Have you ever heard of people making clothing with fish skin? It might sound unusual, but the Hezhe people, a small ethnic group (民族) in northeastern China, have done just that for centuries.
Why do they use fish skin? The reason is quite practical: the Hezhe people live near rivers with lots of fish but few other materials available. Through generations (数代人) of creativity and hard work, they have perfected the method of creating clothing from fish skin.
Making fish-skin clothing is not easy. It requires great patience and skills. It starts with choosing the right fish. Not all fish skin is suitable for making clothing. The thick and strong skin of salmon (大马哈鱼) makes it a great choice. After catching the fish, the Hezhe people carefully remove the meat for food and save the skin. Then they wash the skin and fix any small holes to keep the skin in good shape. After cleaning, they dry the skin in the sun. Once it’s dry, it becomes hard. To soften it again, they use a special natural material. This process can take one to two months! Slowly, the skin becomes as supple as cloth. Then the skin is ready to be made into clothing. Fish-skin clothing is light in weight, waterproof (防水的), and perfect for the cold winters and hot summers of northeastern China.
Today, the Hezhe people no longer wear fish-skin clothing, but their fish-skin artworks and crafts (手工艺品), like paintings and bags, are becoming popular with tourists around the world.
4. Why do the Hezhe people use salmon skin?
A. Salmon is easy to catch.
B. Salmon skin is colorful.
C. Salmon skin is thick and strong.
5. Which of the following shows the right order of making fish-skin clothing?
① Soften the fish skin.
② Dry the fish skin in the sun.
③ Repair holes in the fish skin.
④ Remove the meat from the fish.
A. ④→③→②→① B. ①→④→③→② C. ④→③→①→②
6. What does the underlined word “supple” probably mean?
A. Smooth. B. Colorful. C. Soft.
7. What is happening to the fish-skin clothing today?
A. It is mainly worn during traditional festivals.
B. It is more commonly seen as artworks and crafts.
C. It remains a daily necessity for all Hezhe people.
C 5. A 6. C 7. B

根据文章第三段“The thick and strong skin of salmon (大马哈鱼) makes it a great choice.”
根据文章第三段“After catching the fish, the Hezhe people carefully remove the meat for food and save the skin. Then they wash the skin and fix any small holes to keep the skin in good shape. After cleaning, they dry the skin in the sun. Once it’s dry, it becomes hard. To soften it again, they use a special natural material.”
根据文章第三段“Once it’s dry, it becomes hard. To soften it again, they use a special natural material. This process can take one to two months! Slowly, the skin becomes as supple as cloth.”
根据文章最后一段“Today, the Hezhe people no longer wear fish-skin clothing, but their fish-skin artworks and crafts (手工艺品), like paintings and bags, are becoming popular with tourists around the world.”
C
Have you ever read Dune or watched the films? On the desert planet Arrakis, people wear special suits that can collect sweat and urine (汗和尿) and turn them into clean drinking water. It may sound like magic, but some water-stressed places in the world are recycling (回收) wastewater in similar ways. Astronauts in space also use recycled water. But what about us?
We might not start by recycling wastewater for drinking, but we can recycle it for other uses. Take flushing toilets (冲马桶) as an example. Every day, a lot of clean fresh water is used to flush away human waste. This doesn’t seem like the wisest use of our fresh water, does it? Some people are looking for smarter ways to use water.
Jenfelder Au is a new neighborhood in Hamburg, Germany. It has a wastewater reuse project. It cleans and reuses dirty water in three different ways. Rainwater is collected to water the gardens.
“Gray water” from the kitchen and bathroom is used to flush toilets. “Black water” from toilets is sent to a local plant to make biogas (沼气). Thanks to the project, 30% of the water has been saved, and it also helps produce electricity for many homes.
Maybe all new neighborhoods around the world can learn from Jenfelder Au. But the big problem is with old houses. It’s hard and expensive to change their old pipes and water systems However, Dr. Upmanu Lall, an expert from the US, is hopeful. “We fix and improve our homes and cities every 10 to 15 years. We can use this chance to encourage people to try new water-saving technologies. Gradually, more people will use water wisely and more water will be saved.”
8. Why is Dune mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. To encourage people to watch the movies.
B. To teach people how to live in the desert.
C. To introduce a water-recycling technology.
9. Which of the following shows the “journey” of “black water”?
A. B. C.
10. What does Dr. Upmanu Lall think of the future of water recycling?
A. Only rich countries will be able to pay for it.
B. People still prefer fresh water over recycled water.
C. It will become more common as technology improves.
11. What is the best title for this article?
A. Creative ways to recycle wastewater
B. The importance of protecting water
C. Challenges in wastewater recycling
C 9. B 10. C 11. A

第四段“‘Black water’ from toilets is sent to a local plant to make biogas... it also helps produce electricity for many homes.”
最后一段“We fix and improve our homes and cities every 10 to 15 years. We can use this chance to encourage people to try new water-saving technologies”,这表明他认为随着技术推广,废水回收会变得更普遍。

When you were little, did you have a favorite blanket (毯子) or soft toy that you carried everywhere? These objects make you feel happy, comfortable or safe. Objects like these are known as security (安全) blankets.
Security blankets, whether blankets, quilts or toys, can provide children with a sense of security in an uncertain world. According to research, security blankets can lower children’s heart rates (心率) and stress in strange situations. As children get older, the sense of security offered by these objects may disappear. However, connections to the security blanket may last for a long time. Old security blankets often become symbols of happy memories.
In fact, many adults around the world still keep the security blankets they had as children. A recent study in Britain found that 35% of adults sleep with soft toys. These objects may change throughout one’s life. Think about your favorite T-shirt, toy, or blanket that you enjoy holding at home. Objects like these can provide a sense of comfort and security to help you relax and forget your worries.
In China, people like to call security blankets “A Bei Bei”. The term came out when an Internet user shared how her baby son named his security blanket.
