②Three years ago, however, Leah was not active at all. The Smart Borrowing System in our school library has been running for two months. It was introduced to solve the long waiting lines during lunch breaks and after school, and to help students find books more easily. Here’s how it works and what advantages it brings.
First, registering(注册) for SBS is simple. You just need to scan(扫描) your student ID at the service desk and set a password(密码). After that, you can use either the SBS machines in the library or the school’s WeChat mini-program to borrow books. The mini-program is even more convenient: search for the book by title or writer, reserve it if it’s out, and borrow it directly when you pick it up.
Second, SBS helps manage books better. Each book has a tiny RFID chip(射频识别芯片) inside. The system knows where every book is, so librarians(图书馆管理员) no longer need to check shelves one by one. If you forget to return a book, the system sends a message to your school email three days before you need to return it. Last month, the number of late returns dropped by 65% compared to last year.
Some students worried SBS would be hard to use, but in fact it’s popular. “I used to spend 20 minutes looking for history books. Now I can get them in 2 minutes. It really helps.” said Li Hua, a Grade 9 student. The librarians also like it. “We can focus on helping students instead of checking out books again and again.” said Ms. Wang.
However, SBS has rules too. You can borrow at most 4 books at a time, and keep them for 30 days. If you lose a book, you need to pay for it before borrowing more. Also, food and drinks are still not allowed near the SBS machines—they might harm the equipment.
26. Why was the Smart Borrowing System introduced?
A. To help send messages. B. To teach students computer skills.
C. To sell more books to students. D. To solve the problem of long lines.
27. What does the underlined word “reserve” mean in Paragraph 2?
A. Buy something new. B. Keep something for later use.
C. Repair something broken. D. Return something borrowed.
28. How does the writer support the idea that SBS manages books better in Paragraph 3?
A. By telling stories. B. By giving numbers.
C. By asking questions. D. By comparing two libraries.
29. What can we infer(推断) about Li Hua?
A. He works in the school library. B. He often forgets to return books to school.
C. He finds SBS convenient for studying. D. He helped improve the school mini-program.
30. What is the passage mainly about?
A. A new system making library use easier. B. Rules for borrowing books from the library.
C. The importance of reading in middle schools. D. The way of using the school library properly.

Do you know where your food comes from? How far do the milk, apples and other things you eat travel to reach you? ____31____ And those decisions can also shape the world around us.
Starting to check your food miles is an important step in saving the earth. ____32____ From the farm to the fork, the shorter the distance, the better the food will be for your health and the environment.
Food miles are a modern idea. In the past, people ate food they grew by themselves. However, since the world became highly connected, we have become used to having all kinds of global (全球的) foods. We buy tropical (热带的) fruits rather than those grown in our local climate. ____33____
When we count the food miles, we shouldn’t just think about the exact number of miles. It depends on many factors (因素). For one thing, the ways of transportation are important. ____34____ However, it is bad for the environment. If the food travels by sea, it will be much slower but better for the environment.
____35____ However, the simple fact is that most of us can do far better than what we do now. Whenever you can, buy the local farmers’ food and eat fruits and vegetables in season. This will help cut down the environmental cost of what we eat.
A. The decisions we make on what we eat shape us.
B. Air travel, for example, allows food to travel quickly.
C. Most people prefer to eat the food which is produced locally.

【答案】26. D 27. B 28. B 29. C 30. A

D It is not easy to work out the environmental cost of what we eat.
E. We want fresh products even when there is snow on the ground.

Find the right friend

When you get into trouble, they are ready to offer you a helping hand, no matter how much time or energy this may take them.
