Visit Amsterdam, the Netherlands
Best time to visit
July and August are popular and busy. If you want to see the tulips (郁金香), come in mid-April to early May. You’ll find better deals and quieter crowds from October to March, with the exception of New Year’s Eve. This is a unique and exciting celebration in Amsterdam, and well worth experiencing.
Amsterdam weather
August is the hottest month, with an average high of 63°F (17.22℃), and the coldest is January, with an average high of 37°F (2.78℃).
Amsterdam transportation
Amsterdam is compact, so walking or renting bikes to make use of the great bike lanes is easy. Yet public transport (taxis, subways and buses) is also excellent. Buy a chip card at a ticket machine or counter (柜台), or ask the driver for a tourist pass (there are one-to-seven-day cards starting at $8).
Know before visiting
Some attractions (especially the Van Gogh Museum and the Anne Frank House) get very busy, especially in summer, so book a ticket and share time to visit in advance. The city is generally safe, but pickpockets operate widely. Keep wallets safe on the subways and at the market.
21.What is the best time to watch the tulips?
A.July and August. B.October to March.
C.Mid-April to early May. D.New Year’s Eve.
22.Which of the following is recommended to visit popular attractions like the Van Gogh Museum and the Anne Frank House?

“The first time I came to Zhadong Village, I was struck by its natural beauty. The adobe(黏土坯) homes fit in perfectly with the green environment,” recalls Hansen Nico René, a 63-year-old retired policeman. “But when we entered the houses, we found people were poor. There was a fireplace, a table, and some chairs.”
The village Hansen visited is in a remote mountainous area in Hechi, Guangxi. Before coming to Zhadong, Hansen had settled in downtown Hechi for six years. What brought the retiree to Zhadong was a notice for volunteers to aid the poverty-alleviation program in March 2018. At the time of Hansen’s first visit, there were still some parts of the village that were not accessible by road. It was a rainy day, but dozens of people were busy in the fields working with cables, bamboo, and iron posts, so Hansen went to see what was going on and found out that they were preparing to grow passion fruit to help people out of poverty.
After the visits, Hansen suggested that the village use the land behind it to build a farm, and he also participated in the construction work himself. “It was a jungle. We brought electricity and water, and then we built a small farm. Now there are nearly 2,000 pigs and 200 cows. It is still growing,” Hansen says.
Today, this farm brings an income of over 100,000 yuan to the villagers each year. With Hansen’s assistance, the village’s officials and other volunteer workers developed distinctive industries, including cattle and sheep breeding and fruit planting. Hansen is quite satisfied with his work in the village. “Now everything has changed. The adobe homes have gone. Today everyone lives in new houses with a separate kitchen, living room, bathroom, and bedrooms. There is also electricity and Internet connection.”
Hansen returned to the city in May 2021. However, he maintains a deep attachment to Zhadong, and often goes back to the village to see his old friends and promote tourism by sharing pictures of local landscapes and cultural events on social media with his friends in Europe and beyond.
24.What impressed Hansen first when he visited Zhadong Village?
A.The adobe homes. B.The natural beauty.
C.The friendly people. D.The green lifestyle.

The eyes are more than a window to the soul—they’re also a reflection of a person’s cognitive (认知的) health. Research has been exploring how the eyes may help in diagnosing (诊断) Alzheimer’s disease before symptoms (症状) begin.
“Alzheimer’s disease begins in the brain decades before the first symptoms of memory loss,” said Dr. Richard Isaacson, an Alzheimer’s preventive neurologist at the Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases. “If doctors are able to identify the disease in its earliest stages, people could then make healthy lifestyle choices and control their risk factors, like high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes,” Isaacson said.
Then how early can we see signs of cognitive decline? To find it out, a recent study examined donated tissue from the retinas (视网膜) and brains of 86 people with different degrees of mental decline. “Our study is the first to provide in-depth analyses of the protein profiles and the molecular, cellular, and structural effects of Alzheimer’s disease in the human retina and how they correspond with changes in the brain and cognitive function,” said senior author Maya Koronyo-Hamaoui, a professor of neurosurgery and biomedical science at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.
Researchers in the study collected retinal and brain tissue samples over 14 years from 86 human donors with Alzheimer’s disease and mild cognitive damage—the largest group of retinal samples ever studied, according to the authors. Researchers then compared samples from donors with normal cognitive function to those with mild cognitive damage and those with later-stage Alzheimer’s disease.
