The 18-year-old cousins, Isaac Brain and Mitchell Torok, have taken equal first place in the engineering section of the BHP Science and Engineering Awards. The pair, who finished Year 12 last year, created a smartwatch-style device that can detect whether an elderly person has fallen and sound the alarm. The device will now be showcased on the world stage at a science and engineering fair in Arizona, the US, which brings together students from around the world who are first-place science winners. Mitchell, who went to Rosny College, Hobart, said he dreamed up the idea because he was worried about his 89-year-old great-grandmother Gwen Brook, who lives in an independent apartment next to an aged care facility in Hobart. “If she falls over and hurts herself, there's a chance that no one would be able to find her instantly,” Mitchell said. “So we decided to build a cheap and easy device that aged residents could wear.” Called “aWear”, the device can be worn as a watch. It is linked to a database that can send a real-time text message to nurses. As well as an alert button, the device also features an “accelerometer” that measures the speed of a wearer's movement to detect a fall. Isaac, who went to Launceston College, Launceston, developed the software and web development for the device. “The accelerometer measures movement—so when an increase in movement is detected it records that data and it is then analysed to determine whether a fall has occurred,” Isaac said. Isaac will study computer science at Melbourne University this year. He said a key feature of the device was that it caused an alert to staff even if the wearer did not press the alert button. Mitchell will study mechatronics at the University of NSW. He designed the watch and spent a lot of time testing it. “We have done a lot of test falls—with Mitchell falling onto pillows,” Isaac said. 1.What device did the two young cousins develop? A.A database system to monitor people's movements. B.A wearable calculator to measure the speed of movements. C.A real-time text messaging system for aged care facilities. D.A smartwatch-style device to detect falls and alert caregivers. 2.What was the primary motivation behind the cousins' invention? A.To win a national science competition. B.To create a product that could be commercialized. C.To develop a solution to assist their great-grandmother. D.To show their engineering and software development skills. 3.Which of the following words can describe the device? A.Groundbreaking and complicated. B.Economical and convenient. C.Transformative but clumsy. D.Costly but profitable. 4.What can we conclude from the cousins' success? A.Hard work pays off. B.It's never too late to learn. C.The simplest way is the best way. D.Ups and downs make one strong. Ⅱ. When my friend Ollie and I saw a moving truck pull up in front of the blue house on the corner, we hoped there would be a new kid to play with. The window in Ollie's kitchen gave us the perfect view of watching the movers while we were eating our lunch. “That looks like a couch(长沙发),” I said as the movers struggled to get it through the door. “Look at all those boxes!” said Ollie. “There won't be any room left for people in the house.” But we still didn't see any kids. “Everything is still in boxes,” Ollie pointed out. “We'd need X-ray vision to know if there are kids inside.” Just then, a man and a woman came out of the house. They greeted Abuela, Ollie's grandmother, who was outside watering her flowers. Before long, they were all talking and laughing. “I told you. No kids!” I said. Ollie pointed at a girl riding up to us on a bike and said, “Then who's that?” I clapped and Ollie jumped up. “Let's say hi,” Ollie said. “Aren't you supposed to bring a treat when you welcome people to the neighborhood?” I said. Just then, Abuela walked into the house. She said the family was very nice, and that the girl was about our age. Ollie suggested we make some cookies and Abuela gave us a cookbook. “Do we really need to follow a recipe?” asked Ollie. “Yes!” Abuela and I said loudly! Ollie is famous for getting creative with recipes and turning delicious treats into disasters. You know how some people are naturally good at baking and don't need a recipe to make something taste fantastic? Well, Ollie is not one of those people! “What a great job you two did,” Abuela said, pulling our cookies out of the oven. As soon as they were cool enough to be put in a container, Ollie and I ran out the door. We found the new girl riding around on her bike.                                                                                                                                                                Ollie and I each took a cookie and had a bite.                                                                                                                                                                                  答案与分层梯度式解析 Part 5 WRITING WORKSHOP, VIEWING WORKSHOP & READING CLUB 基础过关练 Ⅰ.1.illustrate 2.electric 3.exploded 4.accurate 5.boil Ⅱ.1.reflect on 2.rely on 3.gain access to 4.are associated with Ⅲ.1.preservation 考查名词。 故填of。 Ⅳ.1.makes it possible 2.preserve these endangered species from extinction 3.make our school life enjoyable 4.①makes us retell the texts ②are often made to retell the texts He said a key feature of the device was that it caused an alert to staff even if the wearer did not press the alert button. 根据第二段中的“The pair...created a smartwatch-style device that can detect whether an elderly person has fallen and sound the alarm.” 根据第四段中的“‘If she falls over and hurts herself, there's a chance that no one would be able to find her instantly,’Mitchell said. ‘So we decided to build a cheap and easy device that aged residents could wear.’” 根据第四段中的“So we decided to build a cheap and easy device that aged residents could wear.” 根据最后一段中的“He designed the watch and spent a lot of time testing it. ‘We have done a lot of test falls—with Mitchell falling onto pillows,’Isaac said.” 故选A。 Ⅱ. Character Ollie, I, Abuela, a girl, a man and a woman Background Para. 1 We found the new girl riding around on her bike. Para. 2 Ollie and I each took a cookie and had a bite. One possible version: We found the new girl riding around on her bike. “Welcome, neighbor!” I said. I introduced Ollie and myself to her. “Hope you and your family like chocolate chip cookies. We made these for you,” said Ollie. “That's so sweet!” the girl said, choosing a cookie and taking a bite. “I'm Gabriella.” Then she stopped chewing and made a funny face. “What did you put in the cookies except chocolate?” she asked. “Regular cookies are boring,” Ollie said. “I wanted them to taste like my grandmother's hot chocolate, so I used a little chili powder.” “Oh, brother,” I sighed. Ollie and I each took a cookie and had a bite. Ollie found he had put in too much chili powder and felt very embarrassed. However, Gabriella said no matter how strange these tasted, they were the best “welcome to the neighborhood” cookies she had ever had. The three of us laughed. After a little while, Abuela came outside to see how we were doing, and Gabriella's mom invited us all into their house for a snack. We had a good time that day.
