教学目标
1. 语言能力:能阅读关于“中美青少年课外活动与压力”的对比文章,掌握核心词汇(opinion, skill, typical, football, cut out, quick, continue, compare, crazy, push, develop)及短语(after-school classes, on the one hand... on the other hand, compare...with...);能运用略读(Skimming)获取主旨,扫读(Scanning)抓取细节信息。
(On the one hand... On the other hand...; Although...)。
3. 准确理解Dr. Green和Mr. Miller等专家的核心观点。
难点:
1. 理解长难句的逻辑关系,特别是包含定语从句和状语从句的复合句。
2. 辩证地看待“竞争”与“快乐童年”之间的矛盾,用英语清晰表达自己的立场。
3. 区分事实(Fact)与观点(Opinion),并能从文中找到支撑观点的依据。
教学环节
Step 1 Warm-up & Lead-in
1. Picture Talk: Show two pictures: one of a student buried in books/classes, another of a student playing sports freely. Ask: “Which life do you prefer? Why?”
2. Brainstorming: List common after-school activities (piano, math Olympiad, soccer, coding). Ask: “Are you busy with these? Do your parents push you?”
3. Prediction: Look at the title “Maybe You Should Learn to Relax!” and the pictures in 2a. Predict: What is the writer’s attitude? Is it positive or negative about busy schedules?
Step 2 While-reading (Task 1: Skimming for Structure)
1. Fast Reading: Read the passage quickly (3 mins) and match the main idea with each paragraph:
- Para 1: Introduction – The phenomenon of busy children.
- Para 2: The Chinese case – Cathy’s busy schedule and her mother’s opinion.
- Para 3: The American case – Taylor’s family and the pressure to compete.
- Para 4: Expert opinions – Dr. Green & Mr. Miller’s advice on relaxation and normal childhood.
2. Structure Analysis: Identify the logical flow: Problem -> Examples (CN & US) -> Solutions/Expert Advice.
Step 3 While-reading (Task 2: Scanning for Details)
1. Detail Hunt (2b): Read carefully and answer specific questions:
- What does Cathy do after school? (Homework, basketball training, piano lessons).
- Why does Linda’s mom sign her up for so many classes? (Wants her to be successful, compete with others).
- What does Dr. Green say about comparing kids? (It’s crazy/unfair; kids should be kids).
2. Vocabulary in Context: Guess meanings of typical, push, develop based on sentences. Analyze the phrase “cut out some of their activities”.
3. Fact vs. Opinion: Underline facts (e.g., “Cathy takes 3 classes”) and circle opinions (e.g., “It’s important to have free time”). Discuss the difference.
Step 4 Post-reading (Task 3: Critical Thinking & Discussion)
1. Debate (2c): Topic: “Should parents push their kids to learn more skills?”
- Group A (Pro): Skills help future success; competition is necessary.
- Group B (Con): Too much pressure harms health; childhood should be happy.
- Use sentence starters: “In my opinion...”, “I agree/disagree because...”, “On the one hand..., but on the other hand...”
2. Role-play Interview: One student acts as a reporter, another as Dr. Green or a stressed parent. Interview about the balance between study and play.
3. Advice Letter: Write a short note (3-4 sentences) to Cathy or Taylor, offering comfort and one piece of practical advice based on the text.
Step 5 Summary
Summarize the article: Busy Kids -> Reasons (Parents’ fear, Competition) -> Consequences (Stress, No fun) -> Solutions (Relax, Cut out, Be normal).
作业布置
必做:Write a summary of the passage (about 80 words) including the problem, the examples, and the experts’ advice.
选做:Draft a letter to your parents expressing your feelings about your after-school schedule, using at least two phrases from the text (e.g., “on the one hand”, “compare with”).
