In 2013,Alie Ward’s life was falling apart. In quick succession, her relationship with her partner ended;her dad was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer;and she was feeling increasingly unhappy in her job.
Ward lived in Los Angeles at the time.To distract herself from her sadness, she liked to find and take pictures of her unconventional obsession (痴迷):bugs.Sometimes,if she found a beetle or a bee that she particularly liked, she’d post it to social media. Those posts attracted the attention of a woman named Lila Higgins, who worked as an entomologist at the local natural history museum. After seeing Ward’s pictures,Higgins reached out to her to see if she would want a tour of the museum’s insectary (昆虫饲养研究室).
“For most people in the middle of a really terrible year, questions like ‘Do you want to come to see 40 cockroaches (蟑螂) in a fish tank’ are not what most people would say ‘absolutely’ to,” Ward said.“But this is my jam. There was nothing I wanted more than to see some scorpions (蝎子).”
When Higgins led her through the different exhibits in the museum, for the first time in ages,Ward felt herself light up.Higgins noticed her enthusiasm and suggested Ward volunteer at the museum for a few hours every week.
Despite her doubts,Ward decided to sign up.“It gave me this sense of purpose. It helped me reconnect with my love of science and nature that I really put on the back burner to chase those careers that were not really what I like,” said Ward.
Soon,Ward quit her job and started working in science media. She now is the host of a podcast called Ologies.Ward had Higgins on the show as her first guest.“She has caused such an increasing effect in my life.It was really because of her that I was able to reconnect with that part of myself, and do something that I really love,” said Ward.

Nick Perez and his 8-year-old daughter,Lucy Moore drove eight hours from Cecil County,Md.,to Kentucky’s Cave Run Lake in the hope of catching the musky fish (梭子鱼).
After nearly 10 hours in the rain,Lucy finally caught a 40-inch musky wider than any Perez had ever seen.It was all that hard work.Perez said,“There are guys I know that are 60 years old who have never caught one.And at the time she was almost 9.”
Now,three years later,12-year-old Lucy Moore has continued to be a pioneer in a sport dominated (占据) by men. This summer,Lucy became both the first female and the youngest person to receive Maryland’s Master Angler Milestone Award.
To receive the award, she had to catch 10 different kinds of fish—all of which had to be “trophy (奖杯) size”.But Lucy is not in it for the awards. She said her favourite part about fishing is getting to explore nature with her dad.“Fish never really live in ugly places,” Lucy said.
The FishMaryland programme from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources lists more than 60 kinds of fish and the sizes they must be in order to be able to count towards receiving the award. The FishMaryland programme recognises fishers with three awards:the Angler, the Expert Angler and the Master Angler.Erik Zlokovitz, leader of the Department of Natural Resources, said,“Usually people focus on two or three kinds, and she’s got 10 that are all trophy size,so it’s doubly impressive.”
The FishMaryland award programme mainly wants to let locals know the state’s large biodiversity,as well as break away from invasive (入侵的) fish by encouraging people to catch and eat them.Zlokovitz said he was excited to see a young girl like Lucy like fishing because he believes she can help spread the joy of fishing to younger generations. She may encourage other young fishers and girls to join in the programme.

