Marianne North was an early female explorer, naturalist and painter. She traveled around the world, painting plants, people and places. She left an extraordinary legacy behind.
Marianne looked after and traveled with her father for much of her life. After his death in1869, Marianne, financially independent at the age of forty, set off alone to explore and paint the world.
During her long artistic journey around the world, Marianne displayed impressive courage and determination. Faced with numerous challenges in her pursuits, Marianne proved unaffected and would laugh it off. In Italy, when her landlord pretended he had no rooms for them except those on the fifth floor, Marianne fearlessly responded with “so to the fifth we went, and gained all the better view”.
Marianne’s most famous supporter was Charles Darwin. Darwin’s power of bringing out other people’s best points extended to Marianne whom he advised to see and paint the Australian vegetation (植被) which was unlike that of any other country. Taking Darwin’s advice as a royal command she went at once and eagerly returned in 1881 to sit with Darwin and his children under a shady tree to look closely at her paintings together.
Marianne’s paintings and writing give detailed information on the location, habitat and uses of many of the plants she painted. On her travels, she collected and discovered plants that were new to botanical science at the time. A pitcher plant she painted in Borneo, for example, was unknown to science at the time she painted it. When botanists saw it, the painting caused great excitement. Through her art, she sought to inspire and educate people about the natural world.
4. What made Marianne’s traveling around the world at forty possible?
A. Personal fame. B. Family support.
C. Financial freedom. D. Darwin’s advice.
5. What does the author show by mentioning the event in Italy?
A. Marianne’s painting skills. B. Marianne’s sense of humor.
C. Marianne’s physical strength. D. Marianne’s positive attitude.
6. How did Marianne react to Darwin’s suggestion?
A. She followed it immediately. B. She considered it a great honor.
C. She discussed it with his children. D. She improved her techniques first.
7. What can we infer about Marianne’s painting of the pitcher plant?
A. It was her most famous work. B. It helped identify a new species.
C. It was painted to attract botanists. D. It proved her exceptional painting skills.

New research challenges the widespread belief that artificial intelligence (AI) is driving a major rise in global greenhouse gas emissions. Scientists from the University of Waterloo and the Georgia Institute of Technology analyzed U.S. economic data alongside estimates of how frequently AI tools are used across different industries. Their aim was to understand what might happen to the environment if AI adoption increases along its current path.
According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, 83 percent of the nation’s economic activity relies on petrol, coal and natural gas. These fuels release greenhouse gases when burned. The researchers noted that total energy use from AI in the U.S. matched the electricity consumption of Iceland, yet this amount remained insignificant when viewed at national or global levels.
“It is important to note that the increase in energy use is not going to be uniform. It’s going to be felt more in the places where electricity is produced to power the data centers,” said Dr Juan Moreno-Cruz, a professor at the School of Environment, Enterprise and Development at the University of Waterloo and Canada Research Chair in Energy Transitions. “If you look at that energy from the local perspective, that’s a big deal because some places could see double the amount of electricity output and emissions. But at a larger scale, AI’s use of energy won’t be noticeable.”
“For people who believe that the use of AI will be a major problem for the climate and think we should avoid it, we’re offering a different perspective,” Moreno-Cruz added. “The effects on climate are not that significant, and we can use AI to develop green technologies or to improve existing ones.”
To develop their findings, environmental economists Moreno-Cruz and Dr Anthony Harding reviewed a variety of economic sectors, the types of jobs within those sectors, and the share of tasks that could potentially be performed by AI. Moreno-Cruz and Harding intend to apply the same approach to additional countries in order to understand how AI adoption may affect environmental outcomes across different regions of the world.
8. What is the primary goal of the research?
A. To promote the development of green AI. B. To measure energy consumption worldwide.
C. To warn about AI’s growing energy demands. D. To assess AI’s potential environmental effects.
9. What can be said about AI energy consumption in the U.S.?
A. It contributes to petrol-based activities. B. It will soon reach the global emission target.
C. It has small influence at the national level. D. It exceeds Iceland’s electricity consumption.
10. What do researchers plan to do next?
A. Extend their research to more countries. B. Shift focus to AI’s economic advantages.
C. Develop AI applications to stop emissions. D. Reduce the energy use of AI in data centers.
11. Which of the following is the main idea of the text?
A. AI technology drives greenhouse gas emissions.
B. AI energy consumption urgently needs regulating.
C. Data centers emit more than previously estimated.
D. AI’s impact on climate is much smaller than believed.

