One afternoon, I sat by a lake watching an old man fishing. He sat quietly by the water for hours, yet he never seemed 1 . “Why do you like fishing so much?” I asked. He smiled and said, “Fishing teaches me patience.”
I nodded, not fully understanding. Then he told me a story. “Years ago, I was a young man full of 2 . I hurried through life and always 3 about what I didn’t have. One day, a friend took me fishing. “Sit and watch the water,” he said. 4 I waited, I noticed the sun 5 on the lake, and a bird flew across the sky 6 . For the first time, I felt inner peace. Fishing taught me how to stop and appreciate the moment.”
“But what if you don’t catch 7 fish?” I asked. “Ah,” he said, “the secret isn’t about the fish. It’s about 8 to be present. Life is like a lake 9 sometimes is calm, sometimes full of waves. The key is to keep 10 steady even when the storm comes.”
His words made a difference 11 me. Later, I faced a difficult exam. Instead of being afraid, I remembered his advice. I told myself that I 12 stay calm and trust my preparation. So I took deep breaths and focused on each question. When I saw the results, I found I had done better than expected.
Now, whenever I feel stressed, I recall 13 afternoon by the lake. The old man wasn't just teaching me about fishing; he also taught me a lesson in life. He showed me that happiness 14 not in rushing to the end, but in enjoying the journey. Sometimes, the most valuable lessons come from the simplest moments—if only we spend the time 15 them.

It all goes back to a story about a young man who was the son of a horse trainer going from farm to farm, training horses. As a result, the boy’s high school career was continually interrupted. When he was a senior, he was asked to write a paper about what he wanted to be and do when he grew up.”

“Finally, after sitting with it for a week, the boy turned in the same paper, making no changes at all. He stated, ‘You can keep the F and I’ll keep my dream.’”
Monty then turned to the assembled group and said, “I tell you this story because you are sitting in my 4,000-square-foot house in the middle of my 200-acre horse ranch. I still have that school paper framed over the fireplace.” He added, “The 22 part of the story is that two summers ago that same school teacher brought 30 kids to camp out on my ranch for a week. When the teacher was leaving, he said, ‘Look, Monty, I can tell you this now. When I was your teacher, I was something of a dream 23 . This sandwich wasn’t made of bread! It was made of two cookies and some ice cream. First, I got ice cream and cut it into four pieces. Then I put each piece of ice cream onto a big cookie. Finally, I put another cookie on top. It was so delicious! (If you REALLY love sugar, heat some chocolate and pour it onto your sandwich!)

Well, everyone knows how to fry an egg. You just break it and put it into a hot frying pan with some oil. This egg was fried like all others. But I used one little trick. Before I put the egg in the pan, I added a large onion ring to the frying pan. Next, I put the egg into the onion ring to cook. That’s how the egg was cooked in a circle. The last thing I did was to make sure the egg looked happy!

Great news for pet owners in China! Passengers can now bring certain pets on some high - speed trains. This is a new program by China Railway Express. The move is a first for the country’s railway system.
The service began its test run on April 10. It’s being tested on ten trains along the Beijing-Shanghai High-speed Railway. It only runs between five big stations: Beijing South, Jinan West, Nanjing South, Shanghai Hongqiao and Hangzhou East. People can book tickets for their pets using the 12306 ticket system at least two days before travel.
Not all pets can ride the train. So far, only pet cats and dogs are allowed on board. And they must be in good health. Owners are required to show a health certificate (证明) for their pets. Besides, the pet must be less than 15 kilograms and no taller than 40 centimeters at the shoulder.
Pets will be put in specially designed containers. These boxes are kept in a separate area away from passengers. Train workers will watch the pets during the trip and check on them every two hours. Water may be provided if needed, but pets cannot be fed during the trip.
The service follows a “same departure, same arrival” rule. That means owners and their pets must get on the train at the same station and get off together as well. Pet owners should arrive early to finish check - in, and pets must be picked up within one hour after arrival.
Pricing of the service is based on travel distance. For example, transporting a pet on a journey under 1000 kilometers will cost 558 yuan. During the trial period, it only costs 360 yuan.
Some pet owners are happy with the new service. Many others, however, are a bit worried about the safety of their pets. They hope that in the future their pets can sit next to them on the train.

