Passage9
When I think of the summer I was sixteen, many things came into my mind. We had moved just the year before, and sixteen is a time when having friends makes a big difference. I made some friends, but they weren’t sure of me yet. I didn’t know why. Maybe because I’d lived in town, and my father still worked there instead of farming, like the other fathers did. The boys I knew, even Freddy Gray and J.D., still kept a small distance between us.
We had one thing in common—that we were all afraid of Mr. Wills. Mr. Wills was a big man who had fierce (凶狠的) eyes. When he looked down at you, you just felt smaller. The idea of facing his direct and immediate anger was enough to worry every one of us.
Mr. Wills was the best farmer in the village. My father said he could drive a stick to the ground and grow a tree out of it. Above all, watermelons are what he grows best. Actually, watermelons are strange things. Some men can send for the best watermelon seeds, plant them in the best ground they own, look after them with the greatest care, and they still grow a melon no bigger than their two fists (拳头). But Mr. Wills can throw seeds on the ground, kick dirt over them, leave them be and have a crop of the prettiest, biggest melons one ever saw.
Mr. Wills always planted the little field directly behind his barn (谷仓) with watermelons. It ran from the barn to the creek (小溪), a good piece of land with just the right sandy soil for melon growing. And it seemed as though the melons eagerly (热切地) rose out of the ground for him.
But they were Mr. Wills’ melons. He didn’t have any idea of sharing them with others. He watched over his watermelons more closely than anybody else. If we boys happened to walk close to his melon patch (瓜地), Mr. Wills would be there, watching us fiercely. He would often have his gun under his arm, too.
That summer Mr. Wills grew the greatest watermelon ever seen in the country. It grew in the very middle of his patch, three times as big as any melon anybody had ever seen. Men came from miles around to look at it. Mr. Wills wouldn’t let them go into the patch. They had to stand around the edge.

1.What is TRUE about me and my friends at sixteen?
A.My friends often argued with me over farming skills.
B.We were very close and trusted each other completely.
C.We had a lot in common and were equally afraid of Mr. Wills.
D.My friends were unsure of me because of my different background.
2.Which is NOT mentioned as a reason why Mr. Wills grew the best watermelon?
A.His use of the best seeds. B.His good field with proper soil.
C.His great talent for farming. D.His careful watch over the patch.
3.What do I think of Mr. Wills?
A.Annoying and impatient. B.Smart and sincere.
C.Scary but amazing. D.Unkind but modest.
