Firstly, there are no lessons. All the children, aged between 4 and 19, do whatever they want to. There are no teachers —only “staff members”. The idea behind this is that you do not need to make children learn, because children want to learn anyway. “You do not need to say to a three-year-old, ‘Go to explore your environment.’ You can’t stop them!” says Daniel Greenberg, a founder of the school. “But if you make children do what you want all day, they will lose all taste for learning.” At Sudbury Valley School, you will permit children to talk, read, paint, cook, work on computers, study French, play the piano, climb trees, or just run around. Two boys spent three years just fishing! The other way that Sudbury Valley School is different is that the children can decide the rules. Every week, there is a school meeting where both children and staff have one vote each—even the four-year-olds. They decide the school rules, how to spend the school budget, and even which staff they want and do not want any more. When the school first opened in 1968, people said it would never work. But today, the school has 200 students, and 80% of its students go on to college. Even the two boys who went fishing all the time have successful careers today. One of them is a musician and the other is a computer scientist. 4. What is the main topic of the article? A. An unusual school. B. Children’s hobbies. C. A school without rules. D. Education in the US. 5. What does the school believe? A. Teachers cannot teach children well. B. Children learn best when they do what they want to do. C. Learning is for adults—children should only play. D. Children should only learn about one thing at a time. 6. What does Daniel Greenberg say about three-year-olds? A. They love learning. B. They are very naughty. C. They want to be outside all the time. D. They are too young to learn anything. 7. Who has the most power in the school meetings? A. The older children have more power than the younger children. B. A child has more power than an adult. C. The younger children have more power than the older children. D. Everybody has equal power. C Being a teenager can be hard, for you have to face a lot of difficult problems, but a new program called Nfusion is working hard to help teens with mental (精神的) health needs. Nfusion gives teenagers classes where they study or discuss some troubling subjects. Drugs and bullying (欺凌) are just a few of the topics that are discussed during the class on Saturday. “I had a bad attitude,” said 17-year-old Titeana Davis. Davis went through the Nfusion Program last year. The teen, who once had trouble with her attitude towards others, says the program has changed her life. “They taught me that a bad attitude is not going to get you anywhere. It doesn’t matter if other people treat you wrong; you still treat them how you want to be treated and it helped me a lot,” said Davis. Nfusion is a new program that meets teens’ mental health needs and provides help for their families. The program is designed to help teens aged between 14 and 21 live through a difficult period. “They’re still growing, still developing and still there are a lot of things they don’t know how to address. So this is a good program for them to be a part of,” said Lakicha Jernigan, who worked for the Nfusion Program. Teens like Davis are just a few who have come through the program successfully. Now thanks to Nfusion, Davis says she’s looking forward to a bright future. “After I graduate from college, I want to work at a primary school and I want to be a second-grade teacher,” added Davis. Nfusion is a System of Care initiative and is working with the Mississippi Transitional Outreach Project, a project of the Mississippi Department of Mental Health. System of Care provides community-based services to help youth with serious mental health needs and their families. 8. What’s the purpose of Nfusion? A. To provide teens with some programs. B. To help teens fight for a better future. C. To help teens receive a good education. D. To meet the mental health needs of teens. 