. People only drank beverages with low alcohol content. Vodka, Russia’s national drink, was not a Russian invention. The liquid was originally a grape alcohol introduced from France in the late 14th century. The first Russian-made vodka appeared in the 15th century, and the drink remained relatively low in alcohol content until the mid-18th century.
There is contradictory information about Russians’ preference for alcohol in the 15th and 16th centuries. Some documents noted that Russians “indulge in excessive drinking whenever the occasion arises,” while others claimed that Russians “rarely drink wine.” The heaviest drinkers in medieval Europe were actually Germans. There were many sayings about their desire for alcohol, such as “drunk as a German.”
The Russian state played a significant role in the spread of alcohol consumption in the country. In the 19th century, the emperors began to establish a state monopoly (垄断), largely due to the rise of illegal production of low-quality vodka. Thus, only the government was permitted to produce the alcohol. This soon earned the state huge profits, but it also encouraged vodka consumption. The situation worsened when the industrial production of vodka began in the country, causing its prices to drop sharply and making it available to even low-income citizens.
Meanwhile, a powerful anti-alcohol movement started in the 19th century. Government policies were made and public organizations established to prevent the spread of alcoholism in the country. The movement continued over the years; however, the problem remains. Although Russia does not occupy first place when it comes to alcohol consumption per person, it is still close to the top.
36. What is the main purpose of the second paragraph in the passage?
A. To discuss the content of alcoholic drinks in ancient Europe
B. To highlight the French impact on Russians’ drinking habits.
C. To argue against the assumption that Russians are born drinkers.
D. To link Russians’ vodka consumption to their adoption of Christianity.
37. What do we know about vodka production?
A. Vodka production in Russia started in the 15th century.
B. The first vodka made from wheat was imported from France.
C. Germany was the biggest vodka producer in medieval Europe.
D. Russian people were encouraged to make their own vodka in the 19th century.
38. What does the underlined “This” in the fourth paragraph refer to?
A. The alcohol. B. The government.
C. The illegal production. D. The state monopoly.
39. How does the author conclude the passage in the last paragraph?
A. By providing further facts.
B. By summarizing the main ideas.
C. By raising a new problem.
D. By making a future prediction.

In 2007, Italian architect Stefano Boeri noticed that the tall buildings under construction in the Dubai desert were all covered in glass, ceramic and metal. These materials reflected sunlight and heated the air and ground. This observation inspired his design for two tall buildings in Milan, Italy. “Suddenly, it occurred to me to create two biological towers covered not with glass, but with leaves,” he told the BBC. Boeri’s idea led to the world’s first “vertical (垂直的) forest”, called Bosco Verticale.
Completed in October 2014, the award-winning project has two residential towers. They are home to 800 trees, 4,500 shrubs and 20,000 other plants from 100 different species. These plants release water vapor and block some of the sunlight, helping keep people inside up to 3 degrees cooler.
The plants grow in planters on balconies (阳台) that extend 3.35 meters from the buildings. To make sure they could grow well, Boeri and the engineering studio Arup carried out a detailed study to choose the right species. They looked at the specific needs of each plant, such as how much sunlight it needed. For example, evergreens were placed on the southwest side, while deciduous (落叶的) trees were put on the northwest side, according to Stefano Boeri Architetti.
Although the planting was successful, some concerns remain. The trees and the soil needed tosupport them add extra weight to the buildings. This requires a more complex structure made with more concrete. Also, the plants must be cared for by a professional team. The team is responsible for watering, pruning (修剪) and pest (害虫) control to keep them healthy.
Despite these challenges, adding greenery to buildings supports the idea of “living buildings” that can breathe, cool themselves and help the environment. Since its opening, Bosco Verticale has inspired a wave of plant-filled architecture that responds to two major issues today: global warming and mental health. For example, in Belgium, Callebaut’s Hospiwood 21 is a hospital that uses greenery to reduce patient stress and support recovery.
40. What phenomenon is pointed out in paragraph 1?
A. Tall buildings in deserts are rare.
B. The idea of vertical forest isn’t practical.
C. Traditional building materials are expensive.
D. Present building designs aren’t environment- friendly.
41. What were Stefano Boeri and the studio Arup trying to do?
A. Choose the right plants. B. Decide the construction sites.
C. Develop the plant species. D. Keep the temperature inside unchanged.
42. What can be inferred about the future of ‘vertical forest’?
A. The idea will disappear.
B. The idea is to slow down city development.
C. The idea will be applied more to city construction.
D. The idea will be widely denied by the design professionals.
43. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Forest-covering cities. B. Towering with green.
C. Famous Italian architect. D. Environment-friendly plants.

