But what he has done for hundreds of children in his village of Basantpur is nothing short of extraordinary. For the past decade, the 76-year-old has been teaching and managing Basantpur Junior High School (BJHS), keeping it from shutting down, all without charging a fee. Born in a poor family, Ghosh understood the importance of education. So when he was fresh out of college and ready to work, he opened a school for poor students. However, he soon faced financial problems. Unwillingly he stopped working for the school. “But I was sure that I would get another chance to work for society,” he says with a heavy voice. The opportunity came knocking on his door when Ghosh retired and decided to return to his village. When Ghosh returned home, he realised that his village and the nearby villages still did not have any schools. He reached out to the State Government with the request of opening a junior high school in the village. Ghosh secured the approvals. Ghosh faced a challenge when the school needed permanent teachers appointed. “The school currently has four temporary teachers who keep changing with a student strength of 140,” he says, adding that the school started with a mere 40 students and now the number has increased. The school gets an annual grant (拨款) of Rs 25,000. “It is a small amount — enough to take care of the upkeep of the school, but not enough to pay any teachers.” The otherwise lively man’s spirit seemed to be broken when he spoke about the future. “The future is quite uncertain if you ask me. I have no idea how long I can keep running the school this way.” But Ghosh remarks his only motivation to work without pay in the school is its students. “The ray of hope for a better future in the eyes of the children is all the salary I need to keep teaching.” 41. What was Ghosh’s first response to media interviews? A. He claimed to be an ordinary man. B. He emphasized the importance of education. C. He was proud of his teaching achievements. D. He talked about the difficulties of running the school. 42. Why did Ghosh stop working for the school he had opened? A. He was due for retirement. B. He lost interest in teaching. C. Which of the following can best describe Ghosh? A. Cooperative and kind. B. Ambitious and determined. C. Friendly and honest. D. Selfless and devoted. Ohio—Lake Erie, the smallest of North America's five Great Lakes, supplies fresh drinking water to an estimated 11 million people in Ohio, Michigan and southern Ontario province, Canada. Yet sometimes pollution, bath from industrial waste and farm-chemical run-off, leaves large areas of the lake covered in half-meter-thick layers of green slime. Scientists blame a lot of chemicals entering the water, which has caused pollution. To find out where these extra nutrients come from, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources has been studying data from its network of 14 water-quality monitoring stations installed along the rivers that flow into the Lake Erie basin. At one point, water from the small stream is diverted into a pipe where it is pumped into the testing station. We'll have 'a sample a day, year-round every day so that really pins down what the chemistry is like," says Dave Baker of Ohio's Heidelberg University, who takes charge of the monitoring stations for the Department of Natural Resources. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the federal government's pollution watchdog, requires point sources, such as factories, to monitor and report their discharges. So Baker is looking for where the other sources of pollution come from. "If there are problems in Lake Erie, we want to know where it's coming from and make sure we're putting resources to solve the problem properly," Baker says. In this case, a primary source of the pollution turns out to be chemical fertilizer that turn off farmland during rainstorms. Because farmers believe fertilizers are essential to high crop yields, they would like to use them. However, the USDA's Natural Resource Conservation Service isn't asking them to abandon farm chemicals, but rather to use them more sparingly so they don't run off the land when it rains. Another technique for reducing farm chemical pollution of Lake Erie is cover-crop farming. After the harvest, farmers plant a second quick-growing crop to reduce erosion. The deep-rooted plants, such as rye or turnips, help to cover the soil, allowing worms and fungi to work their magic and helping the soil to absorb more water and nutrients. 46. What is the problem with Lake Erie? A. There are no fish in it. B. There is little water in it. C. The water is unfit to drink. D. It contains a lot of chemicals. 47. Who provides data about Lake Erie? A. The water-quality monitoring stations. B. Natural Resource Conservation Service. C. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources. D. