It was a sunny Friday morning in Socastee, as 80-year-old John Farr put on his bicycle gear (装备) outside Habitat for Humanity of Horry County ReStore.
“Here we are just cranking it out,” laughed Farr, as he prepared for his 800-mile Bike 2 Build ride. “Spending the whole day outside like that is really a nice experience.” This was his 20th and the longest ride for Habitat for Humanity.
Farr traveled from his hometown to Chicago in the past, as well as other shorter rides. His wife Catherine said he even rode coast to coast, but he was accompanied by a friend. For this journey, Farr was riding alone. He said it was important to spread awareness for the organization. “I think a family that lives in a decent home has a crack at a better life,” said Farr. “I think Habitat for Humanity is a real foundation-building organization, a real contributor to the welfare of our nation.”
Farr’s 14-day trip started in Horry County on Friday morning. For his first leg, he planned about 70 miles daily. He said he hoped to average about 10 miles for each hour he was pedaling (踩踏板). “I’m really into wildlife,” said Farr. “So I’m looking for birds. I’ll stop for road kill. I’m sort of a wacky (古怪的) person, maybe.”
He said it took a few days to get settled on his bike. He said bicycling away from roads with heavy traffic could be difficult. But it was a task he was willing to take on, as he tried to inspire others. “I’m certainly not superhuman or anything. I’ve had a hip replacement. I’ve had heart surgery. I’ve had prostate cancer,” explained Farr.
Starting as a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity in his hometown of Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, he’s now president of his chapter. Farr raised more than $23, 000 last year and more than $100, 000 in his two-decade rides.
4. Why did John Farr take the 800-mile journey?
A. To encourage environmental protection. B. To recover better from a heart operation.
C. To promote the cause of Habitat for Humanity. D. To break the record in cycling for old people.
5. What does the underlined phrase “has a crack at” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Has a chance of. B. Makes little impact on.
C. Means the same as. D. Pays no attention to.
6. How long would Farr cycle every day during his first leg?
A. Eight hours. B. Seven hours. C. Six hours. D. Four hours.
7. What can we learn about Farr’s 14-day bike route?
A. It started in Socastee and ended in Chicago. B. It extended from coast to coast.
C. It connected major birds’ habitats. D. It avoided high-traffic roads.
C 5. A 6. B 7. D
根据第二段“This was his 20th and the longest ride for Habitat for Humanity. (这是他为仁人家园进行的第20次,也是最长的一次骑行)”及根据第三段“He said it was important to spread awareness for the organization. “I think a family that lives in a decent home has a crack at a better life,” said Farr. “I think Habitat for Humanity is a real foundation-building organization, a real contributor to the welfare of our nation.”(他说为这个组织提高知名度很重要。法尔说:我认为住在体面房子里的家庭有机会过上更好的生活。我认为“Habitat for Humanity”是一个真正的基础建设组织,对我们国家的福祉有真正的贡献) 可知,John Farr 进行这次 800 英里旅程的原因是推广 Habitat for Humanity的事业,故选C 项。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“I think a family that lives in a decent home has a crack at a better life (我认为,住在体面房子里的家庭,____更好的生活)” 可推知,住在体面房子里的家庭,会“有机会/有可能”过上更好的生活。“has a crack at”与“Has a chance of (有……的机会)”意思最接近。故选A。
根据第四段“For his first leg, he planned about 70 miles daily. He said he hoped to average about 10 miles for each hour he was pedaling (踩踏板) . (在第一阶段,他计划每天骑行约70英里。他说,他希望自己每小时的平均骑行速度能达到10英里)”可知,他计划每天骑行70英里,平均每小时10英里,因此每天需要骑行7小时。故选B。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段 “He said bicycling away from roads with heavy traffic could be difficult. But it was a task he was willing to take on, as he tried to inspire others.(他说避开交通繁忙的道路骑自行车可能很困难。但这是他愿意承担的任务,因为他试图激励他人)” 可知,Farr 为期 14 天的自行车路线避开了交通流量大的道路。故选D。
C
Dreams can indeed be emotional and sometimes scary. But dreams can be enjoyable, too — maybe you’ve had a dream so delightful that you were disappointed to wake up and realize it wasn’t reality.
Are the images in your dreams in vivid color? Perhaps you had a dream about playing Candy Crush and can remember the brightly colored red, purple and yellow candies falling like a cascade (瀑布) in your dream.