Elaine recently bought a gorgeous stained-glass statement mirror on an online marketplace, and then she found she was rearranging her entire bedroom to match its luxurious aesthetic (美感) and color scheme. She didn’t have a bedroom redesign in her budget, but that wasn’t stopping her. Have you ever updated one thing in your home and suddenly found yourself with a laundry list of changes you want to make? This phenomenon is called the Diderot Effect.
The phenomenon got its name from French philosopher Denis Diderot. In 1769, Diderot penned an essay describing the receipt of a new dressing gown, which sparked a series of impulsive (易冲动的) purchases that sank him into debt — and thus lending his name to this psychological phenomenon.
This isn’t just a consequence of 18th-century behavior, though. The Diderot effect is alive and well today. Don’t be too hard on yourself if you fall victim to the Diderot effect. Psychotherapist Dr. Daryl Appleton says it’s a very human response, similar to the feeling when you put on brand-new clothes, but then wear your worn-out shoes — the mismatch is uncomfortable. What’s happening beneath the surface is partly neurological (神经学的). When we seek something new, our brain releases more dopamine, often called our “pleasure chemical” that drives desire. So, that rush you feel when you start fixing the things around the shiny new object is not just aesthetics; it’s brain chemistry. We’re born to long for novel things.
The Diderot Effect can show up anywhere from your closet to your career. Therapist Dr. Alfonso Ferguson says, “Often, what’s really happening underneath is a desire to feel in harmony with one’s space — to finally feel a sense of pride, peace, or even safety that may have been missing in other parts of life.” It’s not always a bad thing to want your space to progress with you. But if it starts to feel compulsive, it can be pretty difficult to escape the cycle. You’ll keep chasing the next upgrade.
12. What is the main purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To analyse reasons.
B. To make a comparison.
C. To lead in the topic.
D. To present viewpoints.
13. What is the motivation behind the Diderot Effect according to paragraph 3?
A. An attempt to escape stress from one’s work.
B. A desire to achieve harmony in one’s life.
C A rush to show off one’s wealth.
D. A biological urge to seek novelty.
14. What does the underlined word “compulsive” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Unrealistic.
B. Uncontrollable.
C. Adaptable.
D. Casual.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. When One New Thing Changes Everything
B. The Psychology Behind Chasing Harmony
C. How Our Daily Needs Help Fuel Endless Purchase
D. The Science of Holding Back Endless Consumption

I, a shy boy, was just a high school student, rushing home after endless SAT prep — America’s college admission battleground. Maria’s food stand sat on my daily route — she’d give me a smile, and I’d nod back. Those tiny moments made me feel less alone, even if we never spoke.
Mrs Gillian, my psychology teacher, would have understood the weight of greetings. One day, she shared her research with me. “People who greet guards perform better at work,” she said. “Shy students who practice talking to strangers become more confident.” She called it the “Hello Challenge” — earning points for simple acts like asking about someone’s day. Most classmates laughed it off, but something special stuck with me. I stared at an Oxford brochure hidden in my drawer. I’d dreamed of going to Oxford for years, but it was difficult for students like me to study there.
The next day, on a crowded morning train, I noticed an older man struggling with bags. Mrs Gillian’s voice echoed (回荡) in my head. So I said, “Long day already? Let me help you.” The man’s tired face softened into a smile. “Yes. Thank you, boy.” Suddenly, one bag burst open, papers flying everywhere. As I helped gather them, I froze — an Oxford University letterhead stared back at me. “You’re from Oxford?” I asked surprisingly. Adjusting his glasses, he smiled, “I’m Professor Wilson, English Department. You like Oxford?” I nodded, saying that it was my dream. Before parting, he handed me a business card and said, “Email me if you have questions about applying for a college.”
That night, I wrote an email to Professor Wilson. To my shock, he replied within days—pages of advice on applications. In the months that followed, we exchanged emails regularly. He treated me like a future college student.
Mrs Gillian noticed I’d been smiling more. “Taken the ‘Hello Challenge’ to heart?” she asked. “Something like that,” I smiled widely. Later on, I threw myself into studying, determined to make that dream come true.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I made it to Oxford’s admission office, holding Professor Wilson’s recommendation letter.