A new report from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) shows that global animal populations have dropped greatly since 1970.The report is based on information about 5,495 different species of animals around the world. The information was collected by the Zoological Society of London (ZSL),which used it to create what it calls the “Living Planet Index” (LPI).The LPI focuses on vertebrates—animals with backbones, such as birds, fish, and mammals. The LPI report shows that between 1970 and 2020,the average size of these populations dropped by 73%.
The LPI can be a little perplexing. It doesn’t show the change in the total number of animals on the planet.Instead,it shows the average change in the size of animal populations since 1970.For example,if one species dropped from 1,000 animals to 500,that’s a 50% drop.If another species dropped from 100,000 to 50,000,that’s also a 50% drop. The number of animals lost in the second population is much higher, but they would both count as a 50% drop for the LPI.But even if the numbers aren’t perfect, scientists agree that animal populations are dropping. And that’s a serious problem.
The report shows that populations have dropped in all kinds of habitats (栖息地).Freshwater habitats, such as rivers and lakes, saw the biggest drop, averaging 85%,followed by land animals at 69%.In the oceans, the drop was 56%.Geographically,Latin America experienced the greatest loss at 95%,while Africa’s animal populations fell by 76%,and Asia and the Pacific by 60%.Europe and North America had smaller drops, but they still saw a 33% drop since then.
Human activities, including habitat destruction, farming, climate change, pollution, and over-hunting,are the primary cause. The WWF calls for urgent action to protect Earth’s wildlife, recommending that 30% of the world’s land, oceans, and freshwater be protected by 2030 and that humans change how they eat, farm, and produce energy.
32.What does the LPI report show?
A.The total number of animals on Earth.
B.The habitats of different endangered animals.
C.The average change in animal population sizes.
D.The number of species that have already died out.
33.What does the underlined word “perplexing” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Simple. B.Confusing.
C.Exciting. D.Important.
34.Based on the report, which region saw the largest average drop in animal populations?
A.Europe. B.Latin America.
C.North America. D.Asia and the Pacific.
35.What recommendation does the WWF make to protect wildlife?
A.Developing new farming technologies.
B.Increasing the number of zoos worldwide.
C.Introducing new animal species to endangered areas.

It was a bright spring afternoon along the Maryland coast, and Jonathan Bauer,a doctor, and his 13-year-old daughter,Ava,were driving home with the windows down on the Route 90 bridge, which spanned the shallow waters of Assawoman Bay.Suddenly, the calm was disturbed by the scream of tires.
Not far ahead of them,a black truck was sliding from one lane to the other. To the Bauers’ horror,it crashed into a concrete barrier, jumped over the car directly ahead of them, and ended up hanging over the railing of the bridge.Bauer stopped the car in time to avoid other vehicles.
And then another scream appeared. It came from the truck, which had come to rest on its right side. The driver’s door was pushed open, and a man climbed out.He dropped to the ground and then rushed to the railing.Bauer ran up beside him.The man pointed down, saying something in Spanish. In the water was a child car seat. There was a little girl next to it,about two years old.She was frightened, floating on her back, kicking and screaming.
From around the truck, more screams from others who had seen the accident came.Things quickly went worse when the girl rolled over.Bauer waited for the truck driver to do something, but he was in shock.Maybe he was inexperienced with rescues.
Bauer was not sure about his chances of jumping from this height into such shallow water. And were there rocks that would cause cuts? But the truck driver didn’t move.Time was ticking by;taking action was a must:“Ava,call 911!” Bauer shouted, ready to remove his shoes.“And stay here where it’s safe!” Bauer added.

I like reading,so my favourite place in our city is the city library.I’d like to share with you a little about our city library. When the city library was first built in 1970,it had only two floors, but as the population in the city grew, more and more people visited the library,so two more floors were added to it 10 years later.Today the library has a collection of over 140,000 books and 100 kinds of newspapers and magazines, though not all of those can be taken out.I like visiting the third floor because that’s where all the science books and older books are located.Sometimes I also visit the second floor to read the latest magazines and newspapers.I go to the first floor almost every weekend to get novels and textbooks to take home to read. The library is open from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm Monday to Friday, but on the weekend,it closes one hour earlier.

第二节
Then he climbed onto the railing.Taking a deep breath,he let go of the railing and jumped. The cold water surrounded him,but he managed to steady himself and began swimming towards the girl.As he got closer,he could see her face more clearly. She was crying, but her eyes were wide open, looking at him in fear and hope.Bauer reached out and gently took hold of her. When they broke through the surface,Bauer could hear shouts and cheers from above.
The rescue team rushed towards Bauer to take the girl from his arms.Bauer looked down at the girl. She was still crying, but her grip on him had loosened. She looked at him with wide, grateful eyes.“It’s okay, sweetie,” Bauer said, trying to comfort her.“You’re safe now.” And as he looked into her eyes,he knew that this moment, this rescue, would stay with him forever. It was a reminder of the power of love and courage, and the importance of being there for each other in times of crisis.
