In 2012, Brooklyn’s Mike Matthews was at work when one of his coworkers came into the office, lamenting (哀叹) the loss of her loved one. As she opened up to him, a thought crossed his mind; She needed to talk to Grandma Eileen. So he gave her Eileen’s phone number, On Monday, the coworker returned to the office with a spring in her step. Eileen cheered her up, and their first call marked the beginning of regular communication.
But it wasn’t just a relationship that blossomed with Matthews’ coworker. “I set up a little lemonade stand, put a laptop on it, noise-cancelling headphones and then my grandma could virtually meet anyone in New York City that was walking by,” Matthews recalled. That was the birth of the Grandma Stand.
For six years, Eileen called in and spoke with thousands of complete strangers, until she passed away in 2018 at the age of 102. “My grandma had so much love to give, and every person who talked to my grandma felt delighted, felt seen, and felt heard,” Matthews explained “and she also benefited from it, like she felt like she was valued.”
After her death, Matthews retired the Grandma Stand. But in 2024, he realized the world needed some good, old- fashioned wisdom. So he purchased a new lemonade stand, painted it Grandma Eileen’s favorite color — purple — and invited a kind grandma from his building to participate.
Since then, “Grandma Stand” has grown into a national project. In New York, about 15 grandmothers take turns working at temporary stands, which can be found in Central Park, on the streets of Manhattan, or in any corner of the city.
As the movement grows, Matthews is thrilled that more grandmas and strangers are taking part in it. But it all still comes back to Grandma Eileen. “I think she would be watching this and saying get as many grandmas involved as humanly possible so at least they have a moment to shine and be heard,” Matthews said.
24. Why did Mike Matthews advise his coworker to contact Grandma Eileen?
A. To introduce her to a new partner. B. To transfer her work pressure.
C To ask for professional advice. D. To seek emotional support.
25. What motivated Matthews to create the Grandma Stand initially?
A. His desire to start a business project. B. The convenience of his grandmother.
C. The positive outcome of his coworker. D. His grandmother’s need for recognition.
26. What can we know about the Grandma Stand?
A. It costs a lot of money. B. It is a win- win project.
C. It sells lemonade for profit. D. It mainly serves local neighbours.
27. What might be Grandma Eileen’s hope for the project?
A. To get more seniors to participate. B. To expand it globally in five years.
C. To turn it into a profitable business. D. To have a moment to shine herself.

As humans burn fossil (化石) fuels, rising temperatures are already driving more severe heat waves, floods, droughts, and wildfires. But there are even bigger impacts on the horizon. Climate change may also be pushing Earth's crucial systems — from the Amazon rainforest to polar ice sheets — so far out of balance that they collapse, sending disastrous effects across the planet. Warm water corals are the first.
According to a landmark report produced by 160 scientists across the world, the planet has reached the first in a series of disastrous and potentially unrecoverable climate tipping points: the widespread death of coral reefs (珊瑚礁). Since 2023, the world's reefs have been enduring the worst mass bleaching (白化) event on record as oceans reach record high temperatures, with more than 80% affected.
What was an underwater richness of color and life is being replaced with a bleached, seaweed-dominated landscape. Coral reefs are an essential habitat for marine species, are vital for food security, contribute trillions to the global economy and protect coastal areas from storms.
If temperatures continue to rise, the planet is on the edge of several more tipping points as it's all but certain to break the globally agreed goal of limiting warming to 1.5℃ above pre-industrial levels. One of the most alarming of these is the potential collapse of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, a crucial network of ocean currents, which would push parts of the world into a deep freeze, heating up others, disrupting seasonal winds and raising sea levels.
Manjana Milkoreit, one of the report authors, noted that current policies and international agreements are designed for gradual changes, not for these kinds of sharp, unrecoverable and interconnected shifts.
Among its alarming findings, the report also pulled out some uplifting news, including the dramatic rise of solar power and electric vehicles, as well as batteries and heat pumps (泵). Once replaced, polluting technologies are unlikely to come back as cleaner options are cheaper and better, it found.
28. What is described as the first climate tipping point the planet has reached?
A. Polar ice sheets' melting.
B. Coral reefs' massive loss.
C. Ocean currents' collapse.
D. Amazon rainforest's decline.
29. Why is Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation mentioned in paragraph 4?
A. To warn worse consequences may arise.
B. To lead in another natural phenomenon.
C. To compare effects of various Earth's systems.
D. To show the potential effect of coral bleaching.
30. What does Manjana Milkoreit think of current climate policies?
A. Predictive.
B. Achievable.
C. Insufficient.
D Unchangeable.
31. What positive change does the report highlight?
A. Polluting technologies have been banned globally.
B. Fossil fuel use has declined to pre-industrial levels.
C. Coral reefs are recovering due to new technologies.
D. Cleaner energy technologies are advancing quickly.