As a neuroscientist who studies sleep I can tell you that about 70% to 80% of people report dreaming in color, as opposed to those whose dreams are just in shades of black and white. But this estimate may be low, because scientists can’t actually see what a dreamer sees. There’s no advanced technology showing them exactly what’s happening in a dreamer’s mind. Instead, they have to rely on what dreamers remember about their dreams.
To study dreams, researchers ask people to sleep in laboratories, and they simply wake them while they’re dreaming and then ask them what they were just thinking about. It’s pretty simple science, but it works.
How do scientists know when people are dreaming? Although dreams can occur in any sleep stage, research has long shown that dreams are most likely to occur during rapid eye movement sleep, or REM sleep.
Scientists can identify REM by the electrical activity on your scalp (头皮) and your eye movements. They do this by using an electroencephalogram, which uses several small electrodes (电极) placed directly on the scalp to measure brain activity. During REM sleep, the dreamer’s eyes move back and forth repeatedly. This likely means they’re scanning — that is, looking around in their dream.
That’s when dream researchers wake up their participants. Dreams are really tricky to study because they disappear so quickly. So instead of asking participants to remember a dream — even one they were having a moment ago — we ask them what they were just “thinking”. Dreamers don’t have time to think or reflect; they just respond — before the dream is lost.
8. Why is the game Candy Crush mentioned in paragraph 2?
A. To provide an example. B. To present a method.
C. To introduce a new topic. D. To make a comparison.
9. What’s the author’s view on current dream studies?
A. They tend to overestimate the rate of colored dreams.
B. They should be conducted in a natural environment.
C. They’re in need of help from traditional methods.
D. They are largely based on dreamers’ recall.
10. What kind of role does REM sleep play in the scientists’ study of dreaming?
A A memory test. B. An emotion measure.
C. A wake-up signal. D. A dream stimulator.
11. Why do researchers ask participants what they were “thinking” instead of what they were “dreaming”?
A. Participants are easily confused by technical terms.
B. They want to get faster and more direct answers.
C. They have to give clues to get accurate answers.
D. Dreaming and thinking are more or less the same.
A 9. D 10. C 11. B
根据第二段“Are the images in your dreams in vivid color? Perhaps you had a dream about playing Candy Crush and can remember the brightly colored red, purple and yellow candies falling like a cascade (瀑布) in your dream. (你梦中的画面有着鲜艳的色彩吗?也许你做过一个关于玩《糖果传奇》的梦,还能记得梦里那些色彩鲜艳的红色、紫色和黄色糖果像瀑布一样落下)”可知,作者提出“梦境是否色彩鲜明”的问题后,随即以《糖果传奇》游戏的梦境为例,具体阐释了色彩鲜明的梦境是什么样的。故选A。
根据第三段“There’s no advanced technology showing them exactly what’s happening in a dreamer’s mind. Instead, they have to rely on what dreamers remember about their dreams. (没有先进的技术能准确地向他们展示做梦者的脑海里正在发生什么。相反,他们必须依赖做梦者对自己梦境的记忆)”可知,科学家对梦境的研究很大程度上只能依赖做梦者对梦境的回忆。故选D。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“Although dreams can occur in any sleep stage, research has long shown that dreams are most likely to occur during rapid eye movement sleep, or REM sleep. (尽管梦境可以在任何睡眠阶段出现,但长期研究表明,梦境最有可能出现在快速眼动睡眠阶段,即REM睡眠)”、第六段“Scientists can identify REM by the electrical activity on your scalp (头皮) and your eye movements. (科学家可以通过头皮上的电活动和眼球运动来识别REM睡眠)”及第七段“That’s when dream researchers wake up their participants. (这正是梦境研究人员唤醒参与者的时候)”可知,REM睡眠是梦境最可能发生的阶段,科学家通过识别REM睡眠来确定做梦的时机,进而唤醒参与者进行研究,因此REM睡眠充当了唤醒参与者的信号。故选C。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第七段“Dreams are really tricky to study because they disappear so quickly. So instead of asking participants to remember a dream — even one they were having a moment ago — we ask them what they were just “thinking”. Dreamers don’t have time to think or reflect; they just respond — before the dream is lost. (梦境研究起来确实很棘手,因为它们消失得太快了。所以,我们不会让参与者去回忆一个梦,哪怕是他们刚才做的梦,而是问他们刚才在“想”什么。做梦者没有时间思考或反思;他们只需在梦境消失前做出回应)”可知,梦境消失极快,研究人员用“thinking”代替“dreaming”提问,是为了让参与者来不及思考或反思,快速做出直接回应,避免梦境遗忘。故选B。
D
Every year, monarch butterflies travel thousands of kilometers as they migrate from Canada to Mexico in the fall, just to head back north again in the spring. This is possible thanks to the natural structure of their wings, which makes them lightweight, flexible, and excellent at flying — a unique combination the researchers wanted to copy in their robots.