9. We may know that before turning to Nfusion, Titeana Davis ________. A. didn’t go to school as often as her parents expected her to B. often had fights with her classmates and neighbors C. didn’t take a right attitude towards people around her D often forgot things and misunderstood her parents 10. What does the underlined word “address” in Paragraph 5 mean? A. Look for. B. Deal with. C. Talk about. D. Concentrate on. 11. What is Davis’ attitude towards future after going through Nfusion? A. Anxious. B. Confused. C. Frightened. D. Positive. D As is known to us all, reading books is good for children. Now, a new study suggests that just being around books has its benefits (益处). A team of researchers in Australia finds that growing up with a large library at home improves literacy (读写能力), number-sense, and even technological skills in later life. It appeared in Social Science Research. The researchers were exploring the advantages of scholarly culture. They were interested in an extra finding that some call the “radiation effect”. “The radiation effect is a situation where children grow up around books, but they don’t read books. But somehow books benefit them, even though they don’t read them as much as their parents wish them to,” said Joanna Sikora, a scientist in Australia. Joanna and her workmates studied information collected between 2015 and 2019 by the Organization for Economic Development. The survey tested the literacy, numeracy (计算能力) and technological abilities of more than 160,000 adults from 31 countries. And it included a question about how many books participants (参加者) had in their homes during adolescence (青春期). “What we were able to make clear was that people growing up around books had better literacy, numeracy and technological problem-solving skills than people who had fewer books growing up but had similar education levels, similar jobs, and even similar adult habits in connection with reading or working at numeracy-improving activities,” she said. In fact, teens who only made it through high school but were raised in a bookish environment did as well in adulthood as college graduates who grew up in a house without books. Now, how might a simple display lead to intellectual (智力的) improvement? “If we grow up in a house, in a home where parents enjoy books, where books are given as birthday presents and valued, this is something that becomes a wealth of knowledge and gives us this lifelong driving force (驱动力) to always come close to books and read more than we would.” So keep shelves filled with books. Your kids will not only be thankful, they’ll be more likely to be able to spell “thankful” correctly as well. 12. What’s “the radiation effect” according to the text? A. The terrible influence of radiation on men and things. B. The negative influence of giving teens birthday presents which are not valued. C. The beneficial influence of reading books on adolescents. D The good influence of the bookish environment on adolescents. 13. What can we learn about the participants from Paragraph 2? A. They all graduated from college. B. They had only one answer to the survey. C. They had all been to a sizable library at least once. D. They were brought up in different growth environments. 14. How does the display of books improve intellect? A. Books help to provide a chance to come close to society. B. Books are always given to adolescents as valuable presents. C. Books will offer teens a drive to make great achievements. D. Books bring a sense of being rich in knowledge and longing to read more. 15. What’s the best title for the text? A. Reading More Helps Improve Children’s Abilities B. Reading at Home Brings Children Many Advantages C. Growing Up Around Books Benefits Children a Lot D. Creating a Bookish Environment for Children Ts of Much Importance How Can I Fight Laziness? Lazy people will never gain anything in life. However, laziness can be defeated once a few changes have been made in your mind. ___16___Many people lack sleep constantly, since they stay up too late and get up too early to prepare for work. These people have little motivation once they arrive home. Laziness works hand in hand with a lack of motivation and a tendency to put off things. By adjusting your sleep schedule to provide a few more hours of meaningful rest, you can fight laziness throughout the day. Another way to fight laziness is to change your mind from passive to active. Some people treat their lives as if they were pushed from task to task. Others take a more positive approach, viewing each task as a challenge they must overcome alone. ____17____ Some people fight laziness removing the temptations that surround them. A television in the living room may provide entertainment, but watching too much TV often contributes to laziness. ____18____Complete a few tasks and reward yourself with what you enjoy, such as a good dinner or a film. Laziness can also be a lasting problem at home. Couples and