Humans are undeniably creatures of habit. So when sudden, unexpected plot twists pull the metaphorical rug from beneath our feet, it can sometimes feel impossible to regain our footing. No matter how well we plan and try to stick to the script (剧本), there are always curveballs. After reading Plot Twist, one thing is certain: change is constant.
Plot Twist is a personal guide to surviving life’s curveballs. Firestone is a therapist who, throughout her career and life experience, has witnessed various examples of people’s talking out their grief, loss and pain. She’s also observed how they recover through resilience (适应力), transformation and hope.
This is what makes her work easy to understand — she shows things as experiencers, not just from literary perspectives. Sharing her own stories, as well as the hard-won wisdom of people who have been sideswiped by odds, Jana applies a therapist’s lens to learning to survive and eventually thrive during the most challenging days of our lives.
What is particularly useful is the list of “Things to Consider” at the end of each chapter. If you have a friend or family member who needs some guidance, the “Things to Consider” could help you understand what they may be experiencing and provide solutions to help ease their pain. They include advice such as: Break the habit of living in fast forward or, say, rewind. Such hints would be helpful when experiencing loss, but even if you are not facing any difficulties, advice that Firestone suggests can be applied to everyday life.
If you are seeking for a read about a number of heartfelt issues, Plot Twist is definitely a great place to start!
44. What does the underlined word “curveballs” in paragraph 1 refer to?
A. Delayed schedules. B. Stressful tasks.
C. Unavoidable complaints. D. Unexpected outcomes.
45. What is the major advantage of Firestone’s work over others’ according to the writer?
A. It analyzes life from a literary perspective. B. It is filled with first-hand life guidance.
C. It offers a range of versions to readers. D. It is written with psychological theories.
46. Who will mostly benefit from “Things to Consider”?
A. Readers interested in literary skills. B. Health carers learning first-aid knowledge.
C. Helpers solving difficulties for others. D. Therapists working on heart diseases.
47. Where is the text most probably taken from?
A. A reading checklist. B. A book review.
C A writer’s biography. D. A psychological essay.
D
Languages are like living organisms, developing over time. Charles Darwin himself noted the similarities. “The formation of different languages and of distinct species,” he writes in The Descent of Man, “are parallel (平行的).”
Now, new research in Nature Ecology & Evolution shows that the similarity runs deeper. Islands, long recognized as drivers of biological diversity (多元化), are just as much engines of linguistic (语言学的) diversity. Drawing on a database of languages from more than 13,000 inhabited (有人居住的) islands, the study shows that some of the same patterns hold true in both life and language.
In 1967, biologists proposed that the number of plant and animal species on any given island depends largely on two factors: its size and its distance from the mainland. The larger the island, the closer to continents, the more species it has. In line with the first principle, Lindell Bromham, leader of the study, and her colleagues found that the number of languages on an island increases with area. As for the second, they didn’t find a direct relationship. This is probably because, while plants and animals only come to islands by chance, humans do it on purpose.
Island languages tend to have far fewer phonemes (音位) than mainland ones. Perhaps these languages lose phonemic diversity in the same way that populations lose genetic diversity when they separate from the mainland. Another possibility is that in faraway populations, there are not many neighbouring languages to mix, so speakers don’t need as many. Yet another difference between island languages and species is that plants and animals are going extinct at a worrying speed, with 50 percent of endangered species living on islands. Languages are also in danger, but based on this new study, island languages are no more endangered than those on the mainland.
Nevertheless, Bromham says that protecting island languages is crucial.“We want to highlight how amazing it is that we have all these different solutions to human communication.Any language loss is a loss for all of us,” she says.
48. The reason for the indirect relationship between language and distance to mainland is ________.
A. islands’ diversified races
B. species’ accidental death
C. human’s intentional (有意的) arrival
D. languages’ unlimited spread
49. What is the feature (特点) of island languages compared with the mainland ones?
A. Globally spread. B. Highly endangered.
C. Linguistically (语言的) mixed. D. Phonemically reduced.
50. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Island languages are endangered.
B. Island languages are underdeveloped.
C. Islands are the laboratories of biodiversity (生物多样性) .
D. Islands are the engines of language and life.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C 和 D 四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
A
Russia is widely portrayed as the most alcohol-dependent country in the world.
【答案】36. C 37. A 38. D 39. A
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了俄罗斯并非天生就是酗酒国家,并介绍了其酒精消费的历史、原因及现状。
【36题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“The consumption of alcoholic beverages was unusual in ancient Russia. The first Russian-made vodka appeared in the 15th century, and the drink remained relatively low in alcohol content until the mid-18th century.(在古俄罗斯,饮用酒精饮料并不常见。
根据第二段“The first Russian-made vodka appeared in the 15th century, and the drink remained relatively low in alcohol content until the mid-18th century.(俄罗斯制造的第一批伏特加出现在15世纪,直到18世纪中期,这种酒的酒精含量仍然相对较低)”可知,俄罗斯的伏特加生产始于15世纪。故选A。
【38题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段“In the 19th century, the emperors began to establish a state monopoly (垄断), largely due to the rise of illegal production of low-quality vodka. Thus, only the government was permitted to produce the alcohol.(19世纪,皇帝们开始建立国家垄断,主要是由于非法生产劣质伏特加的兴起。因此,只有政府被允许生产这种酒)”可知,只有政府被允许生产这种酒,这很快为国家赚取了巨额利润,但同时也鼓励了伏特加的消费。所以this指代的是“国家垄断”。故选D。
【39题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Meanwhile, a powerful anti-alcohol movement started in the 19th century. Government policies were made and public organizations established to prevent the spread of alcoholism in the country. The movement continued over the years; however, the problem remains. Although Russia does not occupy first place when it comes to alcohol consumption per person, it is still close to the top.(与此同时,一场强大的反酒精运动在19世纪开始。政府制定了政策,建立了公共组织,以防止酗酒在该国的蔓延。多年来,这场运动一直在继续;然而,问题依然存在。尽管俄罗斯的人均酒精消费量并非第一,但仍接近榜首)”可知,作者先介绍反酒精运动的举措,再通过提供俄罗斯人均饮酒量的实际情况这一事实来收尾。故选A。
B

【答案】48. C 49. D 50. D

【答案】Dear Jim,
I am writing in response to your letter where you complained about having difficulty making time for sports because of your heavy academic workload. It is not unusual for teenagers to feel this way, and here are some suggestions that you might find useful.
To begin with, try fitting physical activities into your daily routine. For example, instead of taking a bus, you can bike to school, which can help boost your energy and sharpen your focus at the beginning of the day. What’s more, consider using sports or other hobbies as a reward after finishing a study task, in which case you’ll not only enjoy your free time more but also stay motivated to study efficiently.
Finding a balance is the key and I hope my advice proves helpful
Yours,
Li Hua
