阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
Where to Eat in Rome Like a Local
In Rome, travelers often eat at popular restaurants that offer English menus. But if you want to experience the real taste of the city, follow the locals and find great food in quieter corners.
Santo Palato
Since opening in 2017, Santo Palato has been known for both classic Roman dishes and creative new ones. In March, it moved from a small place in San Giovanni to a bigger one in Porta Metronia, with a modern design that includes bright-orange walls and a glass-walled kitchen. Despite its new look, the easy, old-school feel is still there, with wooden chairs and comfortable tables.
Retrobotega
With its open kitchen, it’s one of the most exciting dining places in the city. The menu includes both classic dishes and creative ones. With over 90 wines (葡萄酒)available by the glass, it’s a great place for wine lovers. For a more relaxed experience, head to retrovino, the restaurant’s wine bar.
Enoteca L’ Antidoto
Hidden in a quiet street in Tastevere, this small wine bar offers just 16 seats. Inside, guests enjoy a relaxed atmosphere (氛围) with soft music. The young chef, Mirko Pelosi, creates a menu of small, creative plates inspired by Italian and other dishes. The wine list focuses on natural wines. And don’t miss the smoked fish, which pairs perfectly with the wines.
Fischio
Next to an old funfair, Fischio is a laid-back bar which serves some of the best coffee in Rome. It’s a favorite place for locals, offering a mix of a café and a neighborhood hangout. Spend the afternoon over a cup of coffee. It’s a great place to unwind and enjoy the Roman life.

A. It moves repeatedly. B. It has an old-school style.
C It is crowded in March. D. It serves hard-to-find wines.
2. What are tourists advised to do at Enoteca L’ Antidoto?
A. Watch a music show. B. Buy the fresh seafood.
C. Try the smoked fish. D. Pick some local grapes.
3. Where will you go if you want to taste great coffee in Rome?
A. Fischio. B. Santos Palato. C. retrobotega. D. Enoteca L’ Antidoto.
In Washington, D. C., early in the morning, Stephanie Haley, a volunteer, is walking through the city’s downtown, looking for birds that might have collided (碰撞) with windows. On the sidewalk next to an office building, there is an olive-green songbird. It’s an Acadian flycatcher, no doubt on its way to Central or South America when it hit a window.
This scene is repeated across the country. Each year, up to a billion birds are killed by window collisions in the US. Most of these birds are migrating (迁徙), flying at speeds of up to 30 miles per hour when they hit the glass. For birds, glass — whether clear or reflective — presents a major danger, and this is especially true in cities, where buildings are full of glass.
Each night during the migration season, hundreds of millions of birds take to the skies, flying through the night to take advantage of the evening’s cool, stable air. They navigate with the help of the moon and the stars, and come down in the morning to rest. That’s when they can meet glass, which they don’t know how to avoid. If it’s clear, they think they can fly through it. If it’s reflective, they can mistake the reflections for real trees and sky. These collisions happen mostly near the ground, not high in the air.
The issue gained national attention after hundreds of birds died in one night at McCormick Place in Chicago in 2023. This event led to a meeting of experts, who formed the Bird collision Prevention Alliance. Their goal is to find better ways to protect birds from glass. In Chicago, using special films on windows can reduce (减少) bird collisions by up to 95%.
Homeowners can also help by treating their windows. By taking small actions, like covering windows, people can reduce bird deaths at home. These efforts may not fix the problem entirely, but they are a step in the right direction for saving millions of birds.
4 Where does the volunteer find the Acadian flycatcher?
A. At an office. B. On the driveway. C. At her house. D. On the sidewalk.
5. What is the main reason birds collide with windows?
A. They are attracted to foods. B. They are confused by the lights.
C. They fail to recognize glass. D. They fly too high while migrating.
6. How do the birds fly at night during the migration season?
A. They use the moon and stars. B. They look for trees in the country.
C. They follow the lights in cities. D. They turn to other animals for help.
7. Which best describes the act of applying special films to windows to save birds?
A. Difficult. B. Workable. C. Pointless. D. Expensive.
The Sahara Desert is one of the driest places on Earth, receiving only about 3 inches of rainfall each year. This is just one-tenth of what cities like Chicago experience. However, scientists from the University of Illinois Chicago predict (预测) that the Sahara could become significantly wetter in the latter half of the 21st century.
Their findings suggest that the Sahara could receive up to 75% more rainfall compared with its historical average. The researchers also project that southeastern and south-central Africa might receive more rain, especially under extreme climate (气候) conditions.
“Changing rainfall patterns (模式) will affect billions of people, both in and outside Africa,” said lead author Thierry Ndetatsin Taguela, a climate expert. “We have to start planning to face these changes, from flood management to drought-resistant crops.”
Taguela pointed out that understanding how rising temperatures impact rainfall is important for developing strategies to deal with these changes. In the study, he used 40 climate models to predict summer rainfall across Africa in the second half of the 21st century (2050 — 2099) compared with the historical period (1965 — 2014).
The models showed that rainfall over Africa will generally increase by the end of the 21st century. Notably, the Sahara Desert is expected to receive 75% more rainfall, southeastern Africa will see a 25% increase, and south-central Africa will experience a 17% rise in rainfall.
“It is surprising for the Sahara to nearly double its historical rainfall,” Taguela said. “But while most models agree on the overall trend of wetter conditions, there’s still uncertainty about how much the rainfall will actually increase. Upgrading these models is key to making reliable predictions.”
For the most part, these projected changes are related to the effects of climate change, as higher temperatures help the atmosphere hold more moisture, which in turn leads to rainfall. At the same time, changes in wind patterns also play a part in affecting rainfall.
8 What did the research show about the Sahara Desert?
A. It would remain the driest place. B. It would turn into a liveable land.
C. It would experience less rainfall. D. It would become wetter than ever.
9. What did Taguela want to stress in paragraph 3?
A. Climate change is an avoidable issue. B. Extreme climate conditions are a repeat.
C. We have to prepare for changes in rainfall. D. Rainfall patterns are usually unbelievable.
10. What can we know about the climate models in the study?
A. They are correct and true. B. They need improving.
C. They erase public doubts. D. They make little sense.
11. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The forces behind rainfall. B. The changes in climate patterns.
C. The predicted rise in rainfall. D. The impact of clouds on rainfall.
Despite the well-known benefits for children’s health, one in ten parents of preschoolers say that their children play outside just once a week or less. This is the finding of a survey of 710 parents of children aged 1 to 5, conducted in August by researchers from the University of Michigan Health C. S. Mott Children’s Hospital.
The survey showed that outdoor and imaginative play remain common, but screen-based activities are quickly catching up as a daily fixture of children’s lives. Nearly one-third of parents surveyed reported that their children regularly take part in “media play”, such as video games, while three in five said their children watch videos every day.
“Outdoor play is essential for young children’s learning and development,” said Sarah Clark, co-director of the survey. “Our report suggests that many families could support healthier development by encouraging a wider variety of play experiences. For example, parents could take their children to the park before shopping or use a short walk to play a game with jumping.”
The survey also pointed out that digital activities have become a common part of children’s daily lives. Most parents of preschoolers admitted (承认) that they often hand a phone or tablet to their children in the car, at restaurants or in public places when they would like them to be occupied (忙碌). While phones and tablets are convenient, Clark suggested other options, such as setting up a “quiet kit” with fun books, or small toys that children can use when on the go.
Additionally, the survey found that parental anxiety plays a role in limiting (限制) outdoor play. Four out of ten parents said they feel nervous when their children go too far or climb too high. While safety concerns are understandable, Clark stressed that a little independence helps children grow, encouraging curiosity and creativity. “Outdoor play doesn’t need to be perfect or educational to be beneficial,” she added. “Parents just need to make time and space for their children to play freely.”
12. What is the percentage of parents surveyed saying their children watch videos daily?
A. 33%. B. 40%. C. 50%. D. 60%.
13. What does the underlined word “essential” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Harmful. B. Important. C. Challenging. D. Responsible.
14. What is probably Clark’s suggestion for parents?
A. Let children lead their own play. B. Allow children to play in groups.
C. Set up more screen time activities. D. Limit playtime for safety reasons.
15. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Parents’ Role in Children’s Screen Time B. The Influence of Digital Games on Students
C. Preschoolers: More Outdoors, Less Screens D. Outdoor Games: A Growing Sense of Unease