children may all have different energy levels, but laziness can be spread if not deal with immediately. ____19____ Be the first to collect and wash dishes after a meal. Others in the home may eventually follow your example and perform their own task. It is difficult to practice laziness when you are surrounded by motivated people. ____20____ Enough exercise and a balanced diet can help you to develop a healthy lifestyle, thus enabling you to have more energy and help lift your spirits. A. To fight family laziness, set an example. B. Knowing how to fight laziness is important. C. One way to fight laziness is to get enough sleep. D. Finally, taking exercise regularly can help you fight laziness. E. With strong determination, you will be able to achieve your goal. F. Create a reward system for yourself, just as parents do for a child. G. Laziness appears when you no longer feel in charge of your own mind. I was not very close to my father. 通读全文及根据本文第一段“But for the children at Sudbury Valley School, Massachusetts, school is very different.(但是对于马萨诸塞州Sudbury Valley学校的孩子们来说,学校是完全不同的)”及第二段中“Firstly, there are no lessons.(首先,没有课程)”,“There are no teachers —only “staff members”.(没有老师,只有“教职员工”)”以及第三段“At Sudbury Valley School, you will permit children to talk, read, paint, cook, work on computers, study French, play the piano, climb trees, or just run around. Two boys spent three years just fishing!(在萨德伯里山谷学校,你将允许孩子们说话、读书、画画、做饭、在电脑上学习、学习法语、弹钢琴、爬树或只是四处跑。两个男孩花了三年时间钓鱼!)”以及第四段“The other way that Sudbury Valley School is different is that the children can decide the rules.( 另一方面,Sudbury Valley学校不同的是,孩子们可以决定规则)”可知,本文讲述了Sudbury Valley学校的教育模式,与普通学校有很多不同之处,学生们不用上课,不用做作业,可以随心所欲干自己想干的事,可以参与学校制度的制定。 故选A。 通读全文,根据第二段中“All the children, aged between 4 and 19, do whatever they want.(所有的孩子,年龄在4岁到19岁之间,想做什么就做什么)”以及第三段中该校创始人之一Daniel Greenberg所说“But if you make children do what you want all day, they will lose all taste for learning.(但如果你让孩子们整天做你想做的事,他们就会失去学习的兴趣)”可知,学校倡导学生“自主学习”,认为在孩子们做他们想做的事情时,他们学得最好。 根据第二段中“The idea behind this is that you do not need to make children learn, because children want to learn anyway.(这背后的想法是,你不需要迫使孩子学习,因为孩子无论如何都想学习)”可知,学习是每个孩子的天性。故推测Daniel Greenberg 所说的“You do not need to say to a three-year-old, ‘Go to explore your environment.’ You can’t stop them!(你不需要对一个三岁的孩子说,“去探索你的环境。”你无法阻止他们!)”意思是三岁的孩子热爱学习。故选A。 根据第四段“Every week, there is a school meeting where both children and staff have one vote each—even the four-year-old.They decide the school rules, how to spend the school budget, and even which staff they want and do not want any more.(每周都有一次学校会议,孩子和教职工每人都有一票,4岁的孩子也有一票.他们决定学校的规则,如何花费学校的预算,甚至是他们想要和不想要的员工。)”可知,在学校会议上每个人都有平等的权力。故选D项。 C Being a teenager can be hard, for you have to face a lot of difficult problems, but a new program called Nfusion is working hard to help teens with mental (精神的) health needs. A. didn’t go to school as often as her parents expected her to B. often had fights with her classmates and neighbors C. didn’t take a right attitude towards people around her D. often forgot things and misunderstood her parents 10. What does the underlined word “address” in Paragraph 5 mean? A. Look for. B. Deal with. C. Talk about. D. Concentrate on. 11. What is Davis’ attitude towards future after going through Nfusion? A. Anxious. B. Confused. C. Frightened. D. Positive. D 9. C 10. B 11. 根据第一段中的“Being a teenager can be hard, for you have to face a lot of difficult problems, but a new program called Nfusion is working hard to help teens with mental (精神的) health needs. (作为一名青少年可能很艰难,因为你必须面对许多困难的问题,但一个名为Nfusion的新项目正努力帮助有心理健康需求的青少年)”可知,Nfusion项目的目的是满足青少年的心理健康需求。故选D项。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中的““I had a bad attitude,” said 17-year-old Titeana Davis. Davis went through the Nfusion Program last year. The teen, who once had trouble with her attitude towards others, says the program has changed her life. (17岁的蒂蒂安娜·戴维斯说:“我曾经态度很差。”戴维斯去年参加了Nfusion项目。这个曾经对他人态度有问题的青少年说,这个项目改变了她的生活)”可知,在参加Nfusion项目之前,戴维斯对周围的人没有采取正确的态度。故选C项。 【10题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第一段中的“Being a teenager can be hard, for you have to face a lot of difficult problems, but a new program called Nfusion is working hard to help teens with mental (精神的) health needs.(青少年时期可能会很艰难,因为你必须面对很多难题,不过一个名为Nfusion的新项目正努力帮助有心理健康需求的青少年)”以及第五段中的““They’re still growing, still developing and still there are a lot of things they don’t know how to address. So this is a good program for them to be a part of,” said Lakicha Jernigan, who worked for the Nfusion Program. (“他们仍在成长、仍在发展,还有很多事情他们不知道如何处理。