We often face the following situations in our daily life:
· The woman next door plays her piano after 12 o’clock at night.
· The family across the street never cleans up their yard. The rubbish blows into your yard.
· The man next door always parks his car in front of your drive.
Have things like this ever happened to you? If so, you may ask yourself, “Who are these people? Why are they doing these things to me?”
These days, many people don’t know their neighbours. Sometimes we share a friendly smile or say hello, but lots of people don’t even know their neighbors’ names! When you don’t know someone, it’s easy to be angry when something has happened that you think is unfair. You think, “Maybe they like to make me angry,” or “Maybe they do it on purpose.” Believe it or not, your neighbors probably don't mean to make you angry. Often, they don’t even know that they’re making you feel angry. So before you take unusual steps to fix the problem, you should discuss it with them first.
When you move towards your neighbors, you should talk to them in a friendly way. Praise their children to make them feel good. Then explain the situation. And if you can think of a simple way to solve the problem, suggest it.
If talking doesn’t work, ask another person to help. This person can listen to both sides of the story and help you and your neighbour solve the problem.
Finally, sometimes it’s a good idea to avoid the problem. Depending on the problem, it might be best to just stay out of your neighbor’s way.

A. To ask some questions. B. To come to the subjects.

In today’s world, applying to (申请) colleges, even jobs, pay more attention to volunteering. You need to show how much you’ve helped the community. This is great! Iknow some people who are quick to talk about how they help others. Smiling big and proud, they tell me about the number of volunteer hours. But sometimes I find out that they don’t even know the mission (使命) of the group! Although this only happened twice, it really troubled me. So I start to think that maybe this isn't the best way to think about helping others.
▲ It should be more about making your community better, and learning what it means to be a good person in our world. You should think about helping others, not about how you’ll benefit (得益).
The best way to fix this is to change what colleges and jobs ask for. Instead of asking “how many hours have you helped”, they should ask “how have you made things better for others”. They should ask people to explain, and look for people who really care and try hard instead of just counting the hours they’ve spent.
We, the students, can also help fix this problem. Try to forget about the hours, because they’re not important. Choose groups you care about and learn about the people you’re helping. Don’t help because you have to, but because it’s the right thing to do as a person. Next time you hear friends talking about how many hours they’ve helped, tell them that numbers don’t change the world.
61. Which of the following can be put in “ ▲ ”?
A. Why don’t you try volunteering?
B. Helping others shouldn’t be only about numbers.
C. More and more people are helping the community.
D. Maybe you know why to help others.
62. To fix the problem talked about in the passage, colleges and jobs should look for people who ________.
A. spend the longest time in volunteering B. benefit from helping others
C. really make a difference D. learn about the group
63. What’s the writer’s attitude (态度) towards the number of volunteer hours?
A. He hates it very much. B. He agrees with it strongly.
C. He is careful about it. D. He doesn’t really care.

A few years after Dad died, my 82-year-old mum moved away from the family farm near Almonte into her first apartment, which meant it would be easier for her to shop for daily goods. We were also worried that she was living alone and hoped this move would really widen her social circle (社交圈).
As she and I packed her things, Mum shared with me all kinds of stories about her and my dad’s life. Her eyes were shining and I listened with great interest.
Then we drove to the town, leaving the unwanted things at Almonte’s secondhand store, where they could be resold and the money would go to charity.
A local gentleman, who had bought one of Mum’s old suitcases, found a black-and-white negative (底片) in an envelope, with the word “Daddy” written in pencil on the front. Knowing that this film certainly meant something to someone, he took it to the Almonte Gazette, trying to find its rightful owner through the newspaper.
A week later, a big photo of my dad appeared in our local paper, with a story to accompany it. Readers answered at once; they knew “Daddy” well—it was their uncle,brother-in-law, neighbour, friend, favourite bus driver…
So Mum and I went to the Almonte Gazette right away to claim our film. We thanked the staff and also called the editor to express our heartfelt thanks for reuniting (重逢) Mum, Daddy and me.
What a warming act! It meant the world to us. Mum finally moved into a nursing home. She passed away in November 2018, at 98, and until then hardly a day went by that she did not look at, in her word, “that famous picture of Daddy”, on her bedside table.

Tom Brown, an office worker, lives in New York,USA. He inherited (继承) $1,000,000when he was 23 years old. He didn’t feel happy at all. His college friends were looking for their first jobs, but he didn’t have to. Tom decided to keep living a simple life like everyone else. He didn’t tell any of his friends and gave $100,000 of his money to a charity that helped poor children to live better lives. Today he is 36, he still wears cheap shoes and clothes and owns a small car only, but he is much happier.
Up to now Tom has helped 15 children from poor countries all over the world, $200 a month for each. The child does not receive the money in cash. The money pays for the child’s school fees, food, medical care and clothing. Tom receives a report each year on the child’s progress. They can write to each other, but usually the children do not speak English.
When Tom first heard about these children, he wanted to help them. “It was not anything special,” he said. “Until I had the chance to go to these countries and meet the children I was helping, I did not know anything about the type of life they had.”
Once Tom went to meet a little girl in Africa. He said that the meeting was very exciting. “When I met her, I felt very, very happy,” he said. “I saw that the money was used for a very good plan. It brought me closer to the child in a way that giving money alone cannot.” “I want to do everything I can. I will go on helping those children in need,” he added.