The study, published in February in the journal Acta Neuropathologica, found significant increases in beta-amyloid, a key marker of Alzheimer’s disease, in people with both Alzheimer’s and early cognitive decline.
“These findings may eventually lead to the development of imaging techniques that allow us to diagnose Alzheimer’s disease earlier and more accurately,” Isaacson said, “and monitor its progression by looking through the eyes.”
28.What can eyes help do according to the recent study?
A.Convey people’s feelings.
B.Show people’s lifestyle choices.
C.Indicate people’s physical decline.
D.Reflect people’s cognitive function changes.
29.What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The plan for the study.
B.The process of the study.
C.The reason for the study.
D.The method of the study.
30.How was the study conducted?
A.By conducting a detailed survey about the human retina.
B.By making a comparison between samples from different donors.
C.By asking and answering questions about the changes in the brain.
D.By keeping track of participants to collect their data within a decade.
31.What do Isaacson’s words imply in the last paragraph?
A.Alzheimer’s disease can be cured by reducing risk factors.
B.Alzheimer’s disease can be spotted before symptoms start by examining the eyes.
C.Alzheimer’s disease begins years after the first symptoms of memory loss.
D.Scientists have developed imaging techniques to diagnose Alzheimer’s disease.
D
Imagine you found a wallet containing a stranger’s contact details but no cash. Would you return it to its owner? Now imagine the same wallet contained a few banknotes. Would that change your response? Does it depend on the amount of money? And how do you think other people would react?
Honesty makes the world go round. Without people trusting one another, society would fall apart. Honesty is therefore studied academically. Most work in the area takes place under controlled conditions in labs, though, often featuring well-off and well-educated Westerners as its subjects. By contrast Alain Cohn of the University of Michigan and his colleagues have taken such behavioral economics around the world, covering 40 countries, 355 cities and more than 17,000 people.
As the team reported this week in Science, Dr Cohn’s research assistants entered public buildings. They handed in a wallet to the receptionist, saying they had found it on the street outside. Each wallet contained contact details. Importantly, some wallets also included $13.45, while others not. Then, the team simply waited to see who would return the wallet.
In 38 of the 40 countries, the wallets with money were returned more often than those without (51% vs 40%). In addition, wallets containing a larger sum of money ($94.15) were even more likely (by about another 10%) to be returned than those with less.
With greater temptation (诱惑), then, comes greater honesty—at least when it comes to lost wallets. Interestingly, such honesty is not reflected in people’s expectations of others, though. When surveyed, most of 299 volunteers predicted that the more money in a wallet, the less likely it would be returned.
A certain doubt about the motives of others is probably good for survival. But the warm inner thought of “doing the right thing” is also a powerful motivation. How this altruism developed is much debated—particularly when it extends, as in Dr Cohn’s experiments, to strangers whom the altruist has no expectation of ever meeting. Be that as it may, as this study shows, such altruism is real and universal.
32.How is Alain Cohn’s research different from the previous?
A.It covered varied subjects and backgrounds.
B.More scientists participated in the research.
C.It was carried out in controlled situations.
D.It took no account of well-educated Westerners.
33.What can we learn from the research?
A.The rate of honesty varies among countries.
B.People prefer returning wallets without money.
C.The less money in a wallet, the higher rate of return.
D.Wallets with more money are more likely to be given back.
34.What does the underlined word “altruism” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Doubt about others’ motivations.
B.Concern for others’ needs.
C.The motivation for survival.
D.Understanding of people’s doubt.
35.What’s the best title for the text?
A.Money Answers All Things
B.Money Makes the Mare Go
C.Honesty Is Questioned in the Face of Money
D.Money Doesn’t Make the World Go Round
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Let’s face it: Nobody really likes doing chores(日常事务) around the house. But at a certain age, our kids are old enough to start lending a hand with the housework. 36 But what exactly are some of the benefits that young children and teenagers get from doing chores around the home?
37 For the little ones, walking across the room to pick up toys from the floor and put them into the toy box helps develop their motor skills. Sorting toys into groups of colors will also help develop their sensory skills.
Chores teach kids how to follow directions. Whether you are giving instructions to a toddler(学步的儿童) or a middle-schooler, describing what you are expecting your children to do—and then doing it, in return—will teach them how to follow directions. 38 Remember, only age-appropriate instructions can help them learn this important life skill.