所以这对他们来说是一个很好的项目,”在Nfusion项目工作的拉基查·杰尼根说)”可知,前文提到青少年面对很多困难问题,该项目是为了帮助他们,由此判断,划线单词address表示“处理、应对”符合语境。故选B项。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。根据第六段中“Now, thanks to Nfusion, Davis says she’s looking forward to a bright future. “After I graduate from college, I want to work at a primary school and I want to be a second-grade teacher,” added Davis. (现在,多亏了Nfusion,戴维斯说她期待着光明的未来。“大学毕业后,我想在一所小学工作,我想成为一名二年级老师,”戴维斯补充道)”可推知,经历Nfusion项目后,戴维斯对未来的态度是积极乐观的。故选D项。 D As is known to us all, reading books is good for children. D. The good influence of the bookish environment on adolescents. Creating a Bookish Environment for Children Ts of Much Importance 【答案】12. D 13. D 14. D 15. 根据第二段中的““The radiation effect is a situation where children grow up around books, but they don’t read books. But somehow books benefit them, even though they don’t read them as much as their parents wish them to,” said Joanna Sikora, a scientist in Australia. (“辐射效应是一种情况,孩子们在书中长大,但他们不读书。但不知怎的,书对他们有好处,即使他们没有像父母希望的那样多读书,”澳大利亚科学家乔安娜·西科拉说)”可知,“辐射效应”指的是有书的环境对青少年好的影响。故选D。 【13题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段中的“What we were able to make clear was that people growing up around books had better literacy, numeracy and technological problem-solving skills than people who had fewer books growing up but had similar education levels, similar jobs, and even similar adult habits in connection with reading or working at numeracy-improving activities (我们能够明确的是,与那些在成长过程中拥有较少书籍,但在阅读或从事提高计算能力活动方面有着相似教育水平、相似工作,甚至相似成人习惯的人相比,在书籍周围成长的人具有更好的读写能力、计算能力和解决技术问题的能力)”可推知,参与者在不同的成长环境中长大。 根据第三段中的“If we grow up in a house, in a home where parents enjoy books, where books are given as birthday presents and valued, this is something that becomes a wealth of knowledge and gives us this lifelong driving force (驱动力) to always come close to books and read more than we would. (如果我们在一个父母喜欢读书的家庭中长大,在一个书被当作生日礼物并受到重视的家庭中长大,这就会成为知识的财富,并给予我们终生的动力,让我们总是接近书籍,比我们平时读得更多)”可知,书籍带来了一种丰富知识和渴望阅读的感觉。故选D。 【15题详解】 主旨大意题。根据全文的大意,尤其是第一段中的“As is known to us all, reading books is good for children. Now, a new study suggests that just being around books has its benefits (益处). (众所周知,读书对孩子有好处。现在,一项新的研究表明,仅仅是在书的周围就有好处)”可知,文章主要讲述了书香环境对孩子成长的好处。由此可知,C. Growing Up Around Books Benefits Children a Lot(围绕书籍成长对孩子们有很大好处)适合作本文最佳标题。 How Can I Fight Laziness? C 17. G 18. F 19. A 20. 【16题详解】 根据后文“Many people lack sleep constantly, since they stay up too late and get up too early to prepare for work. These people have little motivation once they arrive home. Laziness works hand in hand with a lack of motivation and a tendency to put off things. By adjusting your sleep schedule to provide a few more hours of meaningful rest, you can fight laziness throughout the day.(许多人经常缺乏睡眠,因为他们熬夜过晚,无法早起准备工作。这些人一旦回到家就没有什么动力了。懒惰与缺乏动力和爱拖延密切相关。通过调整你的睡眠时间表,提供几个小时重要的休息,你可以战胜一整天的懒惰)”可知,本段关于克服懒惰的方法是要获得充足的睡眠,C选项中sleep与后文中sleep相对应。故C选项“克服懒惰的一个方法是获得充足的睡眠”符合语境,故选C。 【17题详解】 根据上文“Another way to fight laziness is to change your mind from passive to active. Some people treat their lives as if they were pushed from task to task. Others take a more proactive approach, viewing each task as a challenge they must overcome alone.(另一种战胜懒惰的方法是把思想从被动转变为主动。有些人对待自己的生活就好像是被迫从一个任务推到另一个任务。另一些人则采取更积极主动的方法,将每项任务视为他们必须独自克服的挑战)”可知,本段克服懒惰的方法是变被动为主动,也就是说,要主动掌握生活,本句为本段最后一句,应承接上文说明当无法主动掌控生活时,就会变懒惰的情况。故G选项“当你觉得自己不再能掌控自己的生活时,就会变得懒惰”符合语境,故选G。 【18题详解】 根据后文“complete a few tasks and reward yourself with what you enjoy, such as a good dinner or a film.(完成一些任务,用自己喜欢的东西奖励自己,比如一顿美餐或一场电影)”可知,后文提到了用自己喜欢的东西奖励自己,可知本段说明的克服懒惰的方法是:给予自己奖励,F选项中a reward system for yourself对应后文中reward yourself。 【19题详解】 根据上文“Laziness can also be a lasting problem at home. Couples and children may all have different energy levels, but laziness can be spread if not dealt with immediately.(懒惰在家里也是一个长期存在的问题。夫妻和孩子的精力可能各不相同,但如果不立即处理,懒惰会蔓延开来)”以及后文“Be the first to collect and wash dishes after a meal. Others in the home may eventually follow your example and perform their own task. It is difficult to practice laziness when you are surrounded by motivated people.(饭后要第一个收拾碗碟。家里的其他人最终可能会以你为榜样,完成他们自己的任务。当你周围都是干劲十足的人时,很难养成懒惰的习惯)”可知,本段主要是关于如何克服家庭懒惰,上文提到懒惰蔓延,后文则提到了要树立榜样,故本句是在说明对抗家庭懒惰的方法是树立榜样。且A选项中family对应上文中at home。 【20题详解】 根据后文“Enough exercise and a balanced diet can help you to develop a healthy lifestyle, thus enabling you to have more energy and help lift your spirits.(足够的运动和均衡的饮食可以帮助你养成健康的生活方式,从而使你有更多的精力,并帮助你振作精神)”可知,本段主要说明的是通过锻炼来克服懒惰,D选项中taking exercise对应后文中Enough exercise。 I was not very close to my father.