Group discussions are a regular part of our study life. Whether in a classroom during a literature class or in a study group preparing for a science project, we often find ourselves engaged (参与) in these group discussions. They are everywhere during our learning journey, yet, not everyone knows how to make the most of them.
Group discussions serve as a wonderful way for us to increase our knowledge. When we sit together to talk about a subject, we get to hear different ideas that we might not have thought of on our own. For example, during a history discussion, classmates might share unique stories about historical events, which can greatly enrich our understanding. Moreover, they help us improve our social skills. We learn how to communicate, work together, and build relationships with our classmates.
However, group discussions are not without their challenges. One common problem is that some students talk for a long time, not giving others a chance to speak. As a result, many students, especially the shy ones, may feel left out of the discussion. Another problem is that some students might not listen carefully to others. They are too busy thinking about what they want to say next, which leads to misunderstandings. Also, sometimes the group ends up talking about something completely unrelated to the topic.
To solve these problems, first, you should set clear rules at the start of the discussion. Decide how long each person can talk and make sure that everyone gets a turn. This will stop a few students from taking over the conversation and encourage more people to take part in the discussion. For example, you could set a time limit of two minutes for each person’s comment.
Second, practice active listening. When someone is speaking, look at him or her and nod to show you’re following. Taking notes can also help. By listening actively, you show respect for others, and you can also get more out of what they’re saying, which can make your own ideas better.
Third, your group can choose a “monitor”—someone who watches the time and discussion. He or she can clearly write the main topic in a place where everyone can see it. If the group starts going off topic, the monitor should be brave enough to stop the conversation gently. For example, the monitor can say, “Let’s get back to our main topic, which is...”
33.What are the benefits of group discussions according to the passage?
A.They help us become active and build relationships.
B.They help us become creative and develop team spirit.
C.They help us increase knowledge and improve social skills.
D.They help us increase competition and form learning habits.
34.Which of the following shows the correct match between the problems and their solutions?

②Some students don’t listen carefully. b. Choose a monitor.
③The group talks about unrelated things. c. Practice active listening.

C.①—a;②—b;③—c. D.①—b;②—a;③—c.
35.What is the main purpose of choosing a “monitor” in group discussions?
A.To take notes during the discussion.
B.To keep the discussion on the main topic.
C.To stop shy students from being left out.
D.To ensure everyone follows the time limit.
36.Why did the writer write this passage?
A.To show us different study methods. B.To teach us how to solve problems.
C.To tell us the importance of learning. D.To help us improve group discussion skills.

1On February 16, 2025, Futian District in Shenzhen began to use 70 AI - powered civil servants (公务员). These workers are made with DeepSeek’s R1 model. They can deal with 240 different things in 11 areas, such as documents, public services, and emergency management.
The AI system works very well. It can find and fix mistakes in work with 95% accuracy (准确率). People can only do this with 70% accuracy. And it makes the time for checking much shorter, 90% shorter. This means human workers can spend more time on creative jobs. The AI can also send requests to the right place. The accuracy rate went from 70% to 95%. This helps solve urgent (紧急的) problems, like getting healthcare, much faster. During emergencies, like typhoons, the AI can guess where the disaster will go with 98% accuracy. It can also make rescue plans 80 times faster than people. This can save lives in dangerous times.
The cost of using these AI workers is very low. Each one only uses $0.4 of electricity every month. In five years, the cost is less than three months of a person’s pay. It means the government can put more money into education and building things like roads and bridges. To make sure everything is safe, Futian made China’s first rules for government AI helpers. These rules say that people must watch over important decisions made by AI.
This new use of AI has made people much happier with the government. Public satisfaction has gone up from 78% to 96%. It shows that technology can make the government more open and easier to believe in.

Nowadays, environmental protection has become a big focus around the world. As technology develops fast, more new tech ideas are helping the environment and bringing new hope for our planet. 41
Solar energy, a clean power source, is being used a lot. In many cities, solar streetlights shine on the streets. These lights have solar panels on top. During the day, the panels catch sunlight and turn it into electricity to store. At night, the stored power lights up the way. 42 Compared to old-style streetlights, solar ones save a lot of electricity and make less carbon pollution, which is great for the environment.
Electric cars are also changing how people travel and helping the environment. Different from gas-powered cars, electric cars run on electricity and give out almost no exhaust (废气). 43 Now, many car companies are spending more on making electric cars. There are more kinds of electric cars on the market, and they can go farther on one charge.
Technology also helps a lot in waste handling. Some high-tech waste plants use smart ways to sort waste well. Things like paper, plastic, and metal that can be recycled are made into new products. 44 It saves materials and cuts down the waste in landfills.
Moreover, smart sensors watch air and water quality all the time. This helps the environment department find pollution problems quickly and do something about them. 45
A.This way, lots of things that would be thrown away can be used again.
B.Even on cloudy days or at night, the stored power can keep the streetlights working.
C.For example, if the air gets bad, they can quickly limit cars on the road or make factories cut down on pollution.
