One day during the break, I saw a few girls playing soccer happily. I decided to give it a try and asked a girl ___6___ I could join them. “You want to play soccer?!” she laughed. “OK. Get ready for the trip of a lifetime. We’re leaving Qinghai Station. The scenery along the way is some of the wildest in all of China. Keep your eyes open as we race through this beautiful land. You might see a rare Tibetan antelope(藏羚羊) from your window. Before we begin our journey, let’s learn about this amazing railway. It’s truly one of the great engineering wonders of the 21st century. When it was completed on July 1, 2006, the Xizang Railway set nine world records, including the world’s highest railway at 5,072 metres above sea level, the world’s highest tunnel(隧道) at 4,905 metres, and the longest tunnel ever built on permafrost(冻土). As we travel higher, the air gets thinner and thinner. Soon there will only be 50 to 60 percent of the oxygen which we are used to breathing. But don’t be afraid. Each rail car has two separate oxygen systems. One system spreads oxygen throughout the train at all times. And each passenger can also get a personal oxygen mask just like those used in planes. Here are a few more things to think about as our train leaves the station. The designers solved three main challenges when building this great railway. First, the high altitude(海拔) made the task difficult because there was not enough oxygen. Second, much of the railway runs across permafrost, a type of ground that keeps changing as the weather warms and cools. Finally, the railway goes through some of the most sensitive ecology(敏感的生态环境) in China. Great care was necessary to make sure of the smallest possible influence on nature. All three challenges were met, making our trip possible. All aboard! The train to Xizang is leaving in fifteen minutes. 1. Where are the passengers? A. On a bus. B. On a train. C. On a ship. D. On a plane. 2. How does the text show the railway is amazing in Paragraph 3? A. By telling a story. B. By using a designer’s words. C. By introducing its world records. D. By comparing the present with the past. 3. How many oxygen systems are there in each rail car? A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four. 4. Which of the following increased the difficulty of building the railway? A. The changing ground. B. The polluted air. C. The dangerous animals. D. The hot weather. B Gary and Karen ran all the way to the Academy(学院). When they arrived, it was already ten minutes past five. “I’m sorry,” said a blonde(金发的) woman at the door of the exam room. “You’re late and the test has already started.” She looked at her notebook. “You must be Gary,” she said. “Everyone came on time. Why didn’t you?” “Please just give me one chance,” said Gary. “Something happened. Really. It’s not my fault.” “It’s true,” said Karen. “You have to believe him.” Karen told her the story of the shoplifter(商店扒手). “All right,” she said. “But we can’t give you any extra time. Take a seat and don’t disturb the others.” Gary turned and looked at Karen. He mouthed(不出声地说) the words “Thank you” to her. Gary looked at the test paper. His heart was beating fast. He remembered what Laura had told him. “Stay calm. Read all the questions carefully first, and then work out how much time is available for each question. Make sure you save ten minutes for checking in the end.” He had ninety minutes. He had to do a Maths paper and an English paper. Allowing ten minutes for checking, he had forty minutes for each paper. He set to work. He finished the Maths paper in twenty-five minutes. He checked his watch and started on the English paper. It wasn’t easy. He answered all the questions and checked his watch from time to time. He finished the English paper in thirty-five minutes. Then he read his Maths paper again. He found one mistake. He was glad he had checked carefully. He checked his English paper. He found two grammar mistakes and three spelling mistakes. He made the corrections. He looked through all his answers one more time. He took a deep breath and put down his pen. The room was quiet. He could only hear the sound of pages turning and pens writing. He checked his watch. He had finished fifteen minutes before the end of the test. Then he gave his test paper to the blonde woman. The phone call came next Monday. “This is Mrs Dexter calling from the Football Academy. We’ve got the results of your test...” Gary fell silent. After a while, “I’ll be there,” said Gary excitedly, “and I won’t be late!” —From Mr Football 5. In recent years, more and more people have come to realize the bad influence plastic water bottles have on the environment. However, their use is still on the increase. Americans buy nearly 100 billion bottles of water every year. Stack(堆叠) those up, and you could build a tower that reaches all the way from the Earth to the Moon—60 times! Why do we love bottled water so much? It’s easy—you just take it and go, and throw away the bottle when you’re done. And it is healthy, compared with sugary sodas and sports drinks. But there’s more to the story. The truth is, bottled water often isn’t any better than the water many people can get from a tap. In fact, more than half of all bottled water is tap water. This includes popular brands like Aquafina and Dasani, which sell tap water that has been run through a filter(过滤器). And chances are that the water from your tap has been tested more carefully than bottled water. Most cities check tap water for dangerous germs(细菌) and chemicals. The rules for bottled water are less strict. Perhaps the biggest problem with water bottles lies in the containers themselves. They create huge amounts of litter. Remember those 100 billion bottles we use every year? Less than one-third of them get recycled. The rest go into landfills(垃圾填埋场), where they can take hundreds of years to break down. Or they are left behind as litter on our streets and in our parks. Some end up in oceans, where sea animals can eat parts of them and get sick or die. But not everyone can just avoid bottled water. Around the world, more than 2 billion people only have access to water that contains harmful germs or chemicals. If they were to drink this water, they could get very sick. They could even die. They don’t drink bottled water because it’s easy. They drink it because they need it. Some bottled water has fluoride(氟化物), which protects your teeth. If your tap water doesn’t have fluoride, bottled water could be a healthy choice for you. Also, if there were no bottled water, you might drink a soda or a sports drink. Sugary drinks like these are a big part of why so many Americans are overweight. 1. How many bottles of water do Americans buy every year? ____________________________________________________________________ 2. According to the article, what kind of water do Aquafina and Dasani offer? ____________________________________________________________________ 3.
