This year is special for China’s world of Math. It’s all because of one great woman—Wang Hong. Wang was born in 1991 in Guilin. Her parents were both middle school teachers. She showed an unusual talent for Math at an early age. When she was just five years old, she already finished first-grade Math and went straight to second grade.
Some people think talent makes life easy. But Wang’s path was far from smooth. In middle school, her grades were not good at first—she was not in the top 100. But she didn’t give up. She worked very hard, and later became one of the top ten students in her grade. At the age of sixteen, she entered Peking University and learned more about Math.
In 2011, Wang went to France to study. “I felt a little lost at that time,” the girl said. “I gave up on Math and studied architecture (建筑) for six months. Then I remembered how hard I had learned Math before. I only doubted myself because my classmates were all very smart.” Wang became confident again and returned to Math. She studied even harder and got her PhD at MIT.
This past February, Wang did something really amazing. She solved a century-old Math problem—the Kakeya conjecture (挂谷猜想). Mathematicians all over the world were so surprised and excited. Now, Wang is a professor at two great universities.

One day in autumn Squire Gordon, my master, went on a trip into town. John, my caretaker, went with him. I pulled the cart (马车). The weather was rainy and windy, but we travelled happily.
Gordon’s business took a long time. We didn’t leave until late afternoon. The wind was then much higher. My master said to John, “I have never been out in such a storm!” Mr Gordon and John could not see well in the rain.
We came to a wooden bridge. It was very nearly dark. We could just see that the water was over the middle of the bridge. But as that happened sometimes when the floods were out, master did not stop. The moment my feet touched the first part of the bridge, I felt sure there was something wrong. I dare not go forward, and I made a dead stop. “Go on, Beauty,” said my master, and he gave me a touch with the whip (鞭子), but I dare not move. He gave me a sharp cut and I jumped, but I dare not go forward.
“There’s something wrong, sir,” said John, and he got out and tried to lead me forward. “Come on, Beauty.” But I knew that the bridge was not safe.
Just then the man on the other side saw us.
“Hey! Halloo! Stop!” he cried.
“What’s the matter?” shouted my master.
“The bridge is broken in the middle, and part of it is carried away. If you go onto it, you’ll be into the river.”
“Thank you for saving us, Beauty!” said John. He gently turned me round to the right hand road by the river side. It grew darker and darker, quieter and quieter.
When we returned home the Squire told Mrs. Gordon, “Black Beauty saved our lives. He knew the bridge was dangerous.”
John took me to the stable(马厩). Oh! What a good supper he gave me that night! What a nice bed of straw! I was glad of it for I was tired.

①There is a lot of kitchen waste in every family every day. Most people throw it away, but some are thinking about how to turn this waste into treasure. In 2025, designers Cao Biru and Wang Yiqing noticed the problem during a community survey—70% of waste from homes was something like banana peels and coffee grounds (咖啡渣), which ended up in landfills (垃圾填埋场).
②To solve this problem, they spent 18 months creating a special 3D printer (打印机) called the FOODres. The idea was simple: help common people turn kitchen waste into useful things. The printer can process (加工) different kinds of food waste and make them into cups, bowls, or small boxes.
③This printer is run by AI and is easy to use. Everyone can use it simply, even if they have no experience of 3D printing. First, users take a photo of their food waste using the special app. The app uses AI to tell what kind of waste it is and if it’s suitable for printing.
④Next, the app tells users what things they can make with the waste. With this information in hand, the printer then makes the food waste into a printable bioplastic paste (生物塑料糊状物).
⑤After that, the printer heats the material and makes it into the thing people choose. People do not need to do any work in this process and the machine does everything from processing to printing.
⑥ ▲ Food waste is a common problem around the world—the world wastes over 1 billion meals every day. Most of them end up in landfills, and this is bad for the air. Now this printer can help people use food waste by giving it “a second life” instead of throwing it away. A café (咖啡馆) in Chengdu turned 2kg of coffee grounds into 10 plant pots in a week, cutting waste by 30%.
⑦Also, the team plan to test the 3D printer in daily life. According to them, the printer can reuse millions of pounds of food waste and help lots of families in need. They want to add more ways of making things to the app and work with schools to teach students to recycle waste. In the future, they hope every community can have a shared FOODres.
32. What is the FOODres printer mainly used for?
A. To take photos of different kinds of food waste. B. To teach people how to sort kitchen waste.
C. To help cafes cut down their waste by 30%. D. To turn food waste into useful daily things.
33. Which sentence can be put in the ▲ ?
A. But the printer is too expensive to buy. B. However, not everyone likes this printer.
C. The printer is even good for the environment. D. It’s possible to make more printers soon.
34. What can we infer from the passage?
A. The FOODres printer will soon be used in every community in China.
B. The FOODres printer can make a big difference to the food waste problem.
C. 70% of the world’s food waste comes from Chinese homes.
D. AI technology is not helpful for the FOODres printer to work.
35. What is the best structure of this passage?
A. B. C. D.

