Group discussions are everywhere during our
learning journey, yet not everyone knows how to make the most
of them.

Group discussions are a wonderful way for us to increase
our knowledge. When we sit together to talk about a subject,
we get to hear different ideas that we might not have thought
of on our own. Moreover, they help us improve our social
skills. We learn how to communicate, work together, and build
relationships with our classmates.
However, group discussions do have their challenges. One
common problem is that some students talk for a long time,
leaving little room for others to speak. Another problem is that
some students might not listen carefully to others. They are too
busy thinking about what they want to say next, which leads to
misunderstandings. Also, sometimes the group ends up talking
about something completely unrelated to the topic.
To solve these problems, first, set clear rules at the start of
the discussion. Decide how long each person can talk and make
sure that everyone gets a turn. Second, practice active listening.
When someone is speaking, look at him or her and nod to
show you’re following. Third, choose a “monitor”—someone
who watches the time and discussion. If the group starts going
off the topic, the monitor should stop the conversation gently.#7
