1.—Can you speak English, David?
—Yes, but only ________.
A.a little B.little C.a few D.few
【答案】A
【知识点】代词辨析、a few/few/a little/little、a little+n.
故选A。
2.Being ________ , the novel written by a famous teacher sells ________.
A.very worth of being read; good B.well worth reading; good
C.very worth reading; well D.well worth reading; well
【答案】D
【知识点】副词修饰动词、形容词短语、well(better best)
be well worth doing sth.
3.He will reply to Mike as soon as his reports on the coming World Cup ________.
A.finish B.is finished C.are finished D.is finishing
4.Jeffrey ________ the book for ten days. Please remind him that he needs to return it to the library tomorrow.
A.has borrowed B.had borrowed C.has kept D.had kept
【答案】C
【知识点】含since/for的现在完成时
5.If he ________ hard, he might pass the difficult exam.
A.will study B.studies C.study D.is studying
6.I never doubt ________ the song My Motherland and I is well worth ________.
A.whether; listening B.if; listening to
C.that; listening to D.that; listening
【答案】C
【知识点】that引导宾语从句、动名词作宾语、listen to、be worth doing、that
根据“I never doubt...the song My Motherland and I is well worth...”可知,第一空,在否定句“never doubt”中,宾语从句引导词应用that;第二空,be worth doing是固定搭配,意为“值得做”;但listen是不及物动词,接宾语“the song”时需加介词to,即“listen to the song”,此处需用listening to。故选C。
7.He goes to school every day ________ weekends.
A.on B.beside C.besides D.except
on在……
8.30, 000 dollars ________ a great deal of money, but it is ________ than we need.
A.are; a bit more B.are; much more
C.is; a little D.is; far less
【答案】D
【知识点】时间/距离/金钱等作主语、两者相比较(含than)、a few/few/a little/little、little(adj. 小的)、a little+n.
a little一点;less较少的,是little的比较级。“but”表示转折关系,后半句应表达“比我们需要的少”,且结合“than”可知,空二用比较级less,far可以修饰比较级,表示“远远不够”。故选D。
9.This book is ________ that one, so he reads it ________ as before.
A.as difficult as; as carefully B.as more difficult as; more careful
C.as difficult as; as careful D.more difficult as; more carefully
【答案】A
【知识点】as+副词原级+as、as+形容词原级+as、副词修饰动词、形容词作表语、difficult、carefully、careful
故选A。
10.—When is the Spring Festival?
—It’s usually _________ January or February.
A.in B.on C.at D.of
【答案】A
【知识点】介词辨析、时间介词、on、of、in、at
故选A。
11.Li Tao is clever enough to help his elder sister’s lessons ______ he’s a schoolboy now.
A.although B.after C.while D.since
【答案】A
although尽管;after在……之后;while当……时;since自从。根据“Li Tao is clever enough to help his elder sister’s lessons ...he’s a schoolboy now.” 故选A。
12.Tom thought his father is a normal worker in that factory. ________ his surprise, his father is really ________ control of the factory.
A.In; in B.To; in C.In; on D.To; with

In在……里;To朝;on在…… 第一空,根据空后“his surprise”可知,此处考查to one’s surprise“令某人惊讶的是”,介词短语,应填To;第二空,根据“is really…control of the factory”可知,此处考查in control of“掌控”,介词短语,应填in。
In all the world’s culture, people sing, play instruments, and celebrate with music. It plays such an important role in our lives that people 13 much time on its study. Experts are finding that because of the 14 our brains deal with music, learning to play an instrument or just listening to music can probably have a number of benefits.
Music education has 15 a lot of attention. Learning to play an instrument can help children improve maths, science, and language skills. One study in Canada followed children’s IQ scores for nine months, 16 that children who studied music had the biggest test score improvements. The secret may lie in the way reading music and playing notes uses several parts of the brain, making it an ability to learn school subjects.
Music is also used for 17 purposes, such as the treatment of diseases which influence memory. The secret lies in the way the brain deals with music. That’s why an old song can remind you of something that happened years ago. For patients suffering from diseases, like Alzheimer’s, listening to music can help wake up 18 memories by building up musical pathways to memories.
Studies of the music and brain connection often centre on classical music, since it activates (激活) both the left and right sides of our brain 19 . One study observed people’s brain activity as they listened to music by musician William Boyce. It found that the brain activity was the highest during the short breaks between the movements of a piece. During each break, the person’s brain expected what would come next while organizing what he or she had just heard. This process is similar to the way our brain organizes 20 , and it may explain why classical music can help improve memory.