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. 48. The underlined phrase "pins down" in Paragraph 5 probably means " ". A. looks through B. explains exactly C. keeps a record of D. shows clearly 49 What causes the pollution in Lake Erie? A. Animal waste from nearby farms. B. Waste water from a nearby factory. C. Chemical fertilizers from the fields. D. Pesticide farmers used to kill locusts. 50. Quick-growing crops can be planted to . A. prevent worms from eating crops B. increase the harvest of the farmers C. make full use of chemical fertilizers in the soil D. keep the soil from being washed away With child behavior, there is almost much more than it meets the eye. Because it occurs at so many different levels, child behavior that seems simple at one level can often be much more complex and meaningful at another. For instance, a little child’s pattern of getting into cupboards, drawers and closed rooms, even after being told not to, is easily considered as bad behavior. When viewed at that level, the pattern is unacceptable and could lead to punishment. But it can be viewed at a more complex and meaningful level, namely child exploration. If a child regularly experiences an angry parent who seems determined to prevent any exploratory activities, the child will decide to continue to achieve future discoveries. When parents view this behavior as born out of natural curiosity rather than simple opposition, they are more likely to accept and appropriately monitor it. Although it may lead to warning responses to ensure the child’s safety, it is less likely to lead to punishment. There are countless other examples. Holding a goldfish outside its bowl is foolish at one level but also can be seen as a young child’s attempt to express physical affection for a pet. Spending time with friends rather than family is selfish at one level but also indicates a teen’s need for independence. The point here is that child behavior is often exhibited in simple forms that can appear to be oppositional, selfish or generally unacceptable if viewed only at that basic level. However, when viewed at a more meaningful level, the same apparently simple behavior can be seen as something larger and potentially more adaptive. This doesn’t mean the behavior should be ignored, especially if it is inappropriate. But looking at the bigger picture of a child’s behavior, adults might gain a fuller understanding of what they’re dealing with, which can create more flexibility in how they respond. 51. According to Paragraph 1, we can know that child behavior ________. A. is very changeable B. is inacceptable C. occurs at different levels D. is fully understood by adults 52. The example in Paragraph 2 mainly shows that ________. A. parents should properly punish child behavior B. parents should keep children’s safety in mind C. children’s behavior shows their interests D. there are different attitudes to child behavior 53. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 most probably mean? A. The child will insist on doing things with determination. B. The child will have to make frequent decisions. C. The child will make new discoveries in the future. D. The child will develop a strong sense of achievement. 54. It can be inferred from Paragraph 3 that ________. A. child behavior usually reflects a child’s need B. what a child does can mean differently when seen from different aspects C. children tend to do something to show their dependence to their parents D. children spending time with friends show their selfishness 55. What does the writer suggest parents should do with a child’s behavior? A. Have a positive attitude towards it. B. Ignore the improper behavior. C. View it at the basic level. D. Watch over it from head to foot. 第II卷 注意事项: 1.用黑色墨水的钢笔或签字笔将答案写在答题卡上。 2.本卷共6小题,共35分。 第四部分:写作 第一节 阅读表达(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分) 阅读短文,根据题目要求用英语回答问题。 Just before turning fifty years old, I had a happy trip of riding a motor scooter (小型摩托车). Then I desired to learn to ride a real, powerful motorcycle. A friend lent me his motorcycle, and with some instructions. I took off. As I tried to turn around on a road, the engine died. I continually went through the startup and take-off procedures, but that didn’t work. Disgusted, I got off the motorcycle which looked like my enemy. Later after throwing my leg over the seat, I turned the key and let out the clutch (离合器踏板). To my surprise, the motorcycle started moving forward. I was riding again! That motorcycle and I had come to an understanding. After I took some courses on traffic rules and practiced on rough country roads, my confidence and skills were greatly amplified. But the reaction of my friends and family was the same — their faces all wore the doubtful expressions. Shaking her head in disbelief, my mother said, “Oh, Annis, I can’t believe it.” “Oh, my goodness! You’re riding