Despite their small size, the natural design of monarch butterfly wings is very complex, evolving to stand extremely long journeys. One of the fundamental principles that make these wings so efficient during flight is that they don’t just create thrust (推力) by actively moving, but also by passively bending their natural shape, which allows them to ‘glide’ without spending additional energy.
To achieve this, the research team, led by Oliver Gutfleisch at TU Darmstadt, built the robotic butterfly wings by putting magnetic particles (磁性粒子) into a flexible plastic material. “The wings are made from a magnetic composite material that responds to external magnetic fields,” said Kilian Schāfer, co-author of the study. “When a magnetic field is applied, the magnetic particles cause the wings to bend, copying the movement of real butterfly wings.”
Using 3D printing, the researchers created 12 different wing designs with different sizes to test their behavior using a mix of experimental tests and computer simulations. Some of the designs also recreated vein (翅脉) patterns in their design that copied those found in monarch butterfly wings to test if these structures could improve their performance. What they found was that larger wings — about 28 mm long — with vein patterns were less rigid and easier to bend, making them better at adapting their shape during flight.
In their tests, the scientists also found that butterflies that were 3D-printed using higher energy laser (激光) settings were thinner and better at bending. However, they were also more delicate and easily damaged. “The biggest challenge was creating thin, flexible structures with vein patterns that were still functional while being less than a millimeter thick,” said Schāfer. “Ensuring that these features were preserved required fine-tuning 3Dprinting process, particularly the laser energy settings, to achieve the desired mechanical properties.”
12. How did the researchers make the robotic wings fly?
A. By applying external magnetic fields. B. By using the restorative force of the plastic.
C. By filling them with air pressure. D. By attaching tiny mechanical motors.
13. What did the scientists find about the 3D-printed robotic wings?
A. All wing designs showed identical flight behavior.
B. Smaller wings kept robots’ energy requirement low.
C. Larger wings with vein patterns performed the best.
D. The vein patterns made wings rigid and worse for flight.
14. What is the message implied in the last paragraph?
A. 3D printing helped produce stronger robotic butterflies.
B. Adjusting laser energy could make ideal robotic butterflies.
C. Magnetic material made flying robots unable to function well.
D. Higher energy settings ensured wings were more adaptable.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Monarch Butterfly Migration Is Simply Magical
B. Butterflies Lead to Artificial Colors for 3D Printing
C. Butterflies’ Movements Reveal Earth’s Magnetic Field
D. Monarch Butterflies Have Inspired the Robotic Wings
A 13. C 14. B 15. D
根据第三段中“When a magnetic field is applied, the magnetic particles cause the wings to bend, copying the movement of real butterfly wings. (当施加磁场时,磁性粒子会使翅膀发生弯曲,从而模仿出真实蝴蝶翅膀的运动方式。)”可知,研究人员通过施加外部磁场使机器人翅膀飞行。故选A项。
根据第四段中“What they found was that larger wings — about 28 mm long — with vein patterns were less rigid and easier to bend, making them better at adapting their shape during flight. (他们发现,带有翅脉图案、长约28毫米的较大翅膀,刚性较小,更容易弯曲,从而使其在飞行过程中能够更好地调整自身的形状。)”可知,科学家发现,带有翅脉图案的较大翅膀表现最佳。故选C项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Ensuring that these features were preserved required fine-tuning 3Dprinting process, particularly the laser energy settings, to achieve the desired mechanical properties. (要确保这些特性得以保留,就需要对3D打印过程进行精细调整,尤其是要调整激光能量的设置,以达到所需的机械性能。)”可推知,调整激光能量可以制造出理想的机器人蝴蝶。故选B项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中“This is possible thanks to the natural structure of their wings, which makes them lightweight, flexible, and excellent at flying — a unique combination the researchers wanted to copy in their robots.

My name is Jade. I am 15 years old and live in Los Angeles. I’m just an average girl who loves adventures and hanging out with my friends. I live quite close to my school. So in the morning, I meet up with my friends and we walk to school together. My three best friends are Ali, Kaylee and Hannah.
Ali loves dancing. She is very clever and enjoys spending time outside with her parents. Kaylee is very musical and normally spends most of her time playing the guitar. Hannah is really sporty and loves playing basketball and going on runs!