An old man arrived in New York by plane. He came a long way—from eighty miles outside White Horse, Canada. He left the desolate* place for a good reason: to collect his prize. Several days earlier, he had received a colorful document which wrote:
Mr. Peter Finch
Rural Delivery, 33Y
White Horse, Canada
You, Mr. Finch, have won $1,000,000 US dollars
from The American Magazine Company.
A more skeptical* person would have read the small print, but Mr. Finch wasn’t a skeptic. Junk* mail wasn’t junk for him. Since he had no relatives or friends, junk mail was as close to a warm greeting.
Before his journey, Mr. Finch had shown his prize document to the villagers. Everyone was amazed.
He took a taxi from the airport to The American Magazine Company and was led to the receptionist, Betsy Anderson.
“I won the big prize,” Mr. Finch said proudly.
Betsy greeted him. Since they’d already identified all the real winners, obviously Mr. Finch was a loser. But she pretended to carefully check the document.
“I’m afraid you didn’t win, Mr. Finch. I’ve checked the numbers,” Betsy said, “I’m very sorry.”
“But it says that I’ve won,” Mr. Finch replied.
“It’s in the small print. It says that you may have been a winner,” Betsy said.
Mr. Finch didn’t believe it and refused to leave. Betsy had to call the Chairman to come. Mr. Finch told him about how he knew he must have won, and how he had read the magazine for over 50 years. It had helped keep him alive during the cold winters. He told of a thousand uses of the magazine. The American Magazine just couldn’t cheat him, he knew that.
After hours of discussion, the Chairman said they would be happy to pay his air ticket. Indeed, he thought it would be a good idea to do a story on Mr. Finch’s dependence on The American Magazine and would even pay him royalties*.
When Mr. Finch returned home with a photographer and a writer, he became famous. The villagers treated him like a celebrity*. When the story was published, they even bought one hundred magazine copies. Of course Mr. Finch never showed any signs of great wealth. Still, he seemed much happier for having visited New York. He also liked to describe to the villagers the huge building of the famous magazine.
When Mr. Finch, the White Horse Winner, died, he’d always be remembered and his experience filled many dark winters for the people of the desolate area of White Horse.
24.After Mr. Finch received the document, he ________.
A.felt very pleased about it B.kept it secret from other people
C.thought it was junk mail D.read all the words in it carefully
25.Why was Mr. Finch refused to get the prize?
A.His document was not true. B.There were no real winners at all.
C.He didn’t get the winning number. D.Someone wanted to take away the prize.
26.What was the attitude of the magazine company towards Mr. Finch?
A.They couldn’t wait to ask Mr. Finch to leave the company.
B.They were willing to make Mr. Finch famous in White Horse.
C.They’d like to pay him and publish his story with the magazine.
D.They were moved by Mr. Finch and admitted him to be the winner.