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之成为一篇完整的短文。
Gina was a senior high school student, who often hosted school activities. Everyone praised her excellent speaking skills. One day, she saw a local TV station holding a “Teenage Host” selection. The winner would be invited to host a children’s program once a week. Gina thought it was a great opportunity to show her skills, so she signed up.
During the interview, Gina responded to all the questions clearly and even told a funny story to make the judges laugh. However, when the result came out, Gina was shocked — she didn’t make it. Unwilling to give up, she gathered up her courage to ask the chief judge, “Excuse me, could you tell me why I wasn’t selected?” The chief judge replied coldly, “You seem a bit overweight. It doesn’t meet our requirements.”
Gina felt angry after hearing that, but deep down, she knew she was heavier than many other girls of her age. Determined to change her image, she decided to lose weight. She searched online and found a “5+2 light fasting” method: eat normally on five days a week and only take in very few calories (热量) for the other 2 days. Gina made up her mind to try it, ignoring the potential risks.
On the first two days, Gina felt extremely hungry, causing her to fail to focus on what the teachers said in class. She often looked at the blackboard painfully, her mind recalling delicious food. Her classmates noticed something was wrong and asked her if she was sick. But Gina just made up excuses, saying she simply had a slight headache.
By the second week, the situation got worse. During a break, before Gina could say anything, she fell to the ground. Her classmates were frightened and immediately ran to tell their head teacher, Mr. David. Mr. David rushed over, picked her up carefully, and took her to the hospital at once. After the doctor’s timely care, Gina finally woke up.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题纸相应位置作答。
After being asked, Gina explained to David why she had acted this way.

【答案】After being asked, Gina explained to David why she had acted this way. Tears welled up in her eyes as she told him about the whole story. Gina also mentioned the light fasting method she’d been trying, admitting she’d ignored the possible risks just to slim down quickly. Her voice trembled with regret as she said, “I just wanted to prove I was good enough for the program.” Mr. David listened patiently, his expression softening with sympathy. He patted her shoulder gently and said,“Gina, your talent for hosting has nothing to do with your weight. What matters is your passion and skills, not your appearance.”
Hearing Mr. David’s words, Gina decided to accept her own figure. She realized that the judge’s shallow standard didn’t define her worth. After recovering, she stopped the unhealthy fasting and started eating balanced meals and doing moderate exercise to stay fit, not to meet others’ unfair expectations. Later, she joined the school’s broadcasting club, where she continued to shine with her excellent speaking skills. She even hosted a school charity show, which was a big success. This experience taught her that true confidence comes from accepting oneself, not chasing an unrealistic image of perfection.