On a particular Wednesday morning, when we arrived at school, we were immediately called to an assembly (集会) in the school hall. Everyone was curious as to why we were all called to the assembly. Our principal announced there was a major water leak in the school and that for health and safety, the school would have to be closed for the rest of the week. Everyone screamed with joy!
Immediately, Ali, Kaylee, Hannah and I started planning on what we would do with this unexpected holiday. As we all loved the outdoors and our parents had a lot of camping gear already, we decided that we went camping for a couple of nights.
The plan was perfect. By evening, after a rapid exchange of phone calls, all our parents agreed. Kaylee’s dad even suggested a beautiful campsite in the Angeles National Forest that he knew from his own teenage adventures. “It’s called Pinecrest Meadow (草地),” he said. We spent the night packing and borrowing gear, bursting with excitement.
We set out the next morning with our map. The two-mile hike to the meadow was filled with laughter and silly songs. But when we finally arrived at the clearing, our smiles disappeared. Pinecrest Meadow was...gone. Or rather, it was a construction site. “Temporary Ecological Restoration Area — NO ENTRY,” read a large sign.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
For a moment, we just stood there, feeling lost.

Just as we were about to give up, the trees suddenly cleared.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
For a moment, we just stood there, feeling lost. The sight of bulldozers and concrete blocks where our dream meadow should have been was heartbreaking. Hannah, usually so energetic, kicked a pebble in frustration. “What do we do now?” she muttered, her voice echoing the disappointment we all felt. Ali suggested we check the map again, hoping there might be another spot nearby that we had missed. As we unfolded the map, Kaylee pointed out a small trail leading deeper into the forest, one we hadn’t noticed before.
Just as we were about to give up, the trees suddenly cleared. Before us lay a hidden valley, untouched and serene, with a sparkling stream winding through it. “This must be it!” Ali exclaimed, her eyes shining with excitement. We quickly set up camp, laughing and chatting as we worked together. As the sun set, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, we sat around the campfire, roasting marshmallows and sharing stories. It turned out that the unexpected detour had led us to a place even more magical than Pinecrest Meadow, a reminder that sometimes, the best adventures come from the unexpected.

As a neuroscientist who studies sleep, I can tell you that about 70% to 80% of people report dreaming in color, as opposed to those whose dreams are just in shades of black and white.
D They are largely based on dreamers’ recall.
10. What kind of role does REM sleep play in the scientists’ study of dreaming?
A. A memory test. B. An emotion measure.
C. A wake-up signal. D. A dream stimulator.
11. Why do researchers ask participants what they were “thinking” instead of what they were “dreaming”?

C Magnetic material made flying robots unable to function well.
D. Higher energy settings ensured wings were more adaptable.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Monarch Butterfly Migration Is Simply Magical
B. Butterflies Lead to Artificial Colors for 3D Printing
C. Butterflies’ Movements Reveal Earth’s Magnetic Field
D. Monarch Butterflies Have Inspired the Robotic Wings

Did you know that climbing trees is one of the most natural and fascinating skills for giant pandas? From a young age, these adorable pandas start learning the art of tree climbing. ___16___ Typically, panda cubs (幼崽) begin learning how to climb at about 4 to 5 months old, and by the time they’re around 6 months, they’re already skilled climbers, able to climb tree trunks with great ease.
___17___ When a panda cub is left alone while its mother searches for bamboo nearby, it faces the threat of predators. But no worries! The cubs can quickly climb up a tree to escape danger, as climbing provides a safe refuge high off the ground. What’s more, trees are the perfect spot to take in some sunshine. ___18___
Giant pandas’ liking for climbing trees is a natural behavior closely related to their body structure and living environment. When climbing trees, pandas have a unique technique. They wrap their front paws (爪) tightly around the tree trunk or branches, and use their powerful hind feet to push themselves upwards. ___19___ This allows them to climb with stability and speed. These little performers are truly impressive in their agility (灵活性)!
As they grow older, though, you’ll notice that they climb less and less. That’s because grown-up pandas are all about conserving energy — after all, they’re always feeding on bamboo and need to save their strength for their next meal! ___20___ And you’ll more often find them moving around, enjoying the peace and quiet of their habitat.
A. Tree-climbing is essential for survival, especially for wild pandas.
B. It takes a certain amount of strength for them to climb trees.
C. So, seeing an adult panda climbing trees is a rare treat.
D. Pandas mainly survive on bamboo and plants.
E. The motion is both beautiful and smooth.
F. It helps pandas grow strong and healthy.
G. It’s truly an impressive sight!