Have you seen new plants starting to grow? Have you noticed that the days are getting longer, with more daylight to enjoy? These are signs of spring, promising the return of light, colour and warm days. Spring tells us that no matter how dark or cold things might be, better days are on the way.
What is hope? “Hope is the knowledge that things can get better,” says the writer Russell. When she was writing her latest book, How to be Hopeful, Russell spoke to people who had difficult moments, such as firefighters (消防员). “The firefighter said, ‘If we don’t fight it, there’s no chance of enjoying a new day.’” explains Russell.
However, hope is also about taking action. Russell says, “If you look at history, from winning the Second World War to people travelling thousands of miles away to build a new home, there is a long history of taking actions with hope.”
Why is hope good for you? Scientists say that having hope in difficult moments can help you worry less, feel calmer and improve your feelings. Research also shows that hope can help reduce pain.
What’s practical hope? Experiencing disappointment and feeling worried or sad are part of life. If it’s possible to see hope in these moments, you should; if it’s not, don’t worry.
We all have our eye on the prize. That one big goal drives you to get up every day. For some, it’s a number, such as scores or pay rise, etc. For others, it’s a qualitative goal like being happy and satisfied every day. The thing about having the final goal in mind is that you have to make stops along the way, whether you like it or not. And the smaller prize is as important as the final prize because you have to pass it along the way.
Celebrating the small victories gives you a sense of achievement. For getting to the end goal, you need to set milestones (阶段性目标) for yourself. So you can both check your progress and celebrate that you are one step closer to your final goal.
The path to your success will shape who you are. How you deal with problems and move forward influences how you see yourself and how others see you. Also, once you are close to your final goal, the path you took is your personal history. Better to mark it with a series of celebrations than a boring storyline.
Breaking the final goal into smaller milestones makes the journey seem more manageable. If you task yourself with a marathon overnight, it seems like a challenging goal—plus, how do you get there? However, saying you want to start from 3km is a little more manageable. That way, if the first milestone isn’t met, then you can adjust (调整) your way for the second quarter.
If it’s so important to celebrate the small victories, then how do you get there? You should start out with your final goal in mind and work backwards to know what milestones you want to hit and when. Here are a few steps when setting your milestones. The first step is to list them clearly. If your milestones are unclear, how will you know when you have reached them? Besides, set quantitative (定量的) goals and stick to them. Quantitative is much easier to follow. And remember to record your progress. If a milestone isn’t met, find out why and adjust your way.
So what are you waiting for? It’s time to celebrate!
34.Why is the smaller prize as important as the final prize?
35.What makes the journey to the final goal seem more manageable?
36.What is the first step when setting milestones?
37.Would you like to celebrate small wins? Why or why not? (Please give two reasons.)
34.Because you have to pass it along the way.
35.Breaking the final goal into smaller milestones.
36.To list them clearly.
37.Yes, I would. Because celebrating small wins gives me a sense of achievement and makes the long journey more enjoyable and manageable.
34.根据文章第一段最后一句“And the smaller prize is as important as the final prize because you have to pass it along the way.” Because you have to pass it along the way.
35.根据文章第四段第一句“Breaking the final goal into smaller milestones makes the journey seem more manageable.” Breaking the final goal into smaller milestones.
36.根据文章第五段“The first step is to list them clearly.” To list them clearly.
Yes, I would. Because celebrating small wins gives me a sense of achievement and makes the long journey more enjoyable and manageable.

When talking about whether teenagers should make their own decisions, people have different ideas.
Some think it helps us develop responsibility and learn from mistakes, while others believe we are too young and need adults’ help. In my opinion, we should make our own decisions with adults’ proper guidance. Small choices like daily plans can be decided by ourselves, which builds our independence. For big decisions, we can turn to adults for advice.
This way, we can grow into more responsible and capable people.

The Power of Teamwork
Teamwork is very important. When I see the word “teamwork”, I can’t help thinking of my basketball team.
Last term, our school held a basketball game. Because of my carelessness, we lost that game. But my team members didn’t say any hard words to me. They offered to help me practice “throwing and catching” after school. With their help, I improved a lot. Two months later, we won the championship.
From this experience, I learned that one tree can’t make a forest. With good teamwork, nothing is impossible.

Dr Williamson calls this “practical hope”. “Life is a mess,” says Williamson. “We don’t need to always make others think you are fine, but we can realize how we feel, whether that’s sadness or anger, and pay attention to the opposite. You can’t change the fact that your brother or sister is bad to you, but you can do something kindly and friendly instead of making things worse. Even in the most terrible situations we can decide what we do and say to each other.”