Elaine recently bought a gorgeous stained-glass statement mirror on an online marketplace, and then she found she was rearranging her entire bedroom to match its luxurious aesthetic (美感) and color scheme. She didn't have a bedroom redesign in her budget, but that wasn't stopping her. Have you ever updated one thing in your home and suddenly found yourself with a laundry list of changes you want to make? This phenomenon is called the Diderot Effect.
The phenomenon got its name from French philosopher Denis Diderot. In 1769, Diderot penned an essay describing the receipt of a new dressing gown, which sparked a series of impulsive (易冲动的) purchases that sank him into debt — and thus lending his name to this psychological phenomenon.
This isn't just a consequence of 18th-century behavior, though. The Diderot effect is alive and well today. Don't be too hard on yourself if you fall victim to the Diderot effect. Psychotherapist Dr. Daryl Appleton says it's a very human response, similar to the feeling when you put on brand-new clothes, but then wear your worn-out shoes — the mismatch is uncomfortable. What's happening beneath the surface is partly neurological (神经学的). When we seek something new, our brain releases more dopamine, often called our “ pleasure chemical” that drives desire. So, that rush you feel when you start fixing the things around the shiny new object is not just aesthetics; it's brain chemistry. We're born to long for novel things.
The Diderot Effect can show up anywhere from your closet to your career. Therapist Dr. Alfonso Ferguson says, “Often, what's really happening underneath is a desire to feel in harmony with one's space — to finally feel a sense of pride, peace, or even safety that may have been missing in other parts of life.” It's not always a bad thing to want your space to progress with you. But if it starts to feel compulsive, it can be pretty difficult to escape the cycle. You'll keep chasing the next upgrade.
32. What is the main purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To analyse reasons. B. To lead in the topic.
C. To conduct a comparison. D. To present viewpoints.
33. What is the motivation behind the Diderot Effect according to paragraph 3?
A. An attempt to escape stress from one's work.
B. A desire to achieve harmony in one's life.
C. A rush to show off one's wealth.
D. A biological urge to seek novelties.
34. What does the underlined word “compulsive” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Uncontrollable. B. Adaptable.
C. Unrealistic. D. Casual.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. How Our Daily Needs Help Fuel Endless Purchase
B. The Science of Holding Back Endless Consumption
C. Why One New Thing Changes Everything
D The Psychology Behind Chasing Harmony

It all started when I walked to a quiet corner of my neighborhood one afternoon. To my disappointment, I found an empty lot overgrown with weeds, where old furniture had been left and rainwater had gathered in muddy puddles (小水坑) on the ground. I stood there for a while, feeling sad about this wasted space. Then an idea came to me — what if we could turn this messy place into a small garden for everyone?
That evening, I sent a message in our neighborhood chat group. I explained my plan and invited people to join me. Hours passed, but only two neighbors sent short replies saying “A good idea.” I felt a little discouraged. Just when I was about to give up, my phone lit up with a private message. It was from Mr. Wilson, an elderly man who lived alone in Building 3. I knew him by sight but had never spoken to him before. His message read: “I have some gardening tools and a few flower seeds. Can I help you?” I sent him a message, saying, “Yes. That's absolutely great.”
We met at the empty lot the next Saturday morning. Mr. Wilson brought not only tools but also a small hand- drawn map. He pointed and said, “We can plant sunflowers here because they love sunlight, and we can put some easy- to- grow flowers near the path.” I was surprised by his knowledge. As we started cleaning together, he shared stories about the small garden he used to keep in his hometown. I realized he missed those days deeply.
During the following weeks, we worked every weekend. The work was not easy. We had to remove the rubbish, clear the deep weeds and fill the muddy puddles with soil. Mr. Wilson showed me how to properly plant the seeds and water them. As we worked, more neighbors became interested. A young girl offered to paint signs for the garden; an old lady shared her gardening tips; and a couple helped build a simple fence.