Chores teach kids responsibility and respect. Do your children think that their rooms are just somehow—poof!—neatened? Or that their dirty clothes are magically returned to their wardrobe(衣橱)?Having your children clean up their own mess will help give them a sense of responsibility. Task them with assisting in making the family’s meals. 39 These will help them understand all their parents do to keep the home running smoothly and be more respectful of it.
Chores encourage teamwork. Everyone in the home has their own jobs to allow the house to function. 40 Sure, they may complain about doing chores, but they’ve come to understand that the chores they are tasked with each day or week are all a bigger part of keeping the family functioning.
A.They can benefit from doing this.
B.Chores help children learn life skills.
C.Or let them sort and fold their own laundry.
D.Chores help develop motor and sensory skills.
E.Speak to your children at a level they will understand.
F.Encouraging kids to do chores will make them well-rounded people.
G.It lessens parents’ stress levels and teaches kids to work together as a team.

The Right Decisions
Lisa looked at her watch outside of the gift store and knew that in half an hour her mother would be standing on the doorsteps of their house waiting. She had to make up her mind or go home without a proper birthday gift.
“What should I do?” Lisa asked herself. “I owe Mr. Chapman five dollars for a science fair display board tomorrow.” That caused a serious, uncomfortable problem. If Lisa bought the tiny cactus(仙人掌) for her mother’s birthday, she would have money for the display board. If she bought the more expensive cut flowers, she wouldn’t.
Upon stepping into the gift store, the beautiful flowers immediately caught her eye. Lisa knew her mother would adore the flowers, so without another thought, she grabbed them.
Mrs. Mills, the store manager, smiled at Lisa when she came to the counter to pay for the beautiful flowers. “Wow, I wonder who will be gifted those beautiful flowers, Lisa,” she asked with a smile.
“It’s for my mother’s birthday, Mrs. Mills,” Lisa replied, returning a smile. The price tag(价签) said the flowers cost $5.30, and Lisa gave Mrs. Mills a ten-dollar bill.
Upon stepping out of the store, Lisa looked down at the flowers in her left hand—the afternoon sun made them brighter in color. She was glad she had made the right decision. Then, her eyes fell on her right hand, where the change that Mrs. Mills gave to her lay. To her surprise, she saw a five-dollar bill inside. Mrs. Mills definitely had made a mistake and she had been given too much money!
Lisa was caught in a dilemma. A voice inside told her to keep the money, so she could have amazing flowers for her mother and five dollars for Mr. Chapman’s display board. But another voice told her it was dishonest to keep the extra money, and Mrs. Mills would be held responsible for the mistake.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
Lisa stood still for a few minutes and finally returned to the gift store and went inside.
“I’m sorry,Lisa. I did make a mistake, but the mistake is with the price tag,” Mrs. Mills said.

第四部分 写作
第一节
One possible version:
Be Responsible Travelers
While traveling, we often encounter uncivilized behavior such as littering, vandalism, and noise disturbance.Such actions not only spoil the environment but also damage the reputation of visitors.
It is crucial to be responsible travelers and ensure that we preserve the beauty and integrity of tourist spots for future generations. By respecting local customs and caring about nature, we contribute to sustainable tourism.
I urge that everyone should act responsibly, leaving only footprints and taking only memories.Together, let’s make traveling a respectful and rich experience.
第二节
One possible version:
Lisa stood still for a few minutes and finally returned to the gift store and went inside. Upon entering the store, Mrs. Mills greeted Lisa with her usual smile. Lisa knew she had made the right decision. How could she be dishonest with such a nice lady? “Mrs. Mills, you gave me too much change,” Lisa said, laying the flowers on the counter. “The flowers cost $5.30, and I gave you a ten-dollar bill. You gave me $5.70 change. I also need to trade these flowers for a cactus because I have to give Mr. Chapman five dollars tomorrow.” Mrs. Mills took the flowers and checked something on her computer.
“I’m sorry,Lisa. I did make a mistake, but the mistake is with the price tag,” Mrs. Mills said. She explained to Lisa that the flowers were sold at a discount—one dollar cheaper. The price tag should have been changed yesterday. Knowing that she could keep the money and the flowers, Lisa could hardly contain her excitement and gave Mrs. Mills a bear hug. Mrs. Mills handed her the flowers and watched as the girl left her store. It was wonderful to solve a child’s problem, Mrs. Mills thought.