that big motorcycle? You’re nearly fifty years old,” one friend yelled as she looked towards the parking lot where I’d parked. They were absolutely surprised. Eighteen years later, I looked back and thought that motorcycling opened a new world to me, I’ve ridden my motorcycle in four countries: the United States, Mexico, Canada, and New Zealand. Through all my travels, I’ve learned more about myself and the places I’ve been to. Most importantly, some of my dearest and deepest friendships have come from motorcycling. It is our love for the sport and adventure that brings us together. I come to respect, admire, and oven love people with whom I have the mutual inter-dependence. I started motorcycling in the second half of my life, but I was mature enough to handle it with safety and care. Thanks to motorcycling, I’ve had a more exciting life now. 56. D. C 【解析】 【分析】这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了北美伊利湖的污染问题,工业废料和农用化学物质的排放造成的污染,使该湖大片地区覆盖着半米厚的绿色黏液层。科学家指责大量化学物质进入水中,造成了污染。文章介绍了人们是如何找出这些额外的营养物质来自哪里的,以及对此的解决办法。 【46题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段“Yet sometimes pollution, bath from industrial waste and farm-chemical run-off, leaves large areas of the lake covered in half-meter-thick layers of green slime. Scientists blame a lot of chemicals entering the water, which has caused pollution.(然而,有时,工业废料和农用化学物质的排放造成的污染,会使伊利湖大片地区覆盖着半米厚的绿色黏液层。科学家指责大量化学物质进入水中,造成了污染)”可知,伊利湖的问题是它含有很多化学物质。故选D。 【47题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“To find out where these extra nutrients come from, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources has been studying data from its network of 14 water-quality monitoring stations installed along the rivers that flow into the Lake Erie basin.(为了找出这些额外的营养物质来自哪里,俄亥俄州自然资源部一直在研究其网络的数据,该网络由14个水质监测站组成,这些监测站安装在流入伊利湖盆地的河流沿岸)”可知,是水质监测站提供了伊利湖的数据。故选A。 【48题详解】 词义猜测题。根据画线词上文“We'll have 'a sample a day, year-round every day so that really”以及后文“what the chemistry is like”可知,每天都会有一个样品,全年每天都有,这样是为了解释清楚这种化学物质到底是什么样的。画线词意思为“解释清楚”。故选B。 【49题详解】 细节理解题。根据倒数第三段“In this case, a primary source of the pollution turns out to be chemical fertilizer that turn off farmland during rainstorms.(在这种情况下,污染的主要来源是化学肥料,在暴雨期间化学肥料从农田流入了湖里)”以及倒数第二段中“Because farmers believe fertilizers are essential to high crop yields, they would like to use them.(因为农民相信化肥是提高作物产量的关键,他们愿意使用化肥)”可知,导致伊利湖污染的原因是农田里的化肥。故选C。 【50题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段“Another technique for reducing farm chemical pollution of Lake Erie is cover-crop farming. After the harvest, farmers plant a second quick-growing crop to reduce erosion. The deep-rooted plants, such as rye or turnips, help to cover the soil, allowing worms and fungi to work their magic and helping the soil to absorb more water and nutrients.(另一种减少伊利湖农场化学污染的技术是覆盖作物种植。收获后,农民种植第二种快速生长的作物,以减少水土流失。深根植物,如黑麦或芜菁,有助于覆盖土壤,让蠕虫和真菌发挥它们的魔力,帮助土壤吸收更多的水和养分)”可知,种植速生作物,是为了充分利用土壤中的化肥。故选C。 With child behavior, there is almost much more than it meets the eye. A. child behavior usually reflects a child’s need B. what a child does can mean differently when seen from different aspects C. children tend to do something to show their dependence to their parents D. children spending time with friends show their selfishness 55 What does the writer suggest parents should do with a child’s behavior? A. Have a positive attitude towards it. B. Ignore the improper behavior. C. View it at the basic level. D. Watch over it from head to foot. 【答案】51. C 52. D 53. A 54. B 55. A 【解析】 【分析】本文为说明文。孩子的行为在一个层次上看起来很简单,但在另一个层次上往往要复杂得多,也更有意义。本文对此话题展开了介绍。 【51题详解】 细节理解题。根据第一段中的Because it occurs at so many different levels(因为它发生在很多不同的层次上)可知,儿童行为发生在不同的层次上。故C选项正确。 【52题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中的If a child regularly experiences an angry parent who seems determined to prevent any exploratory activities(如果孩子经常遇到似乎决心阻止任何探索活动的愤怒父母)及When parents view this behavior as born out of natural curiosity rather than simple opposition(当父母认为这种行为是出于天生的好奇心而不是简单的反对时)可知,父母对儿童行为有不同的态度。故D选项正确。 【53题详解】 句意理解题。根据第二段中的For instance, a little child’s pattern of getting into cupboards, drawers and closed rooms, even after being told not to, is easily considered as bad behavior.(例如,即使在被告知不要这样做之后,一个小孩仍然进入橱柜、抽屉和密室的行为很容易被认为是一种不良行为)可知,有的时候,你不让孩子做,他偏要做,愤怒的父母似乎会决心阻止孩子任何探索性的活动,这反而让孩子更加坚定要做这件事。由此可推知,划线句意为“孩子将决定继续实现未来的发现”。故A选项正确。 【54题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段中的例子可知,从不同的角度看孩子所做的事情,那么他们的行为可能会有不同的含义。故B选项正确。 【55题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段中的This doesn’t mean the behavior should be ignored, especially if it is inappropriate. But looking at the bigger picture of a child’s behavior, adults might gain a fuller understanding of what they’re dealing with, which can create more flexibility in how they respond.(这并不意味着这种行为应该被忽视,尤其是当它是不合适的时候。 Just before turning fifty years old, I had a happy trip of riding a motor scooter (小型摩托车).