Taking Darwin’s advice as a royal command, she went at once and eagerly returned in 1881 to sit with Darwin and his children under a shady tree to look closely at her paintings together.

New research challenges the widespread belief that artificial intelligence (AI) is driving a major rise in global greenhouse gas emissions Scientists from the University of Waterloo and the Georgia Institute of Technology analyzed U.S. economic data alongside estimates of how frequently AI tools are used across different industries.
10 What do researchers plan to do next?
【答案】8. D 9. C 10. A 11. D

C. A rush to show off one’s wealth.
D. A biological urge to seek novelty.
14. What does the underlined word “compulsive” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Unrealistic.
B. Uncontrollable.
C. Adaptable.
D. Casual.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. When One New Thing Changes Everything
B. The Psychology Behind Chasing Harmony
C. How Our Daily Needs Help Fuel Endless Purchase
D. The Science of Holding Back Endless Consumption
【答案】12. C 13. D 14. B 15. A
根据第三段的句子“When we seek something new, our brain releases more dopamine, often called our ‘pleasure chemical’ that drives desire. So, that rush you feel when you start fixing the things around the shiny new object is not just aesthetics; it’s brain chemistry. We’re born to long for novel things.(当我们寻求新事物时,大脑会释放更多多巴胺,这种物质常被称为“快乐化学物质”,它会驱动欲望。所以,当你开始为闪亮的新物品搭配周边事物时感受到的冲动,不仅仅是审美需求,更是大脑化学反应的结果。我们生来就渴望新奇事物)”可知,狄德罗效应的动机是寻求新奇事物的生理冲动。故选D项。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段“But if it starts to feel compulsive, it can be pretty difficult to escape the cycle. You’ll keep chasing the next upgrade.(但如果这种感觉开始变得compulsive,就很难摆脱这个循环。你会不断地追求下一次升级)”可知,如果这种感觉变得“compulsive”,就会难以逃脱循环,不断追求下一次升级,暗示失去控制的状态。因此“compulsive”意为“无法控制的”,与Uncontrollable意义一致。故选B项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据全文内容,特别是第一段的句子“Have you ever updated one thing in your home and suddenly found yourself with a laundry list of changes you want to make? This phenomenon is called the Diderot Effect.(你有没有过这样的经历:家里更新了一件东西,突然发现自己有一长串想要做的改变?这种现象被称为狄德罗效应)”可知,文章主要讲一件新事物如何引发连锁变化,即狄德罗效应。A项“When One New Thing Changes Everything(当一件新事物改变一切)”准确概括了这一核心内容,既形象又全面。故选A项。

【答案】参考范文:
Dear Jane,
I’m writing to suggest a theme-based slogan on “English Learning”: Unlock Your World with English!
I believe this slogan captures the value of learning English. First, the word “Unlock” shows English is not only a subject but also a key that opens doors to new opportunities. Besides, “Your World” speaks directly to each student, making the message feel personal and inspiring. It reminds us that English can connect us to people, cultures, and ideas beyond our surroundings.
The slogan is short, positive, and easy to remember, which would encourage us to engage more actively with English learning. Thank you for considering my suggestion.
Yours,
Li Hua

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

【答案】参考范文:
I made it to Oxford’s admission office, holding Professor Wilson’s recommendation letter. The waiting room was filled with polished students from fancy schools. I felt like a fraud. When my name was called, I took a deep breath and walked in — and there Professor Wilson was. He sat at the end of the table, adjusting his glasses exactly like on the train. He gave me the smallest wink, and suddenly, I wasn’t terrified anymore. The interview flew by, feeling more like a conversation than an exam. As I left the room, I hoped I’d get the chance to see Professor Wilson again — not as an interviewer, but as his student.
The good news came faster than I had expected that afternoon. I walked out with an acceptance letter in my trembling hands. Professor Wilson caught up with me in the hallway and placed a hand on my shoulder. “I knew it the moment we met on that train,” he said quietly. “You just needed someone to believe in you. It’s quite lucky that you’ll become my student.” I thought about Mrs Gillian’s lesson — human connections are daily exercise for the heart. She was right. One “hello” on a crowded train had led me here. Sometimes, the smallest moments really do change something.
