Race to the pole 必修二 Unit5 Lesson3 Where is it? Do you know anything about it? Lead in Antarctica 南极洲 A continent round the South Pole, almost entirely covered with ice up to 4 km thick. Antarctica is the driest, windiest and coldest continent in the world.  The lowest temperature ever recorded was −89.2°C. Today the only plants that grow are very small mosses and lichens.  2 If you are an explorer of Antarctic,enjoy a video and answer the questions. What difficulties do you think you may face there? What preparations do you need to make? 3 1. What difficulties do you think explorers may face there? They may face the extreme weather, such as snow, storm, the weather there would be the coldest. There is not any people living there, because the conditions are so terrible that no one can live there. 2.What preparations should people do if they would like to explore Antarctica? And why? They should bring water, food, warm clothes to keep warm, because they need to maintain(维持) their energy(能量) and strength(体力). Scott and his men had to push the sledges themselves. He had teams of dogs pulling the sledges and all his men were on skis. Because of this, he made rapid progress. Scott arrived at the Pole with four team members on 17 January, 1912, and was heartbroken. Amundsen reached the Pole on 14 December, 1911 and put a Norwegian flag there. Then he prepared for the return journey. Arrival at the destination Men were very tired and were running out of food. The weather conditions were terrible. They brought rocks back for scientific research. All members died. Amundsen and his team arrived safely back to their starting base on 25 January, 1912, ten days ahead of their planned schedule. Scott started to realise their hopeless situation: “... We are very cheerful, but what each man feels in his heart I can only guess. Putting on our shoes in the morning is getting slower and slower.” The men were getting weaker. Task 5: Line 33 The next to go was Captain Oates, who was having great difficulty walking. Scott recorded his death: “He said, ‘I am just going outside and may be some time.’... We knew that poor Oates was walking to his death, but though we tried to stop him, we knew that it was the act of a brave man and an English gentleman. We all hope to meet the end with a similar spirit, and certainly the end is not far.” He is going to die. Line 42 Scott spent some of his last hours writing. He wrote a letter full of sadness to his wife Kathleen: “I could tell you lots and lots about this journey. What stories you would have for the boy… but what a price to pay.” They lost their lives.
