Summer is here, and watermelons are a must-have. But how do you know if a watermelon is ripe (成熟的)? Can you tell it’s sweet just by looking? Is there a way to choose right without cutting? Don’t worry—“watermelon inspectors (检查员)” have the answers! They can choose a great watermelon in seconds, and over 95% of the ones they pick are the first class.
Xie Yunqing, who works at a market in Nanwangdian, Shandong, knows picking good watermelons is hard. “They all look similar,” he says. “You can’t tell if they’re ripe or sweet without cutting, but inspectors can do it easily!”
Wan Hongchun, a buyer from Zhejiang, has been coming here for three years to buy watermelons. “They quickly find watermelons that are both ripe and tasty,” she shares.
Ma Qi is an inspector with five years of experience. Every day, she starts working early in the morning and finishes late in the evening. She checks about 22,000 kg of watermelons daily. She uses three ways to check the watermelons: looking at them, touching them and listening to the sound when she taps (轻拍) them. Another inspector, Wu Zhilun, says that to be good at this job, you need to know a lot about how watermelons grow and also have a lot of practice.
These inspectors not only help us get delicious watermelons but also help farmers in the countryside to have better lives. It shows that traditional farming skills are still very useful in modern times. Next time you buy a watermelon, use their tips!

Passage5
(24-25七年级下·上海·月考)Ricardo Semler became boss of his father’s company in Brazil at the age of 21. The name of the company is Semco. It sold parts for ships. Semler worked like a mad man, from 7:30 am to midnight every day. One afternoon, while he was visiting a factory in New York, he fell down. The doctor said, “There’s nothing wrong with you. But if you continue like this, you’ll find a new home in our hospital.” Semler got the message. He changed the way he worked. In fact, he changed the ways his workers worked, too.
He let his workers take more responsibility so that they would be the ones worrying when things went wrong. He allowed them to set their own salaries, and he cut all the jobs he thought were unnecessary, like receptionists and secretaries.
He changed the office: instead of walls, they have plants at Semco, so bosses can’t shut themselves away from everyone else. And the workers are free to decorate their workplace as they want. As for uniforms, some people wear suits and others wear T-shirts.
Semco has flexible (弹性的) working hours: the workers decide when they need to arrive at work. Also, Semco lets its workers use the company’s machines for their own projects, and makes them take holidays for at least thirty days a year.
It sounds perfect, but does it work? The answer is in the numbers: in the last six years, Semco’s revenues (收益) have gone from $35 million to $212 million. The company has grown from 800 workers to 3,000. Why?
Semler says it’s because of “peer pressure (同辈压力)”. Peer pressure makes workers work hard for everyone else. If someone isn’t doing his job well, the other workers will not allow the situation to continue. In other words, Ricardo Semler treats his workers like adults rather than children, and expects them to act like responsible adults. And they do.
1.Why did Semler change the ways he and his workers worked? Because ________.
A.he became mad B.he had to stay in hospital
C.his father asked him to do so D.he realized the danger of overwork
2.Semler makes a lot of changes in his company EXCEPT ________.
A.the workers decide when they need to arrive at work
B.the workers have fewer holidays than before
C.the workers can decorate their workplace as they like
D.the workers can use the company’s machines to do their own projects
3.What’s the main idea of Paragraph 5?
A.Ricardo Semler’s method of running the company was successful.
B.Ricardo Semler’s idea sounded perfect but not practical (实用).
C.The company earned a lot of money.
D.The reason for Ricardo Semler’s success.
4.The underlined word “they” in the last paragraph refers to ________.
A.adults B.Semler’s workers C.flexible working hours D.Semco’s revenues

根据第一段“During the day, we are busy working or studying. Even when everyone is at home, we often do things alone. The only time we may have to talk with each other is dinner time.”
根据上文“The family enjoyed it together, talking about how our days were going and making family plans.”和下文“My mother cooks delicious and healthy meals. She doesn’t eat fast food. My dad has a garden. We can always have some fresh vegetables and fruit in summer.”
根据第三段“When I was young, I never helped prepare for dinner. But when I grew up, I often cooked for my family.”

根据第二段“Her mother did it for her before, but it’s her job now. She feels very happy to give a hand to her mother.”

5.________ is the most important thing in Semler’s company.
A.Money B.Rule C.Responsibility D.Hard work
【答案】1.D 2.B 3.A 4.B 5.C
根据“One afternoon, while he was visiting a factory in New York, he fell down ... He changed the way he worked. In fact, he changed the ways his workers worked, too.”
根据“And the workers are free to decorate their workplace as they want.”以及“Semco has flexible (弹性的) working hours: the workers decide when they need to arrive at work ... and makes them take holidays for at least thirty days a year.”
根据 “It sounds perfect, but does it work? The answer is in the numbers: in the last six years, Semco’s revenues (收益) have gone from $35 million to $212 million. The company has grown from 800 workers to 3,000.” 故选A。
根据文章最后一段“ In other words, Ricardo Semler treats his workers like adults rather than children, and expects them to act like responsible adults. And they do.”
根据“He let his workers take more responsibility so that they would be the ones worrying when things went wrong.”以及最后一段“Semler says it’s because of ‘peer pressure (同辈压力)’ ... In other words, Ricardo Semler treats his workers like adults rather than children, and expects them to act like responsible adults. And they do.”