【原文】W: Hey, Tom! You look worn-out. What’s wrong?
M: Hi, Lucy. The school science fair is next week, and our group’s robot project is in big trouble. The motor suddenly stopped working this morning, and we can’t figure out why.
W: Oh no! That’s really terrible. What did your team do at first?
M: We were so frightened that we almost gave up and told the teacher we’d drop out. But then we realized that we’d spent months on this, so we decided to take the robot apart and check each part of it.
W: You’re so smart! Do you need any tools? I have a toolkit which my dad gave me.
M: That’d be amazing! Right now, we’re analyzing the circuit board and rewriting some of the programming code. It’s a race against time.
W: I’m sure that you’ll fix the circuit. If you need more help, I can ask my brother — he’s good at robotics. Maybe we can even test the robot in my backyard before the fair.
M: That’s a great idea! It’s so kind of you. We definitely need to do a trial run.

Just a hundred yards away, lightning struck the tree from top to bottom. If Jim had been under the tree, he would have been killed. Then he saw a lady with a small child passing by. “Did you call me?” he asked. The lady looked confused. “I don’t even know you. I called my son, Jim,” she answered, pointing to the boy beside her. “When you called, I left the tree. Look at the burnt tree over there. Thanks,” Jim replied. “It must have been luck that made me call so loudly to my boy,” the lady said joyfully.

C. To ask for professional advice.

D. Unchangeable.
31. What positive change does the report highlight?
A. Polluting technologies have been banned globally.
B. Fossil fuel use has declined to pre-industrial levels.
C. Coral reefs are recovering due to new technologies.
D. Cleaner energy technologies are advancing quickly.
【答案】28. B 29. A 30. C 31. D

C A rush to show off one's wealth.
D. A biological urge to seek novelties.
34. What does the underlined word “compulsive” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Uncontrollable. B. Adaptable.
C. Unrealistic. D. Casual.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. How Our Daily Needs Help Fuel Endless Purchase
B. The Science of Holding Back Endless Consumption
C. Why One New Thing Changes Everything
D. The Psychology Behind Chasing Harmony
【答案】32. B 33. D 34. A 35. C

With most of today’s written communication typed out on keyboards, you may not see much of a reason to improve your handwriting. ____36____. It is exactly the moment you realize your handwriting looks not great. Luckily, it’s never too late to get better handwriting. Here are some ways.
Find space and comfort
If you’ve ever struggled to sign a paper or write a note with no table in sight, you know it’s important to feel comfortable when you want to write clearly. Start by giving yourself a chance to sit down at a stable table. Keep cups, personal items and any decoration far from you.____37____.
Find the right pen
Now, it’s time to get a pen you like. The best way to know if a pen is right for you is to try it. If you can, go to a stationery store and take your time sampling the pens there.____38____. Maybe buy two or three to keep testing at home. If you have no idea where to start, you can always give some fan favorites a test drive.
____39____
To make your writing practice more effective, start by using paper with guidance lines. Whether you prefer lined or dotted paper, these visual aids help you maintain consistent letter size, alignment, and direction, making it easier to develop uniform handwriting. Mastering this foundation is the first step toward developing any handwriting style with confidence.
Adjust your writing speed and grip (紧握)
____40____. You should write neither too quickly nor too slowly. Moreover, avoid holding the pen too tightly. If your fingertips turn white, loosen your hold. A relaxed grip helps prevent hand strain and pain, allowing you to write longer without discomfort. If you still have trouble controlling the pen, try a different kind of pen.
A. Find out the guidance lines
B. Make the paper adapt to you
C. When you write, do it at a normal pace
D. It’s a good idea to keep the paper as flat as possible

【答案】范文
Slowly, the garden started to take shape. The muddy puddles disappeared, replaced by neat, small flower beds. The most eye-catching were the sunflowers. The empty ground was now covered with soft and green grass. We built a simple winding path using bricks and stones we found. The thrown-away furniture was gone, and in its place stood the new wooden bench and a small fence painted white. A young tree was planted in one corner, its new leaves gently swaying in the wind. Birds and butterflies started visiting, adding life and movement. The once dirty place was now full of life and beauty.
The garden quickly became a favorite spot for our community. Every afternoon after school, children would run straight here to play. They loved chasing each other along the path, watching butterflies, or simply lying on the grass to look at the clouds. Parents sat on the bench or on mats, talking and laughing, while their children played nearby. Mr. Wilson was almost always there, patiently watering the plants. The garden was no longer just a place with plants; it became the one where people shared stories and built friendships. It taught us all that by working together, we could create not just a beautiful garden, but a warmer and closer community.