Animals play so many important roles in our lives. Some, like cows and sheep, provide us with food; pets are our friends; other animals work for us. Above all, every animal—big or small—can fill us with a sense of wonder of the natural world.
Unluckily, we don’t always value this. Many animals are endangered because of our actions, and millions of animals in the world are badly treated. World Animal Day prompts (提醒) us, at least for one day a year, “to celebrate animal life in all its forms” and “to be thankful for the way in which animals enrich (使丰富) our lives”.
World Animal Day was started in 1931 in Florence, Italy. It made us pay attention to the problem of endangered animals around the world. It is now celebrated in most countries around the world. The day falls on October 4 every year.
All over the world on this day, volunteers raise money for animal centers and social organizations. Museums and zoos organize special events. Schools have also joined animal projects. No matter what is done, the aim is to remind us of the importance of animals and to show us how we could improve our relationship with animals.
If you want to take part, you could help an animal or organize a money-raising event for a local charity. The important thing is just taking an active part. We should offer animals as much as they offer us.
Animals are important in our lives. However our actions make many kinds of animals ____50____, and we abuse (伤害/虐待) millions of animals. World Animal Day reminds us to ____51____. It was started in 1931 to raise public awareness about the problem of endangered animals, and now it is celebrated on October 4 every year.
With talent, hard work, and passion, Wang Hong is living a future even bigger than her dreams.

I was glad of it, for I was tired.

35 What is the best structure of this passage?
A. B. C. D.

49. it’s, waiting, keep others, very, to, impolite . (连词成句)
________________________.
【答案】It’s very impolite to keep others waiting.

However, our actions make many kinds of animals ____50____, and we abuse (伤害/虐待) millions of animals. World Animal Day reminds us to ____51____. It was started in 1931 to raise public awareness about the problem of endangered animals, and now it is celebrated on October 4 every year. On this day, many activities are held to show the importance of animals and ____52____. Each of us can help animals. So ____53____ and do as much as we can.
【答案】50. endangered
51. be thankful to animals
52. how to improve the relationship between humans and animals
53. let’s take part in protecting animals.
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,文章先点明动物对人类的重要性,再介绍当前动物面临的生存困境,进而介绍世界动物日的起源、设立目的与相关活动,最后呼吁人们参与保护动物。
【50题详解】
定位第二段“Many animals are endangered because of our actions, and millions of animals in the world are badly treated”可知,人类活动导致很多动物濒临灭绝,make sb adj“使……变得……”,这里填endangered“濒危的”,作宾语补足语。
【51题详解】
结合第二段“World Animal Day prompts (提醒) us, at least for one day a year, ‘to celebrate animal life in all its forms” and “to be thankful for the way in which animals enrich (使丰富) our lives’”可知,世界动物日提醒我们要感激动物,be thankful to animals“感激动物”符合语境,remind sb to do sth“提醒某人做某事”为固定搭配,所以这里动词用原形。
【52题详解】
结合第四段“No matter what is done, the aim is to remind us of the importance of animals and to show us how we could improve our relationship with animals.”可知,举行这些活动的目的是为了展示动物的重要性以及改善人与动物的关系,可以提炼答案为how to improve the relationship between humans and animals。
【53题详解】
定位最后两句“The important thing is just taking an active part. We should offer animals as much as they offer us.”,这里呼吁大众积极参与去保护动物,可以提炼答案为let’s take part in protecting animals。

The Rock That Lifted Me Higher
Life is like a long journey and we often meet “rocks” along the way. In the first picture, the boy thinks the rocks are getting in his way. However, he takes advantage of them and get the fruits on the tree.
Last term, I got low grades in the mid-term exam. I felt very stressed out and disappointed. That was my “rock”. After talking to my teacher, I realized I couldn’t stop just because of the failure. I decided to overcome the difficulties. Slowly but surely, I made great progress. In the final exam, my grades improved greatly